To me he's a legend for his improvisational originality and writing. The melody, phrasing, harmony and lyrics of his songs are all as amazing as improvising behind his back.

I saw Jimi play live 3 times(Hunter College, Singer Bowl, and Lincoln Center), and I met him at a club one night. He was otherworldly! He was one of a kind, and he was only on top from 1967 to his death in 1970. He only did 3 albums in his life. He was a prophet, and Prince, and Stevie Ray were his disciples.

Great job guys, your face was priceless there kid! Hilariously appropriate, Jimi surprised you, imagine the folks born in 1930 at that time! Jimi was a cultural force. Played in backing bands for ppl like Little Richard and The Isley Brothers before being discovered in New York, taken to England and forming his band there. They had 3 studio albums, were a group from 1966-1970, and toured HUNDREDS of shows. Never stopped touring except to record an album. Jimi's first show back in the US was Monterey Pop where he burned the guitar at the end of Wild Thing (check that out!) Even though Jimi died after only 4 years as a superstar, he recorded A LOT of material. So much that they have released several re-mastered albums of old tapes, one of which being what his 4th album was going to be (First rays of the new rising sun). It was mostly finished, and Eddie Kramer, his original engineer, did a great job on all of these projects (there are really cool behind the scenes videos with him going through jimi's songs on the mixing board). There is so much great music from him, been listening to him since I was like 14 everyday, never gets old. Pure in the moment emotion in those songs. Rock on!

He was around through the early 60's as a session player for the Isley Brothers and Little Richard. But he was talked into doing a solo career. That career was from 1966 to his death in 1970. He had 3 studio albums and one live album. He also had 16 singles that most still get played on classic rock stations regularly.

Hendrix was no mere mortal,a rock god and genius, who bridged the gap, from blues, which later would evolve into metal🎸🎸🎸,Hendrix was a virtuoso 🎸,he influenced everyone who took up the Axe..,This is when he took the great rock group to school at the Monterey rock festival,he showed Pete Townsend who was boss,he played with his teeth ,and behind is back as way to show his complete power over the instrument,he died at 27,actually he was prolific,Are you experienced?,axis bold as love, and, electric ladyland was his main albums, all great ablbums,Jimi Hendrix Was a gifted musician but never arrogant,a bit shy in fact,I know this from biographies and documentaries of that era, like Paul McCartney and other great artists all appreciated his artistry..

This Monterey performance (his first real concert in the US as an unknown) was in June '67, he died in Sept. of '70. Went to London in late '66 and blew away Clapton, Beck, et. al. Yes, it's hard to get videos on YT to listen to, there are some live performances (no video) that are good. Purple Haze at Atlanta Pop is video and can be watched. Audio only check out I Don't Live Today at the LA forum in 1969. Glad to see the birth of another Hendrix fan!

Jimi died at age 27. Released 4 albums in his lifetime. Totally revolutionized the guitar. Playing with the teeth is an old blues guitar trick. So was playing behind the head. T-Bone Walker did it before Jimi I know.Jimis life story is fascinating. He was self-taught.

Next you should play his performance of "Wild Thing" from Monterey Pop Festival where he lights his guitar on fire. Give your son a good education on Hendrix; buy the albums Axis Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland. You'll never be sorry. I was lucky to have seen him when I was 14, in 1968. Hendrix played with other bands in the early 60's after he left the service, including the Isley Brothers, King Curtis and Little Richard. He became famous (over in England) in 1967 and played until his death in 1970 at age 27.

I totally enjoy watching young people experience Jimi Hendrix the first time especially a live performance like this one!! I haven't really scrolled through the comments but might I suggest if you're looking for a good live song by Jimi Hendrix would be his Woodstock performance of the national anthem Star-Spangled Banner!! IT IS EPIC!!! I'm going to look through some of your other reactions to see whether or not you actually did do that song but if you haven't I suggest you give it a shot you won't be disappointed!!

