Peter I am watching this video 3 weeks post operation for my knee being re-built… so I can empathize for your arm injury. Taking care of my bonsai without the ability to bear weight on my leg has made it, well, basically impossible. So all of my trees are growing freely just now! 😂 Including my one and only trident maple.

I hope your arm is better now Peter. 👍 For me the jury is out regarding trident maples: I personally prefer the more elegant, showy maples over some of these “sumo” trees with exaggerated taper, though I recognise the skill and care that has gone into developing them.

Hi Peter!! I SO feel for you, regarding your shoulder pain! Due to some past circumstances, I frequently have shoulder and sometimes neck pain to go along with it. It really is true, you don't realize how much you use something until you can't. I hope it gets better SOON for you! I am thankful for the videos you create. Especially ones like this, where you go over many of the same type of trees, doing the same process, because our trees needs might not be addressed if you only did one tree. Thoughts and prayers for you and your shoulder/arm! Sometimes it really does suck getting old, doesn't it? 🥲😒🤕😊😎 Thank you, Peter, for all you share with us in these wonderful videos!!

Hi Peter Love these Trident Maples , even with one arm out of action your trees and knowledge never cease to amaze us. I’m in my bed suffering from covid at the moment but what a boost for morale watching your fantastic videos, Hope your arm is better soon I’m sure its no good me telling you to rest up……. As a fellow sufferer of shoulder pain I can highly reccommend Milwaukee Tools smallest batery powered reciprocating saw. So small it can be operated with one hand, but tough enough to cut seasoned bamboo. best wishes kirk

Only wish I could someday see MY Tridents this mature.. absolutely gorgeous tree...."Tridents....love them, or hate them..." I have three, I love them, but I get so lost when it comes to keeping them well groomed. This spring growth so far, was unbelievably vigorous, that my 12 year old's look like bushes again, after working on them so much last year! Not to mention all my other trees. They are growing so fast, shooting so many branches, I am still trying to work out if I should let them harden off before cutting the new growth back, or start shaping now. I think you mentioned I should be cutting now.

I got a purpurum sycamore to sprout! It's so red and wrinkly 🤩 three trident maple sprouts survived, and two curly paper bark lobed leaf maple sprouts. They grow so slow, except for the sycamore.

I ran chainsaw for a wild fire crew, over about a decade in Oregon. I see a lot of advice about your cutting tools. The truth is, that bladed saws are engineered to be suitable for a small range of sizes depending on tooth width. Think of timber cross cut saws from the 1920's, those teeth are huge and inches apart. For metal it's small and really close. Larger branches/trunks you want very wide broad teeth. Single direction cutting, with a clearing stroke on return is ideal, if you stick with bladed hand saws, bi directional cutting gums the wound up and causes the sap to burn to the blade making it infinitely more difficult. But if it's only rated to cut 2-3" then that's what it maxes out at. Longer doesn't mean thicker branches it means more continuous strokes. Bigger teeth, like grades of sandpaper, means bigger branches/trunks. On the other hand, any handheld battery powered chain saw that has at least an 8" bar will do more than the same amount of work. You do not need to keep the 8" bar on it, just that it is rated to handle one. Round grinder chainsaw blades will catch every time, and you need lots of muscle to hold them still. Reciprocating saws also catch and you need to hold them tightly. The least effort cut will be made with a flat longbar chainsaw. Whether you go with gas or charge, does not matter for the work you are doing. Honestly battery tech has come a long way, I would suggest getting a brand name with a warranty, and some extra batteries. You will thank yourself in the long run.

Re: reciprocating saw. You can get a pruning blade that is similar to a Silky saw or bow saw blade. It should make your saw much more effective, although the width will be a bit bigger than the blade you have.

I regards to the reciprocating saw their are blades that work well on green wood. The blade in your saw has to fine of teeth for green wood. You have developed the most beautiful place/ nursery.

Peter you need a different blade for the sawzall. I use that saw and cut through huge trunks easily. They sell all types of replacement blades, there is a white one called Diablo that shreds trunks with ease.

Hey Peter glad to hear your arm is healing! I've seen another youtube video by greenwood bonsai the owner Corbin he is in the uk also uses a handheld chainsaw and its really small to cut thick branches.maybe worth a shot at looking into one of those to cut branches way to thick. Great video! When you said if it were that easy everyone would be doing it I broke out laughing . Take care peter

Thanks for the tips and tricks. I enjoy the process and reasoning you are imparting to us. I understand now about the die-back and I am going to try pruning this year's summer growth in the spring of next year. Also, the reciprocating saw is handy when you need to remove thick roots from trees you are removing from the ground. Enjoy these spring days! Great work boys.

Peter, your new reciprocal saw cuts on the back stroke un like many saws. Make sure the branch you are cutting is jammed tightly against the metal plate and it will cut cleanly, if you don’t the branch will shake violently and the cut will take a long time. It will cause unnecessary damage to your plant. There will be a big difference if you do this. Shorter finer blades are also available which might be better for your needs. I was sorted out in just five days although my GP: told me that a Frozen shoulder can take 18months to 3 years to sort out.

Great vid Peter. I must invest in a trident beautiful! I did say last autumn that I had a problem with my white pine poor growth no candles thought it was the beginning of the end of the tree, but after giving it a little raking of the roots a using the Peter chan moss trick I'm glad to say we have a plethora of candles now! O,dear,I am familiar with a frozen ,locked up shoulder ,please take care,it will take time. Meanwhile I'm afraid you will have to put up with doing things in the way you possibly can,not the way you would like to! And ofcourse with the help from your crew! That works well apparantly up till now! Always love and learn a lot from you almost every day! Hope your arm will get better with time. Thank you for sharing!

The electric recip. saw works best if you put that shoe or guide against the branch. Otherwise the branch just moves with the blade, and doesn't get cut.

Steady Peter, I hope you haven't torn anything. Get well soon, I hope its not serious 🙏. Beautiful tridents! but it did concern me when you started cutting off a burl as an example and then stop and leave the cut unfinished, germs could get inside.
