What a brilliant portrayal of Claire. She conducts herself in a manner beyond medical/professional emotional detachment because clearly she cares a great deal about the subject's welfare. The look on her face, and her immediate reaction to the emergency shows how much she really does care about him as a person. Her extreme detachment allows her to proceed with the procedure which in reality, renders her very fearful for the outcome and its affect on him. Otherwise, she wouldn't do it. Of course, her own personal goals are involved, and that adds another layer of complexity to the dynamic. Very well acted.

This was done differently in a twilight zone episode with Robert Lansing and Marriett Hartly. In it Lansing came out of hibernation and aged on the trip, and Hartly went into hibernation. When he returned Lansing was old and she was still young. It was a tragic love story.

The first time someone looked at the horizon and wondered what lay beyond...we are explorers. Where do we go next? With the universe being as vast as it is, this will be the eternal question. The answer is and has always been bitter sweet many times. Still...we go. Nicely done film.

Nice atmosphere and use of retro style + the girls accent does something to me born in the late 60's. I believe in their emotions and relation, but I think it is a bit strange that after years of preparation for this journey, they are unable to control themselves at the last crucial moment. Makes me think about "Interstellar" and "Gattaca", films that made me cry.

Running toward her as the rocket blasted off was what he was dreaming not her . The reality was that he actually spent fifty years in hibernation while she lived her life and had two children . That is what he realized when he saw the photo at her bed side as he was beginning to tell her about the trip as he had promised her . The dream was his but the reality was hers .

Better ending than I expected.Good detail was showing the photos of her children so she did move on with her life. When his hand hit the window I cringed.I thought 'He woke up too soon. Now the window will not release and he will suffocate and starve in there". Much better he completed his mission and returned home so it was a happy ending. Mission completed

Nice story ! But just imagine, you are 30 and you travel in space for 5 years, but 50 years have passed on Earth - so you return and your five year old daughter is now 55, twenty years older than you....and your wife, also 30 when you left, is now 80 ! Would you go on such a voyage ? I would, but only if I didn't have a wife and kids. Even then, everybody you knew is either very old or deceased. There is an excellent SciFi novel "The Forever War", which has this phenomenon as its central core - by travelling so far into space and back, hundreds, then thousands of years pass by while the main character only ages a few years ! The whole planet Earth changes, socially, politically and geographically and the main character definitely does not like what he finds. I will tell no more, but it really is a fascinating story and highly recommended to anyone who likes intelligent SciFi stories. I cannot remember the author's name, but remember that he was a well known SciFi writer of the 1960's. 😘 P.S. I have looked the author up in the meantime - the novel was " The Forever War" by Joe Haldemann, written in 1974 (not the "Eternal War" as I originally stated - I have changed it above accordingly).

@@alicenunes4832 Thank you, Alice ! I have changed the title of the SciFi novel I recommended above, it was actually "The Forever War" by Joe Haldemann, written in 1974. I cannot recommend it more highly, it really brings the down side of space travel to life as one follows the main character through space and, more important, time as thousands of years pass by on Earth during his military career of twenty years or so. It is a fascinating and fantastic novel. 😘

For those who are saying that this is not science fiction, please note that cryogenic sleep, and long distance spacetravel are clearly well within the boundary of sci-fi and so is romantisising it. Otherwise sci-fi might as well be defined as a simple science documentary.

You refer to "The Long Morrow." I hated that episode because the young astronaut could have predicted his girlfriend would hibernate to stay young for his return, plus there was nothing really for him to gain from letting himself age on the lonely ship. He would have gone stark raving mad alone for 50 years without a heat source or food nor reading material nor KZfaq.

And then he stupidly insisted that she walk away forever because he was now 75, when she still wanted to be with him. And the way she only protested for a minute and walked away forever, simply because the love of her life had grown old for her in an act of selflessness and solidarity. She was his age but had simply hibernated sensibly. And then his old colleague telling him how much of a gentleman he was for having just done the "right thing." The Long Morrow was really about Serling's lust for the actress, but he was married and felt he was too old for her. The story was supposed to be about how he was a hero and a gentleman for not bothering the actress with his interest in her.

SPOILERS!!! So I actually really enjoyed this. In case you're feeling as lost as I did the first time i watched it, I'll give a quick explanation. The two main characters have a romantic connection and are both involved in the same field of work. The girl has dreamed of going on an extensive exploration since she was young, but when the opportunity comes, her partner is chosen over her. On the day he is supposed to leave, she leaves his bed without saying a word to him. He takes this as her being upset and jealous and has a rough time going through the procedure. She explains that she did not leave because she was jealous, but because she was worried that he wouldn't stay if she asked him to. He goes under and his last conscious thoughts are his fantasy of running to her away from the rocket and growing old with her. He blasts off and returns 50 years later to tell her all about it. I thought it was pretty cute (albeit profound) and I'm feeling pretty single. Wish my partner would put me under and send me away for 50 years. (Get you a man like that ladies)

Reminds me of an old Twilight zone. He was going in SA and she was staying on Earth. On the way back he did not place himself in SA, so he would be old too. She went into SA just after he left so she would be young with him when he came back.

I thought it was neat how there were a couple of references to Apollo. For one he's being launched in a Saturn V rocket and secondly when he's being put to sleep he's wearing the Apollo 13 mission patch. That I found to be particularly interesting because I thought that maybe it has a negative connotation. It was the Apollo mission that was almost a disaster.

Nice movie that gives room for explanations. My understanding is based on Einstein's theory of relativity that time is running slower in space based on a rocket's very high speed in conjunction with gravity. In addition, Joseph is in cryo-hibernation what keeps "fresh":) Therefore 50 years on Earth are not equally for Joseph's time in space and his real aging. He returned young(er), but his girlfriend is from Earth's prospective now really 50 years older, and now be dying... That is the tragic for astronauts on long-term missions that when they return to Earth their relatives and friends might be dead. The 2nd story part about the potential self injection, the hand in the hibernation chamber and the scene outside the rocket is part of an "imagined" 2nd choice and should make the movie more dramatic. This works very well because the viewer is intensively thinking about it after viewing the movie.

I feel the 'remembered' sequences confuse the plot line too much. I like what was attempted, but not the way it was done. I expected the man to return very old because he self-administered the hibernation reversal drug - only to find the girl too young because she'd decided to hibernate on Earth until he returned. Instead I was neither surprised, nor correct, just confused.

Such emotionally vulnerable people so close to such a mission? Sci-Fi chick-flic

People aren't robots. Astronauts have stress right before they go up. They have families and friends they have to say good bye to and know there could be an accident and not return. They miss family events etc. The video was a bit melodramatic though.

Direct rip from famous twilight zone story. Guy goes into suspended animation and leaves behind his love. He returns and is very old because he left animation. His superiors tell him that with advances they were able to journey to the planet he went to BEFORE he even got there and found nothing. His love is waiting for him but she was put into suspended animation and she is still young while he is old. His superior wonders what it must have been like to be alone for so long.

These video calls between the two are the last of what remains of their presence. Currently investigators are trying to find their whereabouts. Do you know where Steven Clark and Carly Smith are? According to investigators the following footage may be their last...

I don't get it. Who was the man running towards her, while the rocket took off? The man in the rocket seemed not to be in hibernation, but after a while he did. I was thinking she gave him not enough of whatever was in the syringe. I thought he would wake up after launch, and he would spend 50 years alone in that rocket (when there's enough food that is...).
