Lake golf balls are often viewed as a far inferior product when compared to brand-new golf balls, with many amateur golfers turning their noses up at them. However, I've used them for over 10 years and strongly believe that many amateur golfers could save themselves a huge amount of money whilst noticing no real drop in performance by using them.
In this video, I tell you everything you need to know about recycled golf balls, including what they are, how they're graded, why they shouldn't be confused with refurbished golf balls, discuss their pros and cons, explain why I use them and you should too, and explain where I buy my balls.
If after watching this video you'd like to order some premium recycled/lake golf balls for yourself, you can save an EXTRA 10% using the code 'ANDYSGOLFBLOG' when buying from the UK's number 1 lake ball reseller, MailOrderGolf: mailordergolf.com/?ref=andysg...

Good thought provoking video Andy. I’ll get some and compare on trackman for my next lesson next week and I’ll post up my findings. 👍

Thanks Russell. That would be interesting to hear the results of. Of course, it completely depends on many factors which aren't guaranteed with lake balls but as long as you're using a decent mint quality one and not refurbished then I'd be really surprised to see wild numbers. In any case, I stand by my argument that the majority of amateurs really wouldn't notice a difference worth the £1+ per ball.

Quick update. I bought some pro v1x lake balls in mint condition. Hit 10 drives 10 7 irons and 10 wedges on trackman and did the same with a 1 round old pro v1x from my bag. Absolute no difference in numbers. I’ll be lake balling from now on👍

Absolutely agree, Jack. To be honest, even when you’re no longer a beginner, I still think they’re a great option, especially if cost is a concern.

I love lake golf balls. I am a 12 handicap and cannot tell the difference between a brand new ProV1 and a lake ProV1. But I always get the higher quality lake balls.

Yeah, spot on. As long as you're buying the best grade I honestly don't see the problem in using them and, like yourself, can't really see any real difference!

I disagree.. depending how long they’ve been in the water they will get water soaked and fly different and lose distance.. been tested already

Yes, but this completely depends how long. I read a full scientific study recently (more legitimate than any other testing I've seen or read) that showed minuscule performance differences, if any, between a brand new ball and a ball which had been submerged for 5 months. Also, the video is mainly about amateur golfers, many of whom don't swing properly, don't square the face at impact, and really don't get the benefits of a new golf ball anyway. Often, of course in my opinion, the £1-2 saving per ball when buying lake golf balls would be better invested in lessons than new golf balls. However, as also mentioned in the video, it's obviously the golfer's choice and if people have the cash to buy new and would like to, that's totally cool. I just think too many people have a bad view of them without a) having ever played with lake balls themselves and b) don't have the ability to actually notice any difference whatsoever between these balls.

@@AndysGolfBlog I would buy this argument if you are choosing brand new Pro V1s over lessons. Then yes, you’d probably benefit more from lessons than snap hooking or slicing brand new Pro V1s into the pond over and over. However, while many of the lake balls will perform at an adequate level, many have also shown to have lost a significant amount of distance. High hcpers definitely don’t need an extra 20 yards of variability at any given moment depending on the ball they pick out of the bag. Personally, I think a high hcper would be better off buying a cheaper brand new ball that is tailored to help them with their weakest part of the game with some consistency. Now, if you just don’t care about getting better at golf and breaking 100 or 90 isn’t something you worry about, then sure, lake balls are probably the route for you. I buy refurbished balls by the bucket for my wife. Personally, I prefer pro v1s. If the conditions are bad, I’ll switch to a trufeel or velocity. They cost considerably less than the pro v1s and have bright colors that help you find those wayward balls when the wind gets too strong or that rough gets a bit thick. But at the end of the day, I can trust the distance I’m going to get on a well struck ball on any of those three.

Yeah, very valid points and of course, buying new balls will always be better than buying lake golf balls if you’re happy to spend the cash. Coincidently, I’ve just finished playing 9 holes and shot +1 with two birdies on my card…using a lake ball. Hit some cracking shots out there, chipped well around the green and did so using a lake golf ball. Still not convinced I’d have scored any better using a brand new pro v1 in all honesty. However, of course, I’m always happy to listen to other people’s opinion and do agree that perhaps buying new cheaper balls would be a better alternative for many amateur golfers, but I still think the lure of a nice shiny new pro v1 is still too much for many golfers, even if they’re not really going to see all of its benefits. Also, regarding any testing which shows significant reduction in performance from a lake ball (and not a refurbished ball), I’ve honestly yet to see any proper studies or tests that show this. In fact, I recently read a university-led study which showed next to no performance drop from a lake ball that had been submerged for 5 months!

haha good man, Dave. We're all the same really. As long as you buy good balls, that's all that matters. What's your preference in terms of make/model, and where do you normally buy from? Hope you enjoyed this video!

