Hidden defects of the engine lubrication system under the glass

👌We had an idea, to observe how the camshaft lubrication system works, under real conditions in a car
For this purpose, we selected an Opel Astra G car with a Z16XEP engine.
We took an old valve cover, cut off the top part, and stuck organic glass on top of it
To better observe the camshaft operation and oil movement in the upper part of the cylinder head, we decided to install LED lighting.
To do this, we used LED strips, adhesive, and wires.
It took us a day and a half to make this cover, but I think it will be interesting and worth it

It's because that camshaft is spinning in the same direction, flinging the oil downwards instead of up at the plastic. Still getting same lubrication though.

I think you got the winning answer. I work on designing diesel overhead components and I can tell you with confidence, they would not design the exhaust cam to get less lube, if anything they most often get better oil and coolant flow.

Why wouldnt it fling the oil in all directions?
@JohnChuprun
@JohnChuprun 9 ай бұрын
@@mpj59 It is applied from one side so it will fling it immediately, about 90-120 degrees from where it was applied.

Some motorcycles have clear engine side covers. I love the look though, if I was into modding cars I would make this a permanent fixture

Yes! Can't wait to make this as a diagnostic cover for both my project vehicles. Especially when you feel like the oil pump isn't flowing.

My only guess would be if the exhaust cam has a load bearing device on it, such as a vacuum pump. We don't have Opels in the US, so I am unfamiliar with the exact operation of this engine. Some one had mentioned that the cam was spinning the same way, and consequently flinging oil downwards. I don't think that is valid unless the oil galley is in a different location.

This is very useful to understand how the oil flows in the valve cover. Great video!

This can be helpful to find water leak, i have mayo only in this part of the engine where the oil we see in the video, no mayo on the oil pan, chain, oil filter, crankshaft, only in this upper part of the engine my next step is getting 12bolts out then i see if the headcasket is blown.

I saw the short and was like "hm that engine looks familiar" then you said Z16XEP yep, thats the same engine as my Grandmother's Meriva. That thing has some pretty good pull in the 4-6,5k RPM range, at least for the fact that its a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder from 2009 (in our case). 105hp, fucking insane in my opinion. Now imagine if you turbo'd this engine, wouldnt that be insane? It might mess with the twinport system, idk tho

Modern engineers have spoiled us, 105 HP from a typical na 4 cylinder is significantly higher now

А разве не на выпускной меньше? Выпускной коллектор находится впереди по ходу движения. Или я чего-то не понимаю? Тогда всё было бы логично. Выпуск греется сильнее, соответственно масло помогает его охлаждать.

Did you know that a vehicle in motion (as typically found in their natural habitat) tends to blow heat from the front to the rear through and around the engine and cooling system? Was the engine up to full temperature? Was there proper airflow around the engine and radiator? How much can you really tell from a thermal camera and such if the engine isn't put under full driving conditions? Edit: Oil viscosity changes depending on the temperature. The exhaust side tends to run hotter than the intake side.. Think about it for a minute. Maybe just maybe the engineers designed the engine to run best when actually warmed up to temperature and driving down the road.
@opelservicekyiv

It even takes place, maybe the engineers designed it that way, taking into account all these calculations. Thank you.

@@opelservicekyiv Still a very interesting and revealing experiment you've done there, no doubt. But yeah it would be neat to see this experiment repeated with the car driving on rollers and with a big shop fan in front of the vehicle to simulate road driving conditions.

The oil doesn’t look new , perhaps a bit of oil restriction? What was the oil viscosity? I can imagine if done with 0w20 in and engine that calls for it the results may be different. I run 0w20 in my truck engine and with 282km on the clock I have no issues with VVT-I or oil burning. 7500km intervals oil change.

Exhaust valves are hotter, i guess letting it get more oil means it will be cooled by that additional oil.

Maybe there is more presure build up on that side and prevents the oil to rise up properly. That is easy to test i think just leave the oil cap open.
