@@ChazWalser While I'm sure that's a nice thought, it is simply unrealistic. Great blue herons can and do prey on cygnets. They are opportunistic hunters and will eat whatever they can. It's unfortunate, but cygnets do fall victim to predation now and then regardless of how aggressive the parents are. Imagine the effort it takes for a heron to attack and kill an adult duck, or a snapping turtle, and then apply that to one briefly unattended baby swan. This is simply how nature works.

Yeah, in my camera club someone brought a photo of a landing swan once. It had been commented by a pilot as very close to plane landing. Including the corrections done by the swan and adequate ones that would have to be done by a plane pilot in that situation. The only reason it wasn't accepted by National Geographic was that their policy is that photos can't be manipulated and this one was a stacked one to show all stages of landing in one photo.

I've been in the avian field now for the better part of 30yrs. Having "hands on" experience with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey and Budgies to Macaws. And these Mute Swans were clearly having NO PART of that Heron coming into there territory. And rightfully so as Herons especially the large species can easily kill a signet with ease. Mute Swans and Swans in general are VERY aggressive birds. If you are in there territory or they deem you a threat to there chicks you had better head the other direction...!!! A few slaps of there VERY powerful wings and a well placed bite will most certainly leave you bruised and battered. Trust me folks i know from past experiences with these huge birds.
