Probably a case of the van driver sitting in lane 2 doing 46mph with the hgv driver tailgating him to try to get him to move into lane 1. Van driver then gets pissed off at being tailgated and starts dabbing his brakes to try to get the hgv to back off a little and the situation escalates from there. People who think it's their job to enforce speed limits by driving in the outer lanes doing 3 or 4 mph under the posted limit are tedious in the extreme but that still doesn't excuse the behaviour of the artic driver. Best thing to do is just to pull into lane 1 and let someone else get wound up by the behaviour of sanctimonious lane-hoggers.

I think raging like this endangers not only the people involved but other road users just trying to go about their day. Stupid. Pointless. Futile.

As a hgv driver myself I cannot tell how many miles I’ve had to endure selfish middle lane hogs that just WILL NOT move out of the middle lane. Although I don’t tailgate or try to intimidate it’s massively frustrating as many still drive in the middle lane when the inside lane is free. I’ve even seen them move over to the outside lane!! Why? I’ve often passed slowly on the inside lane when the steadfastly will not move over despite a flash of headlights to try to politely let them know I wish to pass.

Motorway is not a playground to have your lovers' tiff.

I think the van driver caused the hgv driver to lose it. We are all human. Van will have been driving like an arsehole. 40 mph in lane 2, and not allowing the hgv to overtake and do 50. Too many middle lane hogs around. If your not overtaking anything, then you should be in the left lane.

this video needs to be sent to the police, an accident waiting to happen, they both need points on their licenses or banning.

This happens to me on the same road every bloody time. As a HGV driver it frustrates the hell out of me that folk think they can just sit in the middle lane and lane log all the way to the end of the road works. Just move the hell over to the left lane when clear and safe to do so, that way I can continue my journey.

Something has obviously occurred between the two parties, whatever it was has got out of hand & both need to wind their necks in. All too often it will be an innocent 3rd party who pays the price.I do think that this stupid practise of brake checking should carry an automatic 6 month ban rising to 2yrs if a collision is caused, too much of it going on nowadays.

You can only speculate what caused this little kerfuffle but it looks like it has been going on for a while before it got past the camera vehicle. A coping strategy that i use more of now is if someone else does something to wind you up,try to keep calm then upload them to KZfaq. In this instance both drivers have now gone too far and just look silly and childish. P.S. For future reference i can not promise to always stay calm so just stay out of my way!

i blame the bellend that thinks 20+ miles of roadworks is a good idea, if the speed limit was 60mph that would decrease the chances of trucks tailgating thus less frustration, less stress. less accidents.. majority of the roadworks there only 1 small patch being worked on anyway

Getting sick of people hogging lanes through roadworks and doing way below the speed limit. The van is clearly playing games with the HGV and the HGV driver is getting agitated. The van driver is the main antagonist and should be banned. HGV driver also needs to evaluate just how much he/she stands to lose if they are going to allow idiots to get to them like that. Ive seen it before, dying to get home or make a delivery and time is tight. Its easy to just want to get passes whoever is playing games like this but the best course of action is just to pull back and not get involved. Easier said than done I know but the consequences of harming someone else because you become so fixated on the cause of the problem far outweigh making the delivery or getting home on time.

Time for a website to download our dashcams to the DVLA ,they get loads of money and the roads get a hell of a lot safer

Looking at what the van does I suspect that the truck was in lane 3 due to the actions of the van. The van was brake checking the truck and the truck was having to swerve out of the way.

I'd take both their licenses off them!

Umm, I do know that when I`m driving my coach through there it seems that HGV drivers just floor the pedal and carry on as usual. I`m sticking to the limit and they come barrelling past me.

The way I look at it is Pissed Off hard working HGV driver had enough with van drivers.

The driving standards in the UK on the whole are abysmal. The sad thing is most drivers think they are both good and safe, when in fact they are anything but. I think everyone should sit a safety retest every 5yrs and anyone who disagrees obviously doubts their own abilities.

It's 50mph roadworks with those specs cameras, here's what I think happened based on what occurs in these motorway works everywhere: Van probably braked to around 50mph in middle lane, truck has calibrated speedometer and didn't want to slow below it's max speed of 56mph (as they do), probably flashed high beam at the van or talgated out of frustration to speed it up. Van probably got irritated and brake checked the truck, causing it to go into lane 3 behind the camera car. Van keeps on antagonising the truck driver. Would loved to have seen what happened behind the camera car.

I had a HGV tailgate me in a 50 limit motorway roadworks, lane 2 & 3 both narrow, when lane 2 was clear I moved into lane 2 safely slowed, HGV passed me on the left with a surprised expression. When safe I moved back to lane 1. Job done.

