"Trash can": For volumes that store non high performance dependent datasets, general data, things like that, should be done on filesystems that support snapshots. Snapshots can then be taken frequently, COW filesystems like ZFS for example are basically free from a performance perspective. This allows you to freely browse through time and restore individual files, or even whole volumes nearly instantly. This is a much better approach to "trash" than the trash can idea.
@loren481
@loren481 2 жыл бұрын
How would I go about browsing for specific files with a BTRFS system, if possible? I'm using timeshift to make snapshots, if that matters.
@entelin
@entelin 2 жыл бұрын
@@loren481 I don't have working knowledge of btr. I looked into it recently assuming that it has become mature over the years, and was fairly disappointed at it's progress lacking even stable parity raid. Synology for example doesn't use btr's raid system but rather puts it on top of MD and has some hack to make btr's self healing work on top of it. Nonetheless though, it is apparently stable as a standalone filesystem, and snapshots and stuff are fine. So in general with BTR or ZFS you would have a task that sets up frequent snapshots like even every 5-15 mins as it takes only an instant, and then something that removes past granular snapshots to create a spectrum of something like 12 hrs of 15 mins, 3 days of hourlys, 2 weeks of dailys, and 3 months of weeklys. Snapshots can then be freely browsed through or mounted at will.
@entelin
@entelin 2 жыл бұрын
More specifically to your question though, if it's anything like ZFS there will be a hidden or invisible directory at the root of a dataset that allows directly browsing into snapshots. As well as a tool to explicitly mount them elsewhere. A which google search suggested that .snapshot might be the directory name for that on btr.

This is a pretty good philosophical debate. First of all, making money is not bad. It's good. It's a driver of both innovation and freedom, because disputes and honour can be settled in cash rather than with violence. The argument that you can just look into the code sometimes falls apart within FOSS because the code is byzantine and poorly documented. Generally, the more obscure the system is, the more poorly it's documented. And that's where FOSS programmers get paid. Or when they can get themselves into a situation where they have a very deep grasp over a certain domain of the code. This isn't "free". It's "free to use" and it's "free to look into", but if you're a serious business, you have to make absolutely sure that the code base is secure and works as intended. For that you either have to hire a dedicated engineer, or a support company, none of which are cheap. And in fact, it's often more expensive than just buying that Microsoft package from Satan. Though if you have that scale, it also lets you compete with FOSS, and in a free world, that's only fair I think. With that said, there are of course many benefits with FOSS, except they usually don't have a marketing team behind them, and that's kind of what keeps it from becoming mainstream. So we're left with lone preachers and evangelists such as Richard Stallman.

Hey DT! I really like your videos and appreciate your effort! You and other youtubers "convinced" me to use linux because of privacy and other issues. I have tried a coupe of distros, none of them worked well for me... I know, that basically every linux distro is just a kernel plus some spices on top of it (e.g desktop environment). I had to try many distros (Pop!_OS, Debian, Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Void, Zorin, Manjaro, Mint... etc), because, for some reason I couldn't successfully customize my first, second, third, etc. distros... Currently I'm running MX Linux and I find it disgusting. I hate fixing and configuring all the time. Even my keyboard doesn't work all the time, it worked in Windows. It's not a fancy RGB keyboard with 70 extra button, just a regular keyboard. I feel like Linux is like a T-shirt full of holes. I can't focus on my work, because the system just doesn't work. If I install an operating system, I expect it to work and I don't want to spend my whole lifetime reading source code and messing with the command line. I'm thinking on moving back to Windows and pay with my data for using an OS that works... (sad) I'm sure one day linux will work better than anything and I'm looking forward to it. In the current state, Linux doesn't support many productivity software like Windows and it's not efficient to work with. With Linux, you can only work either in the IT section of a company or working alone in your parents' basement. As much as I love Linux (as a Linux enthusiast), I prefer working with people from various fields (scientific, business & marketing, graphic design, literally any field that's not just IT) than working alone and spend most of the time reinventing the wheel that nobody cares. Workflow is much better when it's easier to communicate with other people. There are so MANY task-specific programs in Windows that it's no easy feat to reinvent and replace them all (in the field of computational chemistry alone for example). Even Mac users have to switch to Windows A LOT when they are working. That's the monster Linux has to face if it wants to be mainstream. You would have a very shallow view of the world (with some superiority complex) if you thought that Windows users are just for GaMeS & Ms ExCeL.

Don't you think that all Linux distros (top 20) do absolutely the same - data collection ? And yes, there is nice tui file manager called FAR MANAGER, the blue goddess of productivity, and it works now under Linux. But again, major distros are supported by commercial companies, and they are not charity organizations, they either collect your data, and I bet SO FEW people can review millions of lines of code and compile each software, so this feeling of protection and freedom is pure illusion. Especially when V-pro technology is embedded in Intel for the last 20 years.

We have to use MS at work(we are tied to proprietary hardware/software and clients who chose to use those tools). We seldom have issues with MS software, however it takes effort to achieve that. All updates are scheduled to weekends--therefore, if it takes a few hours for it to update, there is no problem. All network activity is locked down and all data is backed up, so if something were to occur, all could be restored within an hour. We also use the LTSB(LTSC) build of Windows which really cuts most of the crap out (no Cortana, only critical updates and you can choose when those updates will happen)

Nothing is cohesive and I hate the amount of time things take to get set up. My linux experience is pretty much this: 1st year of distro hopping, 2nd year of ricing the desktop, 3rd year of realizing my productivity has gone to shit ad Gnome is just functional enough, 4th year of realizing I only use the terminal for stuff that matters, 5th year of going back to Windows and switching to WSL2.