An education. Jimi could play with his teeth, over his head, behind his back, and between his legs effortlessly. He learned these skills at gigs he attended around Seattle, from other artists who were doing the same. Jimi played a standard Fender stratocaster guitar reversed and strung to play left handed. In so doing the stringing was reversed and the control knobs were in the wrong position. Jimi could play bass and acoustic guitar (6 and 12 string), in addition to all the forms of standard electric guitar, and he could play guitar right handed too but preferred left handed playing. He cut his teeth touring on the Chitlin' Circuit in the USA, playing backing for the likes of The Isley Brothers, Little Richard, and Ike and Tina Turner. Jimi was discovered by Chas Chandler, the bassist of The Animals, at the Cafe Wha' in Greenwich Village and brought over to the UK where he formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience with Noel Redding (bass) and Mitch Mitchell (drums). He recorded three albums, these being: Are You Experienced; Axis Bold as Love; and Electric Ladyland. Prince, SRV, and to some extent Kravitz were just his disciples. Jimi was doing what they did and more twenty years before them. Jimi was a disciple of Eric Clapton, and one of his conditions to come to the UK was that he meet Clapton. Chas had no problem with that because he knew Eric personally. Both Clapton and Hendrix were both self taught on guitar. To experience Jimi's guitar playing range you need to listen to The Watchtower. This is a Bob Dylan song that Jimi played a cover of. On hearing the cover Bob rang Jimi up and told him that this was now his song, and that his cover was the definitive version of the song. Bob never played The Watchtower on an acoustic guitar again. To see how good Jimi was you need to watch Jimi Hendrix, Johnny B Goode, Berkeley and Jimi Hendrix Lulu Show, Cream Tribute, Full Version (where Jimi has his guitar talk the words to Sunshine of Your Love). To see Jimi perform a slow and beautiful song try The Wind Cries Mary (Stockholm). This song written after a bust up with his then girlfriend Kathy Mary Etchingham. Other fantastic Hendrix tracks include: Purple Haze, Foxy Lady, Fire, Crosstown Traffic, Little Wing (instrumental) etc etc. If you want to experience a full Hendrix gig, there is one on You Tube in Stockholm in black and white. Here he starts out with Howlin' Wolfs Killing Floor, a favorite warm up song at many gigs. You'll note too that Jimi greets the draft dodgers, because he was against the Vietnam War. Is there a track that is little known on which Hendrix plays? Try There Ain't Nothin' Wrong With That, and listen how Jimi makes the guitar talk by making it wail out. The singer is Noel Redding, Jimi's bassist in The Experience. Again it's on You Tube. Was Jimi so good? Experienced by me on multiple occasions I can say personally that Jimi was the best performing artist on guitar that I have ever seen in my life. Beyond incredible. Simply phenomenal. Jimi was six blocks up the street from every other artist musically. Note how Jimi plays rhythm and melody both at THE SAME TIME! He died on 18th September 1970 aged 27 from an overdose of Vesperax, a very strong analgesic. Had he lived, with advances in guitars and guitar sound effect electronics, the sky would have been the limit for Jimi. He would have created sounds beyond anything ever known to man. Adored by other guitarists including Jeff Beck, Santana, BB King, Clapton and so many others. When Jimi died I wept. The greatest musical loss of a generation. Totally and utterly irreplaceable. Many have tried, and many have failed. There are many very good guitarists out there, but there is only one Jimi Hendrix. As Jack Bruce of Cream pointed out, Jimi was some sort of force of nature. Jimi was beyond special. Now you know why your dad and me are so very into this man. It is hard not to be into a genius. You think this was good? Ha, ha! Next play: Jimi Hendrix, Johnny B Goode, Berkeley. Prepare to be amazed at what a single man can do on electric guitar.

I loved seeing this lad enjoying this, being shocked by some of what Jimi was doing!! Ha. awesome Dad ,Son connection and choice of song to review. if you've not seen Jimi Hendrix do Machine Gun Live at the Filmore, get that DVD from JimiHendrix.com. also listen to song called "Midnight" its on the album "war hero's", or more recently The Album/CD "South Saturn Delta"...be ready for your mind to be blown,pup...Coz Jimi was and still is flipping amazing!! Imitated a ton of times, they'll only ever be just one and we got'um him for 4 yrs straight!! least we got that much. Play on Jimi. Oh BY the way there would be no Robin Trower or Stevie Ray Vaughan were it not for Jimi Hendrix. in my opinion and experience its sooo abundantly clear that they ripped Jimi off Big time. SRV used to dress up for Halloween as Hendrix.... I'm so over it. get your thing together! your own sound. Santana did it,Eric Clapton,Jeff Beck,Frank Zappa and a slew of other guitarist did!! My favorite Hendrix cover was All along the Watch Tower . The studio cut was so far ahead of it's time . He was never able to reproduce it live because the technology was just not there for live performances. This song was a Bob Dillian tune ,but it was Hendrix who brought it to life. There is quite a story on the recording of this tune which started in London and ended up at Electric Lady Land in New York. The quality of this track was fantastic and still holds its own today