Here is what I think. For some reason (which we can't see on camera) the HGV had to go into lane 3, this might have been to avoid a slower moving vehicle which the driver a) didn't notice in time or b) realised s/he wouldn't be able to avoid a collision c) both d) Other. The driver quickly moved back into the centre lane (probably a bit too soon and a bit too quickly) and had to slow rapidly to avoid the van - you can see the brake lights come on. It then looks like, judging by the amount of times the HGV's brake lights came on the van was continuously braking/speeding up and slowing down because he is (understandably) pissed off with the HGV driver (who had almost gone into the back of him). Being pissed off with another vehicle does not justify driving the way the van driver did. I believe the Lorry driver changed lanes to try and get away from the van driver...not necessarily to overtake it but to be able to have a larger gap between the HGV and the vehicle in front. Now. A bit of trivia (from a TV documentary I watched some years back). Although 75% of fatal accidents in the UK involve a HGV...only 25% of those are the HGV's fault.

The van sat in lane 2 for miles n miles at 50 mph , The truck with a calibrated speedo knows the vans only doing 45 - 46 and sat there flashing his lights and the got brake checked ( how am i doing so far ? ) , the truck then entered lane 3 and got hung out to dry by the van ........ the video then shows the rest

The hgv broke the law when they entered the 3rd lane. But at the end of the day they were both driving like idiots. Another day on the road.

I travelled on the M6, M60 M61 etc in the summer and it scared my no end, I am an experienced Driver but the drivers on that road need to loose their licence quickly.

The odd accidental move youve gotta just suck it up we all make mistakes but the vans just goading the hgv driver there with lots of deliberate blocks......would he try that against a typical 4dr saloon? No because he knows he can outrun that hgv so isnt scared of being stopped and having the crap beaten out of him by some nu job...... This type of antagonistic driving should be sent to police and an instant fine and points letter posted out no questions asked unless he appeals which he wouldnt......strange thinking by some of these drivers.....something very missing in their lives to do this.

HGV! No excuse to move 44t from lane to lane like that especially in road works and narrowed lanes. Considering they are both going at least as fast and faster at times than the guy videoing the incident I would have to presume they are both driving at the permitted limit.

Lot of people on here asking why the HGV is in lane three.... The tailgating, swerving across all three lanes, out of his mind with rage and slamming on the brakes do not seem to matter, they just want to know why he is in lane three. Incredible.

What do I think!!! Something has clearly gone on prior to the start of this video. BUT the lorry driver is so unprofessional and dangerous. The van driver is playing a very stupid idiotic game. If a Court was to see this, I’m fairly sure driving bans would be a certainty. For the HGV driver. If the DVSA Traffic Commissioner saw the video, he/she would be striped of there vocational licence. Did you report to HGV drivers transport office. ??? Driving in the ‘outside’ lane of a 3 or more lane carriageway is illegal, however the roadworks could indicate a change, BUT normally through roadworks the outside lane is 6’6’’ width max vehicles. So can’t say if the 3rd lane driving is illegal in this case. (Probably is).

Width restrictions apply on the outside lane in those temporary roadworks, the lorry should never have been in that lane

The worst aspect of driving is HGVs who refuse to slow from 60mph to 50mph in roadworks and drive right up the back of other vehicles. Complete wankers.

I think the HGV was forced in to lane 3 cause the van was brake checking it, hence when the HGV switches to each lane the van follows to continue with the brake checking

Two weeks ago i drove from Leigh in Lancashire to East Finchley North London and returned the same day, Never went over 60 MPH took a while but we all got home safe, What all drivers need to do is calm the f**k down and drive properly that way there would be less stress and fatalities on the roads. We have all got angry on the roads but these are killing machines that we control and like others say its just worth being the better person and proving your a competent safe driver by not retaliating to these washouts, they will get kalma at some point and feel sorry for them aswell 👍😊

See it regularly on the M6 through the road works, I have driven lorries for over 50 years, I’m amazed now how many lorry drivers (not trucks 😀) drive so close to each other, another one that winds me up is one lorry attempting to overtake another lorry for a mile or more on the motorway I always slow down a touch if another driver is attempting to overtake me and is not making good progress, it’s only a matter of seconds lost.

I think that most drivers follow the Highway Code in the Uk roads, small number of drivers take things personal on roads and that’s where the accidents happen. I wish that drivers would really take a moment and think that if they’re not in the right state of mind then they shouldn’t be driving at that moment. I genuinely believe it would make a big difference. Be safe and drive safe

When I drive through the countless 50mph roadworks on motorways and try to stick to the limit, I am constantly tailgated and overtaken by huge trucks, I reckon that's what triggered this incident.

Typical of roadworks with average speed cameras. Speed limit is 50, cars (and vans) do 50mph, trucks want to do 55-56mph, they end up tailgating cars. Cars sit in the middle lane, outside lane doing 50... truck wants past. Me personally, cameras or no cameras, what ever the speed limit.... if someone wants past, I move to the left and let them past. I assume both are professional drivers, and both appear to be driving irresponsibly.

Regardless of their disagreement, a vehicle of that size and weight should not be driven in that manner on the motorway. Cut their licence up.

This is why they introduced a 60mph speed limit where possible on roadworks.

HGV has more responsibility so should back off!

It's obvious the van has dawdled in lane 2,truck probably went to close and van began playing break check,and so it goes on,upshot the professional lowered himself to the level of a amateur,and we all sit in a queue for hours until the carnage has been cleared.

