Also, I’m confused by Koreys logic. He claims the film is not actually scaring people, they are just afraid of the images. That’s like saying a movie isn’t funny, you’re just laughing at jokes.

I think I understand what he means. Certain type of imagery would disturb most people. But Korey implies that most of these images have little to do with movie's plot, story, and development. They just sort of isolated creepy images in the corner of the shot. You could have a happy, fluffy movie, but if you throw some horrible images out of nowhere, people would be creep out, yet the movie itself still would not be scary as a whole. The same goes for comedies. Good comedies are not just a few funny jokes here and there. Comedies should have funny premise, funny characters, funny situations, etc.

This movie wasn’t a standard horror film with jump scares and monsters. But to me, it was better than that. The film examines how grief clouds judgment and renders us susceptible to manipulation by those who would abuse it for there gain. But then again horror is subjected and this was an art house film. I personally loved it. People today have the attention span of a goldfish.

I don't think I have ever disagree with you guys more. Still an incredibly enjoyable review because of your personalities, but as a horror buff, this is one of my favorite horror movies of the past several years. Also, as someone who has lived in a home with a grieving mother and father after my sister passed, it was refreshing to watch a movie to capture grief in such an uncompromisingly honest way. Also, it was terrifying. I absolutely loved this film.

I just love Toni Collette and (United States of Tara, in her shoes, 6th sense...) glad she's finally gonna get some major recognition. The part with her inconsolably crying was really hard for me to watch. Grief is a terrible thing. Part of me thinks a lot of the second and third act of the movie is her going insane with grief. Have you happened to see the VVitch or Killing of a Sacred Deer yet?

@@darkdemonqueen The VVitch is really good, except for the final-final scene. I'd like to watch Killing of a Sacred Deer, but I haven't heard much about it since the trailer. And I agree. The grieving segment in this movie is raw. From the incident to the grieving, that was the most effective parts of the movie.

Sorry to hear about your sister. That must be tough. Dont know if it's any consolation, but this stranger has your family in my prayers. I agree about the grieving segment. It was raw and captured it in a way I've never seen in film. Maybe my repertoire is lacking, but that whole section was exemplary. I thought it was brilliant. No cats jumping out of closets, no BOO gotcha bullshit. It was a slow burn of wtf is going on. I’m glad it didn’t scare these guys, and I haven’t been scared by a movie in many years, but I couldn’t sleep at all the night I saw it. Question though: Martin and Goodwin claim the movie is too slow (btw they cut an HOUR out of the film, so imagine) but then they complain about the insane climax. Do you want chaos or don’t you? Really I feel like the movie is 2 films in 1 (half character study and half spookhouse) so maybe that doesn’t work for some but I loved it myself. Claiming that the added character(s) eventually added nothing to the film is making me wonder if Goodwin was high when he saw it because that is just straight up untrue. Also there are no “macguffins” as far as I remember. Everything happened for a reason to my recollection.
@hedgehogkiller1990
@hedgehogkiller1990 6 жыл бұрын
I love DT, but too slow is complaint they have a lot especially Martin. Honestly though, go back and watch movies like The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, The Thing, Alien, and The Exorcist. All of those movies are extremely slow paced. Sometimes film critics can try too hard to look for thematic elements in order to seem smart, but I kind of feel like Double Toasted sometimes goes too far in the other direction where focus their reviews entirely on plot, script, and character and miss or don't seem to be concerned about what a film is trying to say thematically.

I think the ending is being misunderstood in the case of the characters actions. SPOILERS: There technically wasn't any real reason for the son to run out of the house. He just woke from a coma and was trying to make sure his family was ok after hearing some noises. True...he sees his father burnt up and that's a red flag but before he can react...his mother runs after him (which could be seen by the son as her sleep walking). By the time he runs up to the attic it's too late. Plus he does that because he felt safe. He didn't know there were actually demons fucking with him or causing supernatural nonsense. Hell that could be argued when he performs the saaince. He's scared but not truly convinced or suspicious of demons moving things...floating and what not.

