In this video I move my Herman Stone surface plate off its original base and set it on the end of one of my work benches. I needed the floor space mor than I needed the bench space.

Over a lifetime ihave accumulated about 1000 kg of stuff which I always said would come in handy someday. It fills up my daydream box, and sits there slowly rusting away. I can’t help myself…..it is a genetic weakness. I have given instructions that it be buried alongside me when I finally fall off the perch!!! Stavros

I'm paying attention! Got a 600 pound tabletop lathe on an old repurposed restaurant back kitchen table. Despite a rock solid frame, that table needs help IF I'm ever going to get the lathe level with more than itself. No bed twist - but still looks like it's falling in super slo-mo. Thanks for sharing!

Alan, a lot of people will grab something in town and then go out and hang out by the bridge. I had something similar happen with glued pads under my surface plate. I ended up just using cushioned leveling feet from McMaster. Just mounted them upside down in the top of the cart I built. Adjustable and a ball and socket to take up any alignment issues.

You never know when those scrap pieces will come in handy. That would have taken a lot of material and work to bring to the scrap usable state. I try to save as much as I can from the scrap bin. I may have it for years with out a use, but have you ever noticed if you finally junk it, no longer than six weeks afterwards, you will find a use for it. Great job Gary, thanks very much for sharing. I am definitely going to put this concept in the To-Do-List when I get my surface plate. Thanks very much.

Gary, I too have one of those beater calipers. Been trying to destroy it for years, but it just won't quit -- glass cover over the dial is long gone and it's been hacked every which way imaginable. Got a brand-new B&S ready to use that still sits in it's case after 30 yrs ... but no need as long as I can clip-off any burrs on the beater or dress it with an Arkansas and still maintain it's accuracy. Out of silver solder after all that you got from Tom ??? And I confess to being a surface plate abuser. Can't say if I've ever located the original tri-points on any of them and I'm not about to lift them to look . Too late in the game, now . This time you cut into my bedtime with this "marathon" vid LOL ! 'Til next time ...... keep up the good work ! - Ken

Ken, when I mention in my video that I am running low on silver solder you can assume I’m doing the project at work and not at home. LOL I think I paid around $30.00 for those calipers over 30 years ago. I definitely got my use out of them. Thanks for stopping by. Gary

That's great for you to have Gary. Nice way to set it up. I knew you would use loctite somewhere. Have you branched out on your own doing the valves? Take care.
@OldIronMachineWorks
@OldIronMachineWorks Жыл бұрын
Randy, I am definitely a fan of Loctite. For almost 22 years now I have been rebuilding all the compressor valves at work, and it has been a huge part of my day job. But I have taken on many other jobs at work that require a lot of my time so I have moved the valve operation to my home shop and are now doing them on the side. So now after spending a day at work I come home and spend a few hours working on Valves, it definitely cuts into my KZfaq time. I have not showed much of rebuilding Valves on my channel but I guess I could show a little bit more about the process of doing the valves. Hope you’re doing well, I think you’re due for another video out yourself. Always great to have you stop by the channel. Gary

Any idea what you will do for a cover? I have a smaller import granite plate that I'd like to keep in it's current OK-ish condition, but still be able to use the horizontal surface.
@OldIronMachineWorks
@OldIronMachineWorks Жыл бұрын
I actually have a large screen that I saved from an old big screen TV. It’s like a plexiglass material that I will cut to put on the plate to protect it. I rebuild a lot of natural gas Compressor valves and I always need a place to set them while I’m working on them. So I don’t see where I’m losing bench space. Appreciate you checking out the video. I was watching some of your Jeep videos this weekend, I have a CJ 5 that has been sitting in my backyard for years and I’m getting more inspired to get it up and running again. Gary

The old caliper argument if you have a tool which you use or modify for a non standard function and you recognise it as such what is the problem. Only an idiot buys a £5 paint can key to open a tin of paint when there is a £1 screwdriver on the next shelf or better still a knackered knife. pry bar or other tool sitting in your tool box.
