Sick and tired of lower back pain or sciatica? In this video I share with you the 7 tell tale signs of a herniated or bulging disc. But for a fully comprehensive look at all possible sources of your back or sciatica pain, grab your free copy of my 👉 "Better Than An MRI DIY Diagnostic Guide" - www.drcharliejohnsonpt.com/di...
Here are the 7 Tell Tale Signs:
1. Back pain that comes and goes. Does your lower back "got out" on you every once in-a-while...then just seems to go away on its own only to return next year?
2. Central lower back pain that feels achy or stiff.
3. Sciatica down the back of the leg or wrapping around the front of the leg from the lower back. Did you know that the number one cause of sciatica is a herniated disc?
4. Pain worsens with sitting. When we sit we put pressure on the front of our disc- which causes the stuff inside the disc to move backwards and puts pressure on the disc and nerves...causing pain, numbness, or tingling.
5. Pain worsens with going from sitting to standing.
6. Pain worsens with coughing or sneezing
7. Feels better standing
There you have it- 7 tell tales signs of a herniated or bulging disc.
Comment below and share your lower back pain story!

I have 5 herniated discs . Three of them on my neck and 2 others on my lower back . Sometimes the pain is unbearable and irritating 😠... But the worse part is when people don’t understand me or say that I’m exaggerating . It’s really upsetting .

I heard that the pain is similar to birth pains. As a woman that had children, I can attest that, yes, it's very similar but at least with birth pains, they go away as soon as the baby pops out.

No mention of femoral nerve pain which affects groin/hip and front of thigh. Ive just recovered from a herniated disc which impinged my femoral nerve. Pain was unbearable for about a month but as soon as I was able to walk although still with pain I just kept walking as often as I could to the point where I could jog on grass. Im now running 4 times a week about 20 miles. I believe the walk/running helps remove the debris from the herniation that puts pressure on the nerve

I had a herniated disc in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Each time I did chiropractic adjustments & decompression, PT, meds, steroid injections, ect. In 2017 I had yet another herniation but nothing worked. I even added in accupunture but I got progressively worse. 6 months later and I can barely stand more than 30 seconds and I have constant excruciating pain. MRI showed a large herniation this time and in 3 days I'm finally having microdiscectomy surgery. I'm 34 yrs old, and just can't continue to live like this. I'm severely depressed. Hoping this surgery works.

@@cshell48991 Wow, nice to hear surgery worked for you. I'm the opposite of many here. For me, it hurts to stand up straight, it hurts to lie down and relax on my stomach or back. I can lie on my back without pain if I bend (a lot) either one of my legs. The only way to avoid pain on my stomach is to put three pillows under my waist area. It's all related to how I have to lean forward slightly when standing to avoid pain, and then that makes my lower back tired by the end of a long work shift.

I have no pain in the back of my legs but it's all in the front - I'm a weightlifter and squatting is nearly impossible as both hips feel excruciating pain. It also hurts when sitting, walking etc .. I've seen a physiotherapist who said it's a disc problem and told me to do no flexion exercises but to do some sloppy push ups and similar exercises, these make my low back "ache" when it was only my front legs before.. does any of this sound familiar? Should I get a second opinion? I'm only 24

My lower back pain started a couple or so months ago and never had it before I think. It hurts more the longer I sit and especially when I try to get up from a chair. When I lay down for a while the pain goes away mostly until I move around to my sides or try to get up. I tried taking a couple hot baths and bought a lower back stretcher but doesn't seem to help. I recently ordered heat pads so hopefully that helps?

Now I am buying different mattresses, trying all the NSAID's. I have been told to go to a chiropracter by my wife many times. Could this be a solution? I feel all of it except #4 and #7 I feel the opposite. When Im standing for morethan 5min I feel uneasy because the pain is recurring and when I sit down I feel slighly releived cause the pain is decreasing, however, if Im in one position for a period of time. Say .. 5min.. and I want to change position (specially when lying down), it's hard for me to do so cause I need to look for a position where there are no pain before I can move and switch to my next position. Is it also a sign of slipped disc?