From that part of the footage, the lorry is breaking the law by being in lane 3 of a motorway, then getting up close behind the van is putting everyone in danger. The van then decides to taunt the lorry. In my view, both are to blame.

I think all lane hoggers are here to blame,they cause the traffic to move slower than they could, they don't keep to the left even if they can ,due to their behaviour it enrages others to do silly things. As an hgv driver with 40 years of experience my view is the high driver should be sacked and charged with dangerous driving, there is no excuse for any of his actions and trying to intimidate the van driver with his size. If I had witnessed this I would have telephoned surefrieght and complained and also submitted the video footage to the police. I think the lorry is naughty for entering lane 3 but, having experience motorway roadworks from an HGV point of view, cars and vans hog the middle lane through roadworks effectively blocking the motorway and causing unnecessary tailback further down the road. Although they may think their cruise control is set to 50mph it is actually much lower. HGV cruise control is far more accurate. These scenarios would occur much less if drivers kept left unless overtaking and didn't sit in lane 2 simply matching speed in lane 1.

HGV should never be in lane 3 and the white van looked to me like he was just trying to keep to the speed with the average speed speed cameras and the HGV wanted past. HGV' s fault very dangerous

Why is the van driver trying to stop the hgv from passing? All the van driver has to do is pick a lane and drive, don't worry about what the hgv or anyone else is doing unless they're going to hit them. If I'm in my car and someone is stopping me from passing like that, I'd get annoyed as well.

0:18 don't think the van driver liked being followed so closely, so decided to brake check. Lorry reacted by swerving lanes, which is wrong to do cos the van driver is looking for a reaction.

I hope the video was passed on to the police and that both drivers got long driving bans. It's not about how stupid they are being with each other - it's about all the innocent people around them whose lives they are endangering.

I really wish something would be done about HGV's staying on the limiter through 50mph sections and harassing other traffic. I'm not saying that's what happened here but you always see huge lorries travelling metres behind other vehicles, intimidating them through the road works.

I side with the HGV driver, they’re always stressed having to reach appointments, they have to deal with inconsiderate drivers , they’re lonely, they have to sit in waiting rooms for hours, they have to sit in traffic all day, they’re unhealthy and work long hours. So moments like this are the boiling point for them.

Both absolute walkers tbf. But, as a HGV driver myself, we're the professionals and we're meant to be patient & hold back, even when you get a tool wanting to play games with a vehicle probs weighing 20times more & would easily flatten that van. I've been a victim of tailgating by lorries in the 50mph limit through road works. I really don't think some lorry drivers understand that I WILL NOT drive over 50mph, no matter how close they drive up my arse. If your overtaking a car on the inside lane doing 49mph and in doing 50mph, it's gonna take a while. SORRY, NOT SORRY. probably the case of whats happened here. The van driver sitting in the middle lane overtaking someone then this lorry comes up behind him and sits dangerously on his tailgate. Then quite stupidly, they have taken it personally and decided I ain't getting out of his way now and decided to piss the lorry driver right off. Both complete idiots who could of caused a massive accident. Both should be charged with dangerous driving and have their licenses ripped up. I recently got a dash cam as I've recently passed test. In first month of driving having full knowledge of highway code. I've been shocked at the lack of respect seasoned drivers show for it. This footage scares the hell our of me. As a learner we only do theory for motorways. When you see this behaviour it questions everything.

My experience of lorries in 50mph average speed zones is a lot of them never do 50mph and are in a hurry to get past you. But so what. Just pull over and let them past. If they get a ticket it serves them right.

Report the lorry driver to their employer.

HGV spelt TWAT. HGV in lane 3 says it all. Van driver in lane 2 perfectly legal not speeding entitled to be there all day if he chooses. HGV throwing the lorry about dangerously endangering other road users pity no old bill about supposed to be a vocational driver should have licence revoked that's 40 tonnes plus of lethal weapon. No matter what someone else does on the road, you should always drive professionally at all times. Treat your vehicle like an aircraft and your the pilot in charge of 300 people and crew. If you drive professionally at all times, you get the chance to feel superior to a lot of road users. And never rush. Ever! You gain nothing and it stresses you out to the point of mental breakdown. I spent thirty years in accident repare fixing damaged cars, and then three years in the ambulance service. I go very slow with plenty of stopping distant. It's not nice seeing the mess crushed cars causes.

Because the van driver is actively holding up the artic (maybe due to a bit of road rage earlier) the truck driver used lane 3 to try and get past him, and lane one and lane 2 and back to one and so on and so on. Easy situation to get into. Usually ends with a bit of giving the finger with an added bit of shouting. Don't know who's at fault but the sooner it ends the better.

About 6 years A HGV on the m62 at Saddleworth pulled into lane 3 while we were over taking. Luckily for my boss who was an amazing driver with his great handling skills possibly saved mine and his life. And this was down to an inexperienced European driver who didn't give a sh-t about the UK Highway Code.

As a truck driver I cannot defend the truck driver, though the van driver had obviously wound him up, but he is the professional here and should know better.
