Every station has to have a beginning and it just so happens that Lebanon Fire Company started on April 11th, 1923. The citizens of that area got together and saw a need that needed to be filled. One of those citizens immediately offered to donate $100 towards the project. It took just a couple more years before they finished raising the money and building the station. Officially the building was completed in 1928.
This building became a key resource for the community. It shared space with a grocery store,. Not to mention it was the central location of safety during the cold war era as a fallout shelter. The thing that stood out the most to use was the fact the upstairs was a movie theater, a social hall, and remains the shelter during natural disasters.
Jason Strauss the firefighter who invited HND walked us through the station. He explains the complete history including the changes that have taken place over the years. Being of the new generation, he knows his stuff and was a perfect host. Check them out at ( www.18Fire.org )

In Stockholm, Sweden, there is a still working firehouse called ”Katarina brandstation” that has been operational since 1 of july 1872. Part of the station is since the 1780’s when it housed the so called cityguard that was a predecessor to what to day The Greater city of Stockholm fire department. Today its one of the four most central firehouses in Stockholm city and houses a pumper/rescue unit and a ladder unit.

We have a firehouse that is over 100 years old. The issues our volunteers face is that the basement floods from time to time and the creek going below our city will overflow into it… You can even cast a line and fish… Hopefully we can replace the structure soon. It’s awesome to see these old firehouses. PS: That’s a Polaris Ranger, not a gator ;)

In Milford Connecticut Fire Headquarters was built in 1928 and is in full service, updated over time, main apparatus floor was reinforced to support the weight of newer trucks and engines, a bay was added to accommodate the tower truck and kitchen and restrooms for male and female firefighters.

Even keepin' it traditional with those old Code 3 XL lightbars and the Federal AeroDynic on the brush truck! I'm pretty sure Code 3 discontinued that model back in the mid-90s and replaced it with the MX7000, so Lebanon intentionally elected to pull these off their old rigs to put on their current ones. Interesting contrast with the new-ish Whelen RB6s and LED Roto-Rays in the lower A zone on the three Seagraves, too, which makes the choice even more curious. Halogens and rotator motors are serious power hogs--you can literally watch the amp meter in the gauge cluster spin precipitously counterclockwise whenever you flip the switch to power them up--so hanging on to outdated technology wouldn't be my first choice, and I'm salty enough to remember when you could buy either of these lightbars brand new. But, hey, to each their own and I respect Lebanon for that little extra helping of old school.

You should really come visit central fire station in Sioux Falls, SD. It was built in 1913. It is in the national register of historic places. The gym is the old hay loft from when they used horse drawn engines. It's a beautiful station. There's a great KZfaq video all about it.

Great looking station, and if sometime down the road, they have to close this down, hope that somebody can make it their own home, it would almost be like living in a mansion, with 5 garages, and dont know how many bedrooms and bathrooms, and if correct in all of those garages, they could probably fit at least over 10 vehicles, since the ones on the far right of the station are much larger on the inside than the other ones. but anyways they made a very good decision Building this station, if you dont mind me asking, that green house which is sitting right in front of the station, is that somebodys Private home, or does that belong to the fire dept as well????

There’s no national standard to what you call an apparatus. Ive seen ambulances and brush trucks called Squads or rescues. There needs to be a standard or something more standard especially with increase need for auto aid and mutual aid. A typical Squad is a dual purpose engine company that has special operations capabilities of either hazmat or rescue. If they are first due to a structure fire (usually in their response area) they can operate as an engine company. FDNY set the standard to what a Squad is and what a Rescue is.