Hello Doctor, My lower back pain to my right hip started June 2016. It moved to my right thigh in July, August and September. In October I had an MRI which revealed I had an L4/ L5 disc protrusion to the right along with mild central spinal stenosis. November 2016 the pain moved below the knee to the foot. Calf pain is very painful. A little numbness in my foot after standing and then goes away. The pain has been persistent through December January February 2017. It was starting to feel better early February and then the past week the pain returned. I did physical therapy for a month and a half started in November. It didn't help. With spinal stenosis the McKenzie exercises was making my pain worse. I also tried the decompression table. It didn't help either. I'm trying not to lift anything heavy and also trying not to bend so much. I feel relief when I am in a yoga child's pose position. I'm trying not to get surgery. I only take mild over-the-counter painkillers as needed. My questions for you Doctor are the following: How long will it take to heal? What should I avoid doing? What should I do to speed up the healing process? What are my restrictions? Will I benefit from walking more? Will the symptoms start to vanish from the foot going up? I thank you so much for your responses!

It's the worse pain to the point u don't want to move and trying to stand is horrific. Every time that happens my lower back throbs and I can barely walk. I can't sleep in my bed , i sleep in my recliner. This has been going on for 2 weeks and I have no idea what triggered it.

I’m not sure if I have a sprain or herniated disc. Someone tackled me in lower back 4 weeks ago and it still hurts, but has gotten better. I don’t have any tingling sensation or number in lower legs. I’m hoping it’s just a sprain and goes away in a few weeks.

Recently got out of a chair at work and and didnt notice anything but lil stiffness...bout few days later i couldnt roll over in bed was in severe pain near my tailbone. I had to do a workplace form incident report. I went to the hospital and all they did was xrays on my back and said looked good. Sent me home with naproxen. Since then the pain level is lower but i struggle getting out of bed and up from sitting. I know alot had changed because i cant jus jump up no more. My friends and family told me sciatica. I didnt belive it could be that painful. Im scared to sneeze because my lower back hurts.

Im thinking i have a herniated disc possibly l2 or 3. I re-injured myself today and my pain is the worst its ever been. Hilariously i hurt myself while relaxing laying in bed with my feet up i could feel my back stretching in a weird way and didnt correct it, that was 3 days ago, i woke up ok this morning and went to work where i bend, lift, kneel and stoop a bunch. By lunch i couldnt sit, my leg started spasming right above my knee on my right side (it did this the rest of the painful evening). On my fortunately very short drive home i was trying to lay down flat bc sitting is so painful. The pain is on my outter hip wraps over my front thigh. My back hurts from laying down so much but it hurts to stand too. Thank you for having videos explain what is causing these syptoms.

What do I have? Disc or muscle? I have pain right on my spine area and it started while tying shoes (though bending over has always been uncomfortable for a while). There is no tingling, no numbness. Just very localized on one location on the spine about 5 inches above tailbone. Very mild while laying down. Not that bad when sitting but worse for sure. I think standings is worse if not the same as sitting..Sharp pain when moving (getting up, sitting down) -- worse when bending and worst when bending to pickup weight even as less as 5 pounds. it got a bit better 5 days latter but still there.

Hello Charlie, A couple of days ago I was leaning over lifting something heavy out of my car trunk. That evening, I felt pain whenever I would cough or laugh. I felt around my spine with my hand and noticed a tender localized area about in the middle of my spine (about 3" above my belly button) I also noticed that when I push down on that area or lean up against a wall, then there isn't any pain when I cough. Not feeling any numbness or tingling in my legs. Hardly ever get back unless I lift stuff incorrectly. Also I'm a runner and I occasionally get sciatica or piriformis - which I currently have - don't think they're related because I've been having this long before my back pain started. Makes no difference whether I sit or stand. Come to think of it, it actually feels better when I sit because the chair helps brace my back - I have something to push against when I cough. So anyway, what just happened? Do I need to see a doctor immediately or can I wait this out? How long will it take to start feeling better? Thank you.

