In this video I show you how to correct a reverse taper on a somewhat difficult Cascading Scots Pine. We do some carving and I explain the points to consider when choosing a pot. In the end this tree becomes a more stylised bonsai.

Merry Christmas Peter & Co. This gave me some great ideas, my 60+ year old Juniper that I dug up is starting to show some growth, can't wait for spring so I can figure out where to trim it since it's over 4' long, one root had most of the small roots so I will have to see if some sprout out the other direction so I can trim it to a smaller pot but just happy to see I didn't kill it and it was saved from the dump.

I really like this sweeping tree. I have a little tree that an over enthusiastic person put a nasty nick in the trunk with a electric saw. I filled it with plaster and then used acrylic paints to blend it in. No one can see it even if I point it out.

When you were struggling with the nippers on the Jin, I thought you might prefer a tool that blacksmiths (farrier, horseshoes) use. They are bigger more powerful nippers used to cut the extremely hard horse’s hoof. Very sharp. Have you ever seen one of those?

Being a carpenter since i was 15 i always worry about the way people hold their knifes. A carpenter's razor would have worked nicely as long as you do not pry with it. A sharp knife may seem more dangerous but a dull knife will cut you just as easily. Remember to always cut away from your hand that isn't holding the knife. Wish everyone good health in 2020.

Hello Peter! I was recently looking through my copy of bonsai master class, and in the chapter about raising seeds and cuttings is a section about clip and grow training and a section on wiring young material. It mentions in the clip and grow method a 2 year old tree is transplanted grown out for another year and is cut back to half original height in the spring of the 4th year. I was hoping you could clarify what this means, whether it means cutting back to half the original 2nd year growth or half of the new growth produced in the 3rd year. The book mentions repeating this yearly, in slightly different wording for the 5th year cutting to just 2 or 3 nodes. I was planning on using this method for a really nice baby oak that is going into its 3rd year of growth soon. Thanks! :)

(1:13) The video has just begun and I see that she hasn't fallen so much as she is searching for something. For context: It must have been twenty years ago now, a friend who is an avid tarot reader asked me to provide some sketches for a new deck they were working on. I knew nothing of the craft at the time, but I loved the idea that a story could find life in the shuffling of a deck of cards, and what I then learned still pops up from time to time when familiar archetypes appear. This tree reminds me of what might happen somewhere between the Tower and the Star. Hope is born among the rubble of chaos and misfortune. It's the promise that all can never be lost for those who endeavor to raise another up. Anyway, enough rambling. A pot of coffee demands to be made. Then back to the video. (11:50) I was totally thinking about a Dremel while you guys were incising the bark. I hope my instincts stay on point for *at least* another week. (13:38) I'm again reminded that it's time to upgrade my Dremel. I picked up a 7300 last summer and burned up the battery pack carving just two queens and a bishop for my son's chess set. (17:28) Ha! The first time I tried using hair clippers was in training at Ft. Gordon. It was similarly disastrous. The following morning I found myself standing in formation with a hangover, a very uncomfortable chill on my freshly bald noggin, and a face full of Drill Instructor who couldn't stop laughing long enough to properly yell at me. (26:24) That's a great analogy. A while back, my wife ordered a pair of stiletto boots online. When they arrived, she wanted to try them on, but no matter how hard she shoved her feet flat-out refused to cooperate. I must've worn them around the house for three days trying to break them in for her. They now collect dust in the spare bedroom, and I'll probably never get rid of this ingrown toenail. Balance is highly underrated... The final shot shows a much more dramatic transformation than I anticipated. Are there videos available on the wiring that was done? Also, please let your assistant know that he has phenomenal taste in flannel.
@peterchan3100

There is a lot of footage showing the wiring but we thought it would be too boring so we decided to cut it out. We could put it on if you and others would like to see it. And BTW why didn't your wife send the boots back - expensive mistake!!
