BIG E TRAIN SHOW 2013 WEEKEND - PART I
January 26th, 2013: Late January in the greater Northeast means one thing: the biggest railroading show on the east coast. Railroad enthusiasts from far and wide from all walks of life converge on south central Massachusetts on the last weekend in January to take part in the spending spree at the Amherst Railway Society's Railroad Hobby Show, held every year at the Eastern States Exposition (Big E) fairgrounds in West Springfield, Massachusetts.
BUT before anyone opened their wallets and emptied their bank accounts, there was plenty of railfanning to be done before the festivities began. While many opted to start their day in the New England railfan mecca of Palmer, I chose to start the weekend trackside at West Springfield proper. What was originally thought of to be only a couple of guys turned out to be a monstrous gathering of the foam, and the railroad upped the ante to compensate.
The rails of the old Boston & Albany, now CSX's Berkshire Subdivision, are an interesting beast. With freight schedules changing just as fast as the New England weather, it's oftentimes anyone's guess how many trains can be expected to roll in daylight, especially during the shorter windows of time during these cold Winter months. Nonetheless, CSX put on quite a show over the B&A this morning, sending train after train past the cameras of the ever-delighted railfans present to take all of the action in. A great start to the weekend? I'd definitely say so.
As you can see I wasn't the only one out here that day, so take the time to take a look into some of the other railfans work from this morning, they were a fun bunch of dudes to fan with that morning!

No worries dude, it was a awhile before I let any of this material see the light of day too lol. The B&A's my baby, always has been and always will be. May not have all the trains in the world or get the coolest power imaginable, but it's where I started and it's where I'll always come back to no matter where I am.

Yeah that's my favorite part of the whole thing, once I saw that play out I realized I had just struck comedy gold. "Such a shame" that there was no way to edit it out hehe.

Thanks a lot, I'm doing what I can with what I've got. Eventually I'd like to get a dual-mic external audio setup together but until then the stock mic on my temporary HG20 camcorder will have to do.

Thanks! And agreed, it's nice to find a little bit of diversity among the common power 500-series AC4400CW regulars that currently dominate the manifest trains on this line. Fouled or not, it's still out of the ordinary.

Yup, it was the first time in a while where something actually got lined through that magical first 10 minutes of light, hopefully I won't have to wait a few more years for the planets to align for a lighting event like that to happen again lol. The whole weekend was completely couldless, the last thing I was expecting during a Central New England Winter.

I'll do my best, one of my resolutions for the new year WILL in fact be better commitment to the whole KZfaq thing. If I can upload one or two a month it'd be a start. It's mostly writing and recording the voiceover that takes the most time (recording is without a doubt the most frustrating part of the process), then editing will usually take a couple days and then exporting/optimizing for KZfaq takes another day seeing as the process is so involved to fit a long video with a massive file size into a package small enough for KZfaq to handle and have it still look good all at the same time. I've got so much stuff though yet to upload, SO much, and not just from the Northeast either.

Sadly I won't be, it's not in the cards this year, but I'm making sure to make next year twice as good to make up for this year's loss. Everybody's still congregating at the crossings this year, well, in about 6 hours heh

Currently I shoot a Canon HG20, it's not what I'd be shooting ideally but for a little in-between purchases camera it gets the job done pretty well.

Not a knock on your video, but....."Dump trucks, dump trucks, and......more dump trucks" The B&A was a lot more interesting 35 years ago....eclectic, mixed bag, "dog's breakfast" lashups....with Cabooses.....know what they are? also assigned regular pushers on the hill....until July, 1982, anyway. Mostly SD40 and -2's, Occasionally SD45's or 6 axle GE's...U33C's, C30-7's. And "clean" rolling stock.