It gets wors when sitting for a long time, bendin foreward or trying to lift something. Hi Doctor, so glad I came across this video. I have been suffering from most of these symptoms for the past 7 weeks. I injured myself in the gym and made it worse after attending a few weeks course where I had to sit on a not so ergonomical chair. Most of the pain is around the hip / upper buttocks region and I rarely get sciatica. It is really hard sitting down as the discomfort worsens. When I'm comparing it with week one I'm feeling so much better, but it still hurts after sitting down. I'm an engineer by profession so have to sit for long hours in front of the computer. I have seen an orthopaedic surgeon who said that it is a disc prolapse and should heal on its own and reffered me to a physical therapist who have asked me to do a variety of core strengthening exercises which I'm doing daily. I have been active all my life I'm getting impatient by the day. Is there anything more I can do to speed up the recovery apart from the core strengthening exercises?

Hello Doctor, thanks for the reply. It has started to make a huge difference by making sure I sit tall. This week I'm also able to bend forward with my back straight and knees bent. The exercises I do currently are back strengthening ground exercises and transverse Abdominus exercises. I'm also walking every day for an hour. I'm able to walk and bend forward now completely pain free although it gets a bit achy while sitting but better than before. Thanks to all your videos on herniated discs.

I injured my pariformus muscle riding a bicycle and immediately after that I noticed I wasn't really getting any better and I work out quite a bit too. I haven't worked out in about 13 weeks per Dr order's. I've finally had an MRI so we'll see what the next steps are hopefully non surgical. 🙏 . I'm resting icing medicine and heat too. @@salmash9471 it took almost 6 months to heal and I'll feel if I over do it but I can move now. I had to do physical therapy and she gave me stretches for it and I started to put heat on it like a hot pad because it was so long to heal. The main stretch that helped was the figure 4 stretch and lying on my back and lifting my legs 10 times on each side and then lying on my side doing crab leg lift for both legs. It was a combo of multiple things but I've finally moving with no pain in my lower back down my legs. I also did band leg training. I just finally stopped exercising extremely hard for now. The pain has lessened due to proper stretching and whatever proper measures its taking to repair this .It only aches when i sit sometimes .Some days are better than others. Its not a serious condition i guess. But i feel i reached a plateu w progress. Will the aching and sharp pain go away in time ? Im 30years old. Im able workout but obviously cant do anything w my lower back. Will i have this forever or will it take months for it to slowly heal? Thnks

Dr, I wanted to get your thought on some lower back pain I am experiencing. I want to start off by saying that I do exercise very much and I am definitely not overweight or old. I am 19 years old. I was a competitive long distance runner before I started lifting weights. I currently run and lift weights. I also do barbell back squats which is where I think I got my back pain from. I have watched many instructional videos on squats and I am sure I have good form, but I still feel the pain in lower back. There was also a time when I ran competitively and I experienced lower back pain for 2 weeks and I had not lifted any weights. So recently I was doing squats with 135 pounds ,which is lighter than I usually go, and I hurt my lower back when I came up from the squat. I immediately stopped and I could not really walk. The pain was not crazy intense, but I was in quite a bit of pain to where it was hard to walk. A few minutes later I was able to walk, but I was walking strangely (almost as if I was tilted to my side). I felt no pain down my legs or anywhere else and I had no problems using the restroom . The pain I felt was only in my lower back and in my left side near my buttocks. I feel like it might be in the lumbar area but the left side. It lasted that night and the day after. The morning after the injury, I went to the doctor and he gave me anti inflammatory medication and he said that I was probably feeling SI joint pain. I did some research and I think I remember the si joint being somewhere near the pelvis and it did not look like that was where I was feeling the pain. Also from what I've been seeing online, it looks like bulging discs causes pain that extends down your leg. Dr, if you can please give me your thought on this I would really appreciate it! Thank you! If anyone here can help as well, I would appreciate it!

@@lohit9324 I’m still experiencing pain. However, I can still lift heavy and run. There was a month when my pain was debilitating for a month after I slept wrong. My low back was alright before that. However, I still have to be careful. I’ve done lots of spine stability exercises that u should probably focus on. Also core strengthening exercises. I actually plan on going back to the doctor to let them know I’m still having problems and what else I can try but overall I’m doing alright.
