There were many caves before the Army built the dam and flooded everything. There was a whole town called Jefferson. They forced people out, burned their homes, businesses, church, and bulldozed it all. When the US Army Corps of Engineers decided to construct a dam and create Percy Priest lake the small town of Jefferson was directly in the path of the backwaters. It was projected to be inundated. So, the town was declared eminent domain. All of the buildings were burned down and bulldozed. 160 years of history, gone.

Originally the dam was going to be built farther down the Stones Rivier. That would have put the lake in the middle of Donelson. All the lower end of McGavock Pike and Em Hill Pike would be at the bottom of the lake and I'd of grown-up on lake-front property. What I heard was that soils samples of the area taken by the Corps of Engineers lead the geologist people to believe the soil was of the wrong type and would not hold water.
