Күн бұрын

Always Board Never Boring had a fantastic time at the UK Games Expo 2024, where he took a lot of (poorly focused and badly lit) photos and saw a lot of cool people and new games. In this video, he talks more about the newest expansion for Avalon Hill's edition of HeroQuest, Jungles of Delthrak.
ABNB managed to get photos of the rules for the monster keywords, full rules for the berserker, and more. Some of this information may be common knowledge by now, but it was all new to him at the time, so here are some of his initial thoughts on it all.
And of course, some time stamps:

there are so many different kinds of heores and monsters by now that you could run an entire RPG campaign just using HeroQuest minis, and all the different markers, tiles and terrain pieces only help. I am really looking forward to this one, and I am sure I'll find some dual use for the contents 😁

Female dwarf explorer immediatly dubbed "Dora" by everybody at the table. I like danger sense. I am incredibly excited for Jungles of Delthrak! I didn't think about how the Explorer and Berserker are "upgraded" forms of the Barbarian and Dwarf though, that's a nice catch! I appreciate that Avalon Hill continues to give us new Heroes rather than give the Barbarian their own Hero Cards, as it keeps them simple and gives players more interesting decisions to make. I hope you had fun at the expo! I didn't think HeroQuest had any presence at any expos, so I'll keep my eyes out in the future.

I think it's very clever how they have addressed people's desire for a more "advanced" barbarian without changing the original barbarian which could have upset some purists. Also, I do think this is the closest we are getting to a "dwarf quest pack."

Well,since we're bringing up new boards and all,you may,or may not,recall I mentioned getting one of Hasbro's D&D campaign sets from Ollie's for 3 bucks. The set contained a bunch of dungeon tiles as well as a 2 sided game board. Think of the Heroquest board but with no rooms,just the gray corridor tiles. The other side was the same but with a grass field. I couldn't help but think this would've been a great board for either a Heroquest expansion or as an "upgraded" version of the game since it offers the limited play area of Heroquest with the modularity of Advanced Heroquest. Basically,you place rooms and walls and this creates a much more modular game. So since Hasbro already has the boards,it seems to me that Avalon Hill could probably have used them to make this new board expansion/upgraded version of the game. Especially since they're big on reusing assets. Also,if you get the oppotunity,you should definitely grab the D&D campaign sets,especially the terrain one.

I think at this point they might feel a little bit "chained" to the HeroQuest board. It's almost like its trademark aesthetic, like the four corner spaces on a Monopoly board that are always the same regardless of the theme. Maybe they are concerned that moving away from that will take something away from what makes HeroQuest what it is for the fans.
@Merlynn132

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Well,that's kind of the Lego dilemma. Lego's insanely popular but Mega has better minifigs in every conceivable way. So do they stick to their iconic but limited minifigs and risk being left behind or do they move forward and futureproof their toys but risk upsetting the old school fans? Which begs the question,do you want Heroquest to get better or stay the same for the sake of nostalgia? Of course,this doesn't effect me since I have the board and can just print up the old rooms on card stock or even plastic Colorforms style stickers. So the question is,did enough people miss out to make a reprinting of the board and accessories worth the trouble? Would you buy this "upgraded" board system or would you stick to the "classic" version? Some will say yes,some will say no,but if you get enough yeses,they'll probably do it.

I've been saying for a while now in my HeroQuest reviews that it's time for HeroQuest to tread new ground. Avalon Hill did a brilliant job bringing back a faithful edition of the game, and once Wizards of Morcar comes out, I feel they will have completed on an unwritten promise to the original fans. But now it's time for them to move into new territory. Rise of the Dread Moon, the new content in Against the Ogre Horde, the fancy rules for the Wandering Monk, and now Jungles of Delthrak are all positive moves in my book to take HeroQuest in new directions and to create fresh material that will keep the game running.

Intangible furniture is an option in the app, but it's tangible by default. I don't see much point in the furniture if you can act like it wasn't there, as one of its main purposes as far as I'm concerned is to change the shape of the room and create bottlenecks to overcome. But, if you want to play with intangible furniture, agile enemies can still move through heroes and hindering terrain without any penalty.

