I get it, this is a three year old video at this point. I'm writing this for anybody that comes across this video from this point forward: This is not a good hi-hat mic comparison. The mics are positioned with the capsules at different distances from the plates, at different angles, and at different distances from the center point of the hats. The difference of 1/2" (roughly 1.7cm for those outside the US) in horizontal-plane placement will make a *drastic* difference in the sound, with the same microphone. The same can be said for angular displacement. What I'm saying is that this video provides z e r o accurate data on what microphone to buy.

I half agree. Mic placement of a cm distance will change the sound. This being said the author of the video worked hard to give a comparison using exact, identical hits. I found the video useful. :)

The F15 actually sounds pretty good in this comparison. It’s also fairly cheap on the used market. 👌

From what I heard Shure SM81 is #1 that pleases my ears, but it always depends on the genre of music we do. Thanks for a great video!

Agreed. Very crisp and brings out the full sound of the hi-hat, which is in a lot of the higher frequencies.

The SM81 sounds the fullest for small diaphragm compared to the dynamic and large diaphragm condensers

Agree in distance and capsules... I blieve for this KIND OF INTRUMENT. (hi Hat) are to close but any way AKG is the best one for this... ANd i Have to say I USE JUST SM81 (shure) in Hi hats now! But yes. looks like the AKG sounds better.... who knows

The problem with these tests is that you learn nothing about bleed of other elements of the kit, and off axis coloration.

For those who are familiar with the sound of Sabian AAX stage hats (played with 5A "Acorn" tip drumsticks) the choice will be SM57, if the concept is to capture the most natural sound.

a troeds Some are more modern sounding, with more air, your brain thinks this is better because young ears tend to like bassy, more airy sound more. And that’s the difference between, it’s not night and day tho.

AKG C451 and SM 57 but the AKG is a condenser mic, twice the price of the 57. Pity you didn't record the sound with the foot. Well, jazzmen don't mike their drums !
