The down strokes are on 1-2-3-4 with the upstrokes on the off beat between 1-2 first then 3-4 second. It's the off beat that make the rhythm work so well. I wouldn't know how to write it in musical notation but in simplified terms the off beat (upstroke) is closer to the 2 and 4 than the 1 and 3. Hope that helps. If you're trying to sing it at the same time that can also be quite difficult. In which case I find it best to perfect the rhythm of the guitar first then add the vocal once you've got the guitar part nailed. Otherwise you'll find yourself going round in circles never getting either part perfected. Cheers Martin