I feel like this could be open to house rules that allow SOME ranged weapons, like thrown weapons that are lost once used, so that in a pinch the Berserker can do something in a room where they’re pinned down. As someone who generally plays solo and uses the app to do so it seems some of these rules may be difficult to implement into the app so they work or function properly. Did they mention anything about this and how the app will function or if indeed it will even be added to the app for use? You mention that the questbook doesn’t include the animal allies as a part of the story, but there is a new artifact that I assume is found within a specific quest that brings the Raptor into play. The artifact card reads: “Fangwarden Armlet: Your Raptor friend nuzzles against the palm of your hand. Use this magical armlet to call forth a Raptor animal ally. If the Raptor is defeated, the armlet's power goes dormant. Its power replenisher if the hero completes 2 quests without assistance. This artifact may only be used once per quest.” The inclusion of the artifact seems to me as a “story reason” to include the Raptor ally.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 27 күн бұрын
So, I haven't read through all the quests and can only go by what the reps have told me, but what I was told is that the animal allies don't turn up as part of the story. What I mean is, for example, a quest won't see a saberfang pop up as an NPC that you can rescue and then recruit, and there won't be a quest where your cure the blight on a crazed raptor and it then decides to come with you. Of course, keep in mind the reps may not have been completely accurate in their responses. I was asking a lot of questions.

06:11 - Ok, I wasn't expecting for that. When you said that they have an equipment restriction, my bet was that they didn't use shields, since they clearly enjoy big, two-handed weapons. But disregarding ranged weapons in favor of taking monsters close and personal makes perfect sense. By now, I feel like the HeroQuest Barbarian is more like a D&D Fighter and the Berserker is more like a Barbarian (even though the Barbarian has more Body Points than the Berserker). And for the record: I still think it's a good idea to keep Barbarian-only potions, like in The Frozen Horror and ignore the what they did in the Rise of the Dread Moon. What do you think?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 29 күн бұрын
I thought it was a really interesting restriction that ensures the barbarian is still a decent option. The barbarian also gets some barbarian items, which will help a bit. I see why they made the barbarian potions useable by everyone, but it's a bit like the spell scrolls, it does slightly diminish the characters that used to have exclusive access to those abilities. On the whole, I think I'm probably fine with it because it gives all players more tactical options, but I can see why some people wouldn't like it.
@carlosbarreto4695
@carlosbarreto4695 29 күн бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring My biggest issue with stripping the Barbarian (and the Elf, but I will focus on the Barbarian because the Elf still has the amazing Elf spells) of their exclusivity from The Frozen Horror potions is that they gave no compensation in return. The Frozen Horror, as the Barbarian expansion pack, brought items to power-up the Barbarian: Barbarian-exclusive artifacts and potion. And then came Rise of the Dread Moon to take away that potion exclusivity from the Barbarian. Ok, the Barbarian still has his exclusive artifacts. But that doesn't change the fact that he lost something that was meant to be a buff exclusive for him. About the scrolls, I never had the impression that the spell scrolls made the Wizard or the Elf diminished in anyway. The scrolls are like potions in the sense that you use it once and it's over, while the Wizard and the Elf can cast spells at _every_ quest. Besides, the scrolls can also fall in the hands of the Wizard and the Elf, increasing even further the number of spells they may cast in a quest. And finally, the Barbarian and the Dwarf (and most of the new heroes) usually are more effective just smacking down the monsters. Now, with the release of the Berserker, I think the Barbarian needs stuff that makes him special. The Berserker seems to be a better Barbarian than the Barbarian; the lack of ranged weapons is just fitting.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 28 күн бұрын
It's interesting how people view things differently. Drinking potions was never exclusively a barbarian thing, but casting spells was exclusive to spellcasters, so I see others having access to spells as something that does diminish one of the things that made the wizard special. Certainly, he can find and use the scrolls too, but they are no more effective for him than for anyone else, and I find it much more thematically jarring that the barbarian casts a healing spell or throws a fireball than it is for the dwarf to chug a potion. Ultimately, Avalon Hill have gone with choices to make teams more flexible, and because they have moved away from the idea of character-specific quests. And I think, in the end, teams will moderate themselves. "Hey, here's a potion that doubles damage, give it to the barbarian. Here's a Fireball scroll, give it to the wizard because otherwise he won't be able to contribute to the final boss fight."
@carlosbarreto4695
@carlosbarreto4695 28 күн бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Indeed, drinking potions was never a Barbarian thing. But do you agree that The Frozen Horror and the Mage of the Mirror brought to the Barbarian and Elf new options to enhance these heroes and that the hero-exclusive potions were one of these new options (along with new hero-exclusive artifacts and, in the case of the Elf, Elf-exclusive new spells)? So when RotDM made the Barbarian and Elf exclusive potions accessible to any hero, they effectively took one category of items (potions) that were designed to enhance exclusively those heroes and gave them to everybody. The effect would be the same if one expansion make the exclusive Elf and Barbarian artifacts available to everyone. I still don't see spell scrolls as a diminishing factor for Wizards. Just like in D&D, the Wizard is not diminished by the Fighter because he can find spell scrolls as treasures because the Wizard can cast spells every day on his career, while the Fighter can cast once per scroll. The same is in HeroQuest, where the Wizard and the Elf will still have an advantage that the others will never have: the ability to cast spells at every quest.