The parts that I really liked were: -his reaction to Jimi playing with his teeth and saying "I wasn't ready for that"...nobody at Monterey was. Nobody in the world. Even today, with all outrageous things in pop music (thanks to Jimi too!) He can still shock a young man. Think what he did to teenagers' mind back then! This is the most appropriate and true reaction to Jimi. -the point where you said "I knew he was good, but I didn't think he was SO good". That was my reaction when I was 12 and saw "Rock me" from Monterey at the beginning of "A Film about Jimi Hendrix". I never listened to him before, but that saturday night of 2003 that dvd changed my life for ever. Also, I love the fact you and your dad are doing this kind of videos together, it is a really cool thing! Stay safe!

Jimi was great. I always wondered what he'd be playing nowadays if he didn't die back then. He's a legend for a reason...the man sure knew his way around a fretboard. Also, he was a consummate showman. He could show off sometimes, but he had the chops to back it up. If you would do more Hendrix reactions, that would be greatly appreciated. Here's another suggestion for you: Clutch - Electric Worry (I'm pretty sure I suggested another Clutch song in a reply to a comment somewhere too) (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZpxddOT3a-0dn0.html). Cheers!

This is actually a remake, and a darn amazing one it is. The 1965 original is by a Los Angeles garage band called The Leaves; it's not bad, go give it a listen if you get a chance.

Actually, it was a Joe South song before it was covered by The Leaves. Joe South also wrote Deep Purple's first hit, "Hush"

Have you thought about making a "Your suggestions/links here" type of video? Since your channel is creeping up on 5000 subscribers, it may be getting tough to keep track of everyone's suggestions in the comments section of videos. If you had a suggestions video, you could put a link in the description and maybe mention to the listeners that if they want to leave a suggestion, they can go to that link. I've seen a few other channels that use this method and it seems to work well for the most part (except some people still leave requests/suggestions in the comments section, but that's another issue haha!) Cheers!

Hey Mike! That’s a great Idea! But usually we when want to do certain artists like TOOL, we look back at the comments in the last TOOL video to see what the TOOL fans want. It would be more difficult in my eyes to do that if we had one video. Thanks for the idea though! -S

Fun Fact: Jimi was left handed, but played on a right hand side guitar without changing the strings.

Not Hendrix, but I'd recommend Guns N' Roses - Civil War. Might have to do live version of that as well.

I love the look of the kids realizing the quality of “boomer” music. How many guitarists can play with their teeth? Humbling, ain’t it?

Any tips on teaching you kids to get into music like yours? Mine is too young now (2), but it would be great if I could share the love of music with him the same way you do.

Huppy, I love your question. I started all 3 of my kids listening to the Beatles at 3 weeks old. Yes 3 weeks old !! It was the Beatles 1 album. Make it fun for the little one. Sing along with the songs. As time goes on introduce new bands even at a very young age. My kids loved The Who at age 4 or 5 also. They will catch on and love it. Also , I had them listen to a wide variety of music , Kenny Rogers , Harry Chapin, beastie boys , Barry Manilow , Pat Benatar and the most goes on and on. Just have fun with it. Keep us posted on how it goes !

@@fatherandsonreactions That's pretty much how I ended up with such a wide range of musical tastes, too. :-) Between the parents, grandparents, and an older stepsister, I was exposed to a *lot* of disparate musical influences when I was a grade-schooler in the 70s, and ended up absorbing everything from AC/DC to the Beatles, Chet Atkins and John Denver to the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd and Styx and Boston to Mike Oldfield and Tchaikovsky and the New Christy Minstrels. (And then as a teenager in the 80s, I returned the favor by turning Dad on to Rush and the Alan Parsons Project. :) )

Father and Son Reactions thanks a lot for your reply. The Beatles sound indeed a good option to start with, since most songs are catchy. Did you always introduced them to the hits, and as they grew older started introducing to the ones that take longer to understand, or did you mix from the beginning? My parents would put a full album, when I was a kid, they had good taste, but I think through repetition I caught on the songs with weaker hooks as well.