Go back to the very beginning with them: The Linux kernel was created by someone who couldn’t afford Minix, so he created his own free work alike. But he insisted that anyone who uses it and makes it their own also has to make their code alterations available to the public. On top of this was grafted applications made by hard core freedom-loving software programmers in the GNU project. This got the whole Linux ball rolling. Most applications are created by people who either want to create/customize something to make their life easier, or they have security and privacy concerns. Again, all of that is made available to all of us (because of the original license) to the point where we now have entire operating systems that are free and open.

Majority of people don't wanna hassle with terminal or drivers or software that isn't on pair with their logic/pro tools/photoshop/premiere just because this supposed freedom and all the benefits that came with it because most of the time is a two way highway. You can get amazing privacy and safety but shitty UI/UX and features for example, and the other way is also true. And for the linux, if we really stretch the viewpoint, android is basically a distro made by google (i'm not even gonna talk about all the diffderent distros by LG, samsung, HUAWEI, xiami etc) with literal spyware on it and the majority likes and uses it and that's it, not everybody is savy to install a custom rom on their device and at this point, is far worse to have data compromised on your phone than your computer anyways. Every SO has its strong points and its use, and to do your work sometimes you need to understand this and forget about this whole paranoid war of us vs them (and don't download cracked games or programs, that's a major security point hahahaha)

This isn't 1999 anymore. Most users won't experience a serious malware on their home PCs. Viruses target businesses these days. It's where the money is. With everything in the cloud, most home PC users don't even care if they get a cryptolocker trojan or a tech support scam popup. It's getting harder to convince people to use Linux, and using outdated arguments isn't helping.

Next problem of proprietary software is cloud usage or data center usage. Many companies kill possibility to start their apps on your servers (drop on promise solutions). This approach is very bad and all is about spying and assembly data. The bottom layer of cloud is Microsoft, Amazon or Google again. For example Atlassian, on promise solution ends to 2024 for Jira, Confluence and Bitbucket!!!

I think you are missing one thing. When you say "you can verify what the software does", people normally respond "I am not a programmer, so how can I verify?". The point is not that you can verify, the point is that since the software is open source, if it is popular, somebody must have verified.

I am still amused on how a normal person would even care about all this stuff on privacy when they themselves give on their cellphones accesso to almost every bit of information to any App they install, and even google letting them know their routine and activating all the telemetry options on the device. To me this feels like finding some paranoic person that have no clue on the matter and suddenly is spooked instead of explaining a standard user why this is bad. I just pictured a guy entering McDonnalds and claiming fast food is not good...

hey DT why is it almost all guys showing Linux installs only use VMs?everything worked famously in a VM for me. never do i see Linux going on an newer laptop or something and troubleshooting when it "just doesn't work" i tried POP OS and wifi problems abound. spent 2 days grinding for solutions and went back to windows as i would disconnect wifi after 10 min. being an HP i figured it would be working (the printers seem Linux friendly anyways) but i cannot figure out wifi issue. i did like the command line and learned a lot, just not how to fix my problem, haha Edit: I'mm not asking you to fix my problem for me. but how to even go about fixin things ourselves would be amazing. so many options. for a noob like me it is beyond overwhelming and A LOT of the "fixes" i found made things worse to the point i just reinstalled over and over. RTFM doesn't work when you have no clue what manual to Fk'n read lol. seems to ba an issue for a lot of people from what i am seeing. read more Ubuntu forums than i can mention.

Starts from basics first. Do not use full configured distributions, use Arch and learn step by step. After few weeks you can create exact YOUR system without any issues. You have very powerful advantage, you are speaking English, you can easily read anything. I tried to learn Czech users, and it is much more complicated.

most YT vids use a VM as the creator can use screen capture recording software to show what is happening on the screen. To record installing on bare metal, one would have to set up an external camera, and the best you could achieve would be an "over the shoulder" look at what was happening. You probably would NOT be able to read screen text and would not be able to read what was being typed. DT actually doesn't remove most of his "screw-ups" and that what originally drew me to watching his videos. There should not really be a difference between running something in a VM and bare metal- and normally if it is, it has to do with video card drivers. I would suggest searching for "linux HP " and see how others fixed the issues you were having. Sometimes, you might have to change Distros as one Distro may be more user-friendly with your newer hardware than another. Good Luck

Hey Merhaba DT , i tried to explain my friend about the importance of open source and free software, i asked her to use kdenlive for her youtube videos, she used it but she replied me like "as long as it works, i don't care if it is free software or not", so it seems too many people are like this, they do not care much about the free software and privacy in computers. My another friend told me, he wants other companies to use his information for capitalism and he will continue to use all of the proprietary softwares forever, seems like this is also another thinking perpective in the world, would you comment on this two occurances and how do you reply them back when you encountered them?
@littlepeon

freedom of choice also means the freedom to choose NOT to use something. You stated your facts, and your 2 friends stated back that they don't care, they want to use what they currently are using. Their loss, not yours..get over it and move on.