This is nothing new for HeroQuest. The miniatures have always presented the characters in their most heroic form, and that often means showing them tooled up with equipment. The core set dwarf starts with a short sword, but the miniature is carrying a double-handed axe, the wizard starts with a dagger but the miniature is carrying a staff, the elf is depicted in full elven armour, the female monk has a staff, and so on. The original European version was even worse, as the heroes didn't have starting equipment at all - their starting combat dice represented them fighting before they had acquired anything to fight with!

I understand where you are coming from, but there aren't that many animals: serpents, apes, raptors, and spiders, plus the spawnling spiders, serpents and centipedes. Of those enemies, giant spiders and giant snakes are pretty standard monster types in adventure games, and the raptors are dinosaurs. So, you're mainly looking at apes and centipedes as the only "animals." Add to that, thematically all the wildlife has been corrupted by the spread of the blight crystals to make them savage, so it doesn't feel like wandering into the woods to beat up all the cute critters. Ultimately, my feeling is Avalon Hill did a wonderful job bringing back HeroQuest and treating it with respect for all the old school fans like us. They played the nostalgia card, and once Wizards of Morcar gets a remake they have fulfilled that obligation in full. Now it's time for them to start doing something new and exploring new ideas.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring That's fair enough, and I'm really looking forward to Wizards of Morcar especially, but this will just never be for me, though - especially the "raptors" in an adventure game. Dinosaurs just isn't adventure/fantasy to me (no matter how many times they're used these days), and never will be 😕

I grew up watching the old black and white dinosaur movies and the Harryhausen stop-motion movies, one of my first board games was Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs, and my parents used to read me a Ladbybird abridged version of The Lost World over and over on request, so from a very early age I associated dinosaurs with fantasy and adventure. Conan has fought prehistoric creatures too. But yes, not everything is for everyone. I really disliked the nice orcs and the orc hero in Spirit Queen's Torment. For me, that was far removed from what I personally wanted out of HeroQuest. But, I know other people really enjoy that campaign, and as long as people are enjoying things I see it as all good for the game in general, and I can wait for the next thing that gets me really excited. Here's looking forward to Wizards of Morcar... Having seen that goblin warlock in Delthrak, surely it's close now...

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring as people have pointed out, dinosaurs were part of D&D and Warhammer Fantasy lore as well even before HeroQuest, so there you go, even if people don't remember them well

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring What I mean is that there's seemingly a reason we have dragons in stories like Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc. (just to name a few of the most popular ones) and not T-Rexes, or both, for that matter ;) We all love these adventure/fantasy stories with marvellous dragons in them, and if you suddenly mix in something like dinosaurs, it just isn't the same anymore :/ That e.g. raptors/dinosaurs have now been used multiple places (e.g. DnD, as mentioned) throughout the years doesn't really change this. To each their own though, of course. Completely agree about that :)

I think we need to be real, it's a very underwhelming set. The dwarfs axe's are so small it looks like they're going to go out and do gardening rather than fight off monsters, the quality of the sculpts are subpart, even the classic heroquest minis had cleaner more defined mold. This is not 30-50$ worth of quality content

Having held all the miniatures in hand, I don't agree. And the dwarves are using the throwing axes, not battle axes, so the size works for me. With two new hero classes, lots of brand new enemies, new plastic terrain elements, two punchboards of new components, and a 16-part branching quest, I don't think you will find a lot of people in these comments who agree with you on the value, but value is always in the eye of the beholder. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Well first and foremost I absolutely love and trust your reviews.. Secondary, just because many would disagree with me right off the bat doesn't mean they have merit in what they say. McDonald's may out-sell every restaurant in the world but it doesn't make it better. But in this case it's been proven that the pieces are not as good as the old ones. This can actually be explained with a side-by-side image. The pieces look like they've had an extra layer of gloss placed over them, softening a lot of the detail. As far as the throwing axes go, the character should be in a posse that insinuates that action, which brings me to my point that it's a lot of lazy designing. Furthermore they could have added a couple axes push the idea. I actually went to school for game design and production, and I can guarantee you that if you run these points by highly credited designers, they will in fact agree with me 9 out of 10 times on weak versus strong design to convey a characters role or prerogative. Once again thank you for responding to my critique, I will continue to watch your channel because I love it and you do such a great job. Salutations from Southern California.
