I always appreciate watching reactions to Ren and "Hi Ren" from people who bring a certain perspective. Musicians, vocal coaches, people in the mental health care, etc. So I certainly appreciated your view as a musician. But I also appreciated that you very much mirrored my thoughts about this song, and you said it so beautifully "the guy might as well have been naked". I think it's what draws a lot of people in about this song. But it's not just the vulnerability of showing your feeling to a large audience. It's more than that, it's being able to show something that can be perceived as pretentious. The courage... this is takes bravery real fucking bravery.

Ren can't be pinned down to a specific genre. He's releasing a hip hop album so his recent work is primarily fitting that genre so he can keep the album cohesive, but as you go down the rabbit hole you'll find blues, rock, a strong reggae streak and videos like this that are almost plays rather than "songs". You WILL find more songs you like (I'm generally not even a rap fan but I like some of Ren's). I try to warn all reactors new to Ren, do NOT react to "Violet's Tale" as a standalone video. It's actually the 3rd piece in a trilogy. The trilogy is compiled into a single video called "The Tale of Jenny & Screech" that includes all three full-length videos in the order they're intended. In case you hadn't noticed, Ren had a lapel mic and the guitar was plugged in. This was a live performance. He's a big fan of doing his videos as continuous-shots and only cuts when absolutely necessary or artistically intentional. Some of his songs are recorded in the studio and then he'll do a continuous-shot video, but a lot are also recorded live like "The Tales of Jenny & Screech" (and Violet). I'm subbing to go there with you.

Great reaction I love watching first timers like you said you liked it better then you thought you would because to be honest I turned it off the first time when he started the high pitched notes and said this isn’t for me. I'm a musician who's been playing different kinds of music and venues since the 1960's, so Ren really caught my ear when I discovered him earlier this year. I thought Hi Ren would turn out to be a one-off viral sensation--until I checked out the rest of his catalogue! Man, was I wrong! His rabbit hole is deep and runs off in many different directions. I've got a favorite-artists list of about 15 bands and performers that I collected for six decades, and Ren (and his band, The Big Push) immediately found their place on it. The fact that he's completely independent makes him even more amazing.

Welcome to Ren. He has a vast catalog going back over a decade. Really has no genre. Just does whatever he wants because... It may have been said below, but Ren has Lyme disease. With proper and prompt treatment the effects can be mitigated. However, he was misdiagnosed for many years and prescribed medication that brought on other complications including other illnesses and psychosis. He just spent nearly a year in Calgary going through treatments to help ease the destruction that Lyme disease can do to those afflicted. However, as you delve in to his catalog his pain and not knowing if he were going to live or die has influenced his artistry. Hence- he just whatever kind of music he wants to do. 'I was created at the dawn of creation...' the eternal battle of the subconscious that mankind has been going through since our dawn of existence. I really enjoyed your reactions to this. A performance with substance that everyone understands because we've all faced the internal battle. Many Ren fans will tell you to go this way or that way down the rabbit hole. I suggest that you look up Ren and understand what he has gone through to make full sense of most of his songs. In a nutshell he was misdiagnosed for many many years and had went through all sorts of treatments and medications even to the point he was told he was crazy before being properly diagnosed with Lyme disease. If Lyme disease go untreated for years as Ren was , it causes all sorts of health issues, some very dangerous.

I am a new sub also. Loved your musical knowledge and your realization of his authenticity and vulnerability. He spent years in bed with this mystery illness. Lost his music career because of it. He was signed with Sony at 19 . He was 26 when he got diagnosed and recieved 2 stem cell transplants that brought him half way back. But he still has brain,immune, and neurological issues and daily pain. He can eat onlt about5 foods m, allergic to the rest. He is 33 now and wise, strong and empathic beyond his years. He is in Canada getting treatments 5 days a week with no promises. There is just so much good music here! Just dropped an acoustic version of Murderer which is awesome . Enjoy the ride!

