The Montclair Ambulance Unit is a vital part of the community of Montclair Township. They are in the suburbs of New York City but located in Essex County, New Jersey. With a population of approximately 40,000 residents, they are the 60th most popular township in New Jersey. Montclair Ambulance Unit has faithfully served the area since 1953 as a nonprofit asset. They moved into a retired firehouse in 2004/2005. The main reason for choosing this location was the building's design and deep history. The board felt a strong need to stay connected to the community it serves, so by choosing a firehouse built in 1906, they could meet that goal. The firehouse sits right in the middle of residential and commerce. The Montclair Ambulance Unit operates in a two-tiered system which means they are the BLS transport while their ALS partners are based out of the local hospitals.
Chief James Mazza and Deputy Chief Michael Craig walk us around the station providing us with their history, mission, and vision for the service. It was awesome to see the creativity and commitment of the administration to serve not only Montclair township but also participate in the New Jersey EMS Task Force. As a staff member being part of a Task Force you could make responses all over the state and beyond. This means you are working for a department that sees the big picture of the healthcare system. Montclair Ambulance Unit is a desirable place to work.
Not all EMS units are attached to fire departments, many throughout the United States are independent. Montclair Ambulance Unit is a shining example of how an EMS service should operate. They focus on diversifying their skills to meet the needs of the community and its surroundings. If you are interested in joining the department please check out their website at MontclairEMS.org. They can always use your help and donations.
Thank you so much for watching this episode with Montclair Ambulance Unit, we were very excited to learn about the service and the area. If your company is interested in becoming part of Heroes Next Door, send us an email at watchheroesnextdoor@gmail.com so that we can get you on the schedule. Stay tuned for another episode next week.

I absolutely love that Map wall , what a total genius concept and creation , and when the Assistant Chief said about people taking time to look up an address on the computer and he then just flips the switch on the Map wall , I actually laughed out loud , I simply LOVE It ! Sure it may be a bit out of date , but they are genius for keeping it in service that's all .(edit) PS : I am a map nerd though , so I may be a bit biased .

I love the family feel of a small ambulance station. We, for the most part, still have our small stations in rural Wales. Large towns, like much of the rest of the UK, now use ‘Make Ready’ centres. We are all ALS though.

That is great! Using older firehouses as EMS stations should be done a lot more. When I was an EMT, we had to park on a street corner for our shift. Just a suggestion- you should profile Bed-Stuy Volunteer Ambulance in Brooklyn New York. They have a great program !

28:30 teaching a 5yr old to intubate is good but I wonder if at that young age it would even stick in their head or scare them a little. Again not a bad thing to teach at a young age just curious as to how kids would handle that info

Are they not allowed to provide ALS care, due to the hospitals providing that care. Or does the company just chose to be BLS only? Edit: sounds like it's a New Jersey thing! I should have watched the whole video before posting the comment 🤣

Actually I am not much either, my city it makes since as we only have one hospital and one EMS station and none of the FD stations run EMS one or two townships might run them but those are even hospital ambulances based at a township fire station. As for me not liking it, if it’s a big city I’d rather see it as a fire department ran or contracted AMR and MMR or so on as they are more likely to transfer you to a closer hospital or a hospital of your choice if able and not the hospital it’s assigned to.