The faster you swing the more you will notice the difference between new balls and lake balls. You will lose distance and accuracy with the driver as the ball speed and spin rate will drop due to the aging of the elastic core material. I don't think water actually has much to do with it. Sunlight and heat is way worse. And even when you are leaving your brand new balls in the box for 10 years you will lose distance. I think lake balls are fine when you're playing a casual round. In a tournament I would always use new ones though.
@AndysGolfBlog
@AndysGolfBlog Ай бұрын
Yeah, very fair point. I'll stick to using lake balls for comps as I have done for numerous years. I still don't think as a 7HC I'm going to see a big enough difference in performance to offset the 3x price of a new Pro V1 which is going to become worn or lost pretty quickly. However, if money was no object then new balls would be my preference too!
@lgeiger
@lgeiger Ай бұрын
@@AndysGolfBlog I agree. I think it's just a mental thing for me, rather than an actual performance reason. I would also never buy new Pro V1s. I own a small collection that I found on the courses I played, but I never bought one in my life. The all feel different though, because some are probably many years old. I should probably check out some high grade lakeballs.

Being a beginning golfer I exclusively use balls I find at a course, from garage sales or relatives/friends/neighbors, and even balls mixed in at the driving range. You’d be surprised how many people hit normal balls at a driving range, which then get mixed in with range balls

I almost exclusively use golf balls I find at a local course. I have seen little difference between new balls and the ones I find in the pond, creek, or woods/ heavy rough. Every once in a while I find a ball that underperforms but I would say 95% are just as good as new.

Love to hear it, Thomas. I honestly think people get too hung up on old balls they find either in water, woods or buy not being good enough to play with but it's just not true. I still remember a good friend of mine who I used to golf with just picking absolutely any ball out of his bag and playing a solid round with it most weeks (E to +5 at worst). Honestly didn't matter what type of ball it was or what condition it was in - he would work his magic and make it work. Glad we agree on this one!
@Vermonstered

One of those, with any mixed bag, is that feel or performance difference between whatever you find. Eg say a senior ball (very squishy compressible ball), a rock flite, a distance ball or say any one of the premium balls. You don't always know what to expect as there's simply so many golf balls out there. I'd at least play one model of golf ball consistently

Yeah, that's fair enough Gary and probably a good idea. I very much used to do the same but now just use the lake balls unless I get given new balls...but each to their own. I don't really tend to play medals right now due to being too busy, so sadly don't have that problem! haha

Yeah, that's totally fair enough. I've used them for many, many years and I've always been happy with them but very much each to their own. I actually tested out a Vice PRO last week on our little course. Shot -1 for the 9 holes (par 27) - that was maybe down to the ball! Usually I play a PRO V1x but I actually quite liked the Vice PRO.

I very rarely play a new out the box ProV and, like you, only really buy them with pro shop credit I might not otherwise use. I generally use decent balls I find or ones I’ve bought from guys who go looking for them and sell a dozen ProV’s for £10-£20. Feels like much better value for money than pegging up a brand new ball every round! If I find Pro V1’s, I’ll keep excellent ones for medals, decent ones for bounce games and put poor ones into my short game practice bag for chipping & bunker practice. If I find other brands I’ll either give them to juniors or someone who will use them or put them in the practice area bucket. I play off +1 so it’s not only higher handicap players that don’t notice performance issues with used balls 🤣 I notice that you’re over in Dunfermline by the way. I play at Royal Musselburgh. If you ever fancy a knock round there, give me a shout. Happy to film your shots if you want a vlog for your channel 👍

Love this comment, Iain! Sums up my thoughts exactly and is why I created this video - in the hope that people will maybe give lake balls or balls they find a go. I think too many people have been misinformed about their performance deficiencies or just think they’ll notice more of a difference they will. Interesting to hear your thoughts as a better than scratch golfer. The way I see it is if you’re not squaring the clubface at impact and don’t have a proper impact position then you’re not going to notice performance issues anyway, especially if your swing isn’t consistent which is the case for me and many amateurs. Coincidentally, I’m actually about to play RM for the first time this afternoon with my work and looking forward to it! Will let you know how it goes. Thanks for the kind offer of a game - would definitely be up for that. Also, more than welcome for a game over in Dunfermline anytime too. Although, being off +1 vs a 7, I’m not sure how much of game it’ll be! Cheers

@@AndysGolfBlog It's a small world isn't it!! What's the chances!! I was actually down at the course earlier and played a couple of holes but it was very slow so I decided to get back up the road to do some more work. Although the weather is decent, you've actually been very unlucky with the greens today I'm afraid. They're normally very good (and were on Saturday) but I was speaking with the greenkeeper and he's just put a fertiliser feed down on them today. There's also some patchy sections of disease that have popped up after all that rain on Sunday. It just needs a spray to get rid of it apparently. Anyway, I'll drop you an email and we can get a game sorted at either course some time. Cheers

Very much enjoyed the round at RM yesterday, Iain. A few tricky holes as the round progressed and made a couple of little mistakes here and there but finished 79 (+9) which wasn't too bad for my first round there off the whites. Greens were still okay despite the fertiliser/feed. A little long and slowish but understandable and at least consistent in terms of speed across the board. Overall, a good experience and would definitely be up for playing it again!

Glad you enjoyed the course and 79 a decent knock 👍 Shame about the greens. You really got unlucky with the timing there. They’re normally excellent surfaces to putt on. Give them a week or two to get them in decent shape again and I’ll get in touch to arrange a game 👍