I cried in the bathroom for 30 minutes before I could pull myself together to breakdown and comprehend what I just saw. By him showing us his 2 sides we all now have 2 sides- the person you were before hi ren and the person you are after hi ren. This isn’t a once and a lifetime, this is once in a thousand years. A little backstory on him. When he was young, he got Lyme disease. However, the doctors did not diagnose him with Lyme disease. They thought it was some kind of psychosis, so they prescribed him medicines to treat that. Of course, not having the psychosis and giving him those kinds of medications, it had a very bad negative effect on him. Then, when the medications had a negative effect, they diagnosed him with chronic fatigue. Then they started treating him for that. Meanwhile, the whole time the Lyme disease was destroying his brain and body. At the end of the song, when he says, “I stood in the flames that cremated my brain, and I did not once flinch or shake,“ that’s what he was referring to. Now he is getting proper treatment, but he had a long, hard road before he wrote this song. there are some videos out there of him talking about the hard times he’s going through while he was going through this illness.

This track really touched close to home for me personally, my own story is very close to his in regards to his health and the aftermath. His own description of this track and others Like Tale of Jenny, Tale of Screech and Tale of Violet as "Bardcore". Much like the Bards of Yore, a Storyteller, Performer and Keeper of Lore, Ren is a Modern Day Bard and with him arrives a new Musical Renaissance.

Buckle Up!!! Ren is incredible. out of his entire catalog of over 50 videos, there's only been a couple I didn't really like. Just a few that I didn't vibe with. The rest of the time I'm floored and amazed or brought to tears. He's a goosebump master. You'll love the journey and you definitely want to take it. You're only cheating yourself if you don't go down it. But hit it all. Some tracks I don't feel others have felt PROFOUNDLY, so you never know which ones are going to miss you until you listen. I feel so connected to Ren's music, but even more powerful and inspiring is him as a person. If you watch his video from when he hit 1,000,000 subscribers you truly get a sense of him.

You need to go down the Ren rabbit hole. He was also in a band called the big push and has lots of collaborations. Look for “Ren x “… (chinchilla, Eden Nash, etc). And then there’s his rap music He suffers from (initially misdiagnosed) Lymes disease Which cause some psychosis, which wasn’t helped by the medicines they were giving him for things, varying from manic depression to bipolar too. They were just pretty much using him for a guinea pig, and he actually had Lyme disease which does eat away at the myelin sheeting of the brain. And here’s your mind blower thought for the day he’s self taught my slowing down videos and watching how people did finger work and pick Work and he emulated that until he was good enough to speed it up to full speed . Why not to mine blower thoughts of the day? This is also a live one take with multiple camera angles they did three takes to get all the camera angles, but the audio is actually from one straight take Oh yeah… New subscriber

Yup subbed to watch ya'll tumble down the Ren rabbit hole. This song which I'm sure people have told you already was done live in one take. It took him 4 or 5 takes to get one they liked. Alot of his videos are one takes. Him and his boy Sam who films most of his videos love that style of video. They both love this German movie from 2015 called "Victoria" that's one of only a handful of one take movies ever made. It's one continuous take with no stopping for 2 hours and 18 minutes. So for that entire time nobody in the cast, cameramen or crew could screw up or they'd have to stop and start all over. Ren has song/video called "Money Game" and he said that was done also live and in one take but it took around 128 takes to get the video perfect with no screw ups. And Ren will release music videos for some of his songs that were recorded in a studio, but he'll most of the time do a live version or acoustic version if the song and usually the live versions are soooooooo much better. Ren shines in live performing. He started of busking in Brighton England. Just setting up his like cube speakers, a microphone, his guitar and he said the goal was to play and get that first person to stop, then for some reason he said more and more people will stop. You'll see some of his live busking videos where there's hundreds of people watching him. Ren calls his style "Bardcore" like the Bard's of the 16th and 17th centuries who would go around to taverns singing their stories. He has so many styles and plays almost every genre and he does them all soooo damn good. All he needs is a song that's heavy metal, country and German Polka and I think he would have every style of music covered haha

The hell that you have not been through is indescribable. This man has been there. Is still there now but getting help in, Canada. If you read through his first comment on the video it will give you some insight. It is a bit long but so worth the read if you want some context. Also I've seen some of his interviews so far I have found, Nox Hills interview with, Ren to be among the best of them. I'm sure I don't have to enplane who Nox is. I really hope you can do more of Ren's stuff. He plays multiple instruments, has that singing voice and the his rap flow is amazing. Not to mention his story telling ability. I could leave a few pages of thoughts, observations and explanations of my personal hell, The darkness those inner demons can lead you to. Don't go there by the way, it's not a nice place.