I hate it when people boil down horror movies to “Well...it didn’t scare me so it sucks”. The Thing doesn’t scare me at all but the movie is fantastic (one of my favorite movies of all time). The Babadook didn’t scare me at all but the directing and Essie Davis’ performance were amazing. The list goes on and on. A lot of people are terrified by The Babadook and The Conjuring (as examples), and while I like both of those movies, I don't find them very scary. The monsters/demons in those movies are kind of corny to me when they're shown, and I never really get immersed in the story because I don't believe it. Hereditary on the other hand feels more real to me. So when shit gets really wild and crazy in the final act, I'm so immersed in the story and feel so connected to the characters that somehow it feels believable to me and that is bone chilling.

Exactly. For years I kept hearing about The Exorcist, and on a scare scale of 1-10 I'd put it at a 2. Saying a film is the scariest movie ever is like saying a film is the best ever, totally subjective as you say.

2 years late, but Hereditary is one of my favorite films ever. The first movie that made me audibly gasp and turn away in a theater, and it's one of my favorite movies to break down and find meaning in, which there is a ton of. I think it might be my favorite horror movie...probably not the scariest, but definitely my favorite.
@Sab_MJsMama

The film not only took its time in building dread and suspense, in my mind qualities of a classic horror movie, their are clues and easter eggs throughout the movie that qualify it for repeat viewings. I think this is what folks don't get when they see it the first time. Like you guys, this movie doesn't get the credit it deserves because it doesn't operate from a typical one note genre classification. You were told to expect certain things and you didn't get the payoff you expected. It was paced as it should have and cutting it shorter, I think would've done it a disservice....just like calling this one of the scariest movies ever. I think it's one of the most disturbing movies we've seen in a long time.

Arthouse movies are not for everyone but idk why you guys had to use the term “snobby” just bc it premiered at festivals and whatnot before coming to theaters. This movie was fantastic in my opinion, and I didn’t even know about any reviews before going in. I was literally shaking when I left the theater.

Ellie Plunkett same here, also my jaw literally dropped multiple times. I even was the only one in the theater. And it was a Sunday night screening so when I went to the toilet after and then left the theater there was literally no one else around. And to top that off I had nightmares. I've seen some french extremity movies that didn't disturb me as much. Btw I don't even believe in supernatural stuff

Hi, I live in Japan so I dunno what the media was saying about this film until I watched your review. I listen to Bobby Lee's podcast though and he mentioned he loved this movie but didn't say anything else about it except that it was a horror and he watched it 3 times in theaters, so I was like "Dang, I've got to watch this." So no, I didn't know about any of the hype going into it, and dude, I was effing scared. It scared me with images and scenes I've never seen in a horror. And story wise, it was really interesting. And I genuinely cared about these characters. Even Charlie. I think this was the scariest movie I've seen to date.

The movie was cool, but the last 30 minutes were disappointing. We find out exactly what's going on with around 30 minutes left in the film. And then... no surprises... plotwise things turn out as they were expected to. There were some creepy images, but no real surprises. They could have done something more. Something unexpected.

5 years old! Evil itself can be hereditary Toni Collette totally owns this performance as a mother struggling to get past all the pain and loss, it's a tour de force There's impressive camera angles involving minature dollhouses and the artistry is really good I was actually shocked to see that Charlie gets taken out so early despite the ads touting her as the selling point You totally get the family dynamics even if it isn't outright terrifying 2 hours is a bit much but it's scary that the writers don't leave many answers which works in its favor It has a strong mood to boot and undeniably unsettling with enough dread Odd though on Cinemascore audiences gave it a D+ But this ended up paving the way for more indie horror Dark, disturbing, and full of freaky images that will stay with you after it's done The ending is very divisive to say the least and there's plot holes you can't help but notice Still, there's still a pitch black exploration of family dynamics

His roommate in adjacent room or apartment could smell something bad but days maybe weeks pass he doesn't do anything. It's his family that's looking for him his roommate was like hes been gone cause he was suppose to be on trip they looked in his room and found him. Of course roommate was a suspect cause all that time he smelled something bad but didn't do anything

Psycho is probably one of the scariest movies ever!! Hitchcock was a boss! I was a kid in the 60s! So that type of horror, or terror was new. The movie starts out with the headliner stealing from her bank. But it turns into something else before the first half hour!! The movie’s been turned on its head! And the headliner, Janet Leigh was killed off... in the first half hour!!!!! So fresh, so good.... back then! Now THAT is some toasty goodness too!
