In this video I look at Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights. Nobody painted Hell quite like Bosch. What we think of as Hell, and certainly what Bosch thought of as Hell is not based on the bible. What we think of as hell comes from later mistranslations and medieval art. What hell is or like, or whether it exists in the bible at all is widely disputed even within modern Christianity.
The Garden of Earthly Delights was the most popular video(s) voted on by viewers. I am still taking suggestions, so please put them on the comments of my video "what is your favourite work of art?"
There are no records to tell us what Bosch or his contemporaries were thinking. There are so many theories out there, some more outlandish than others.
I have sifted through most of them, and from a process of elimination, come up with what I think is a pretty good idea. I have also come up with several theories I haven’t seen before.
Bosch’s images are so ambiguous and their meaning so elusive, that they cannot be addressed by iconography alone. This is an attempt to look at as much evidence as possible, to come up with some form of meaning. Even so, there are still multiple interpretations.
I have based my research around the Bible, Medieval history, infrared scans, art history papers, books and historical documents. But in the end it is still my opinion. If you have an opinion, then why not put it in the comments, and keep the dialogue going?
I started "Great Art Explained" during lockdown. My aim is to make videos which focus on one great artwork. I want to present art in a jargon free, entertaining, clear way with no gimmicks. Subscribe and click the bell icon to get more arts content.

I’ve been looking for this channel all my life! Thank you! Your videos are brilliant. I love learning about art. I have a question that is not meant to be offensive in any way, shape or form so please forgive me. Here goes: are the explanations of these works of art (yours and others) based on what the artist has said (symbolism, use of color, technique etc.) or are they purely the opinion of the critic? I’m guessing a combination of both - based on your knowledge of art history. Thank you for any response!

Hi Lorraine - they are a mixture - some of the paintings I know extremely well. I usually read two or three books about each painting before making the video. Watch films and read academic papers. In most cases, there are records. In many cases it’s guess work which is why I stress it is my opinion, not the definitive answer. Here’s a good example: about 10’years ago they found a record of the GOED being in the possession of Henry III. The fact it was privately owned rather than by a church changed how people viewed the painting. So I am always trying to find new info to expand the story. So yes, it’s a combination of knowledge, history, science and opinion! Thanks 🙏

@Projekt KobraTV is not the only game in town anymore. KZfaq and streaming services of all descriptions means we can watch what we like when we like. We can take our interests from the most basic level to university quality. And we are not restricted by programmers likes and dislikes. Also... if you live in the UK, ditching the TV means you save a lot of money that you would otherwise have to spend on a TV license. I don't, and never will, have a Television ever again

Art is perspective and can only be. Even if an artist explains their heart out you would still never grasp what they felt. So many people would say what their schooling tells them to say. Great art.. Yes many are beautiful but still its only beautiful in the eye of the beholder. What you going to change their taste according to what others think? No. So many many will argue and say it has to perfect. But in this world... There is no such thing. Pareidolia at best in a feeling of environment passed on. Why your favorite color is why your favorite color.. Dont ever compare ones art to the world's view. They don't matter. Only when you seek profit over pleasure does their view matters..

I have enjoyed this painting ever since I first saw it in an art book when I was about 15. So 68 years ago. This is the first time I have ever come across a detailed discussion of it.

I spent a good hour viewing Bosch's " The Last Judgment" while at Bruges Museum. Stunning picture. Mind blowing that it was painted over 500 years ago. Also found it incredible theTriptych wasn't covered or behind glass or any protection. I find his work just mesmerising.

Yes!!! My hero. I actually live in Den Bosch (aka 's Hertogenbosch) , the Dutch city from which this painter got his name. His work is utterly fantastic.

@@GreatArtExplained my only thought was - is this really 'propaganda?' given a few things. Firstly, the whole setting of the original painting was that it would only be seen by a few rich, influential or priveleged people. Not sure it had the mass exposure and the target audience of as many people as possible to be called propaganda. But further, religion back then was less something separate in the way we think of it today, it was more of a way of life, or at least a reflection of life. It simply *was*. People had their doubts, they had their varying spectrum of belief from abelief to true believer, to a more sophisticated philosophical mindset. I think to call it propaganda is to miss the point. This is a challenging mirror held up to humanity, and the light has simply been warped so that we are starting back at ourselves in the narrative world (as you mentioned, we are the people in groups chattering and whispering away to each other). I'm just not sure it's *pushing* a narrative like propaganda does. It's also not exactly a comfortable story to be telling somebody. If you were trying to convince someone to be a Christian using this painting, it would be a hard sell!

@@blumousey Great comment, thanks. There's a lot I can't really fit in to this format, for example, it could have been both a conversation piece AND a religious triptych. One interesting thing though, was that Henry III was reported as not particularly religious. But, like you say, people just were religious, it was part of every day life. Re: propaganda - maybe a strong word, but the reformation was just around the corner, and it didn't just start with Luther. There were many radical thinkers at the time, and Bosch would have known about this, being in the brotherhood. Bosch was extremely religious and I do think the GOED was one of Bosch's oeuvre and an expression of his propagating his faith. Bosch's vision of Hell and damnation is not a comfortable way to sell christianity, but was pretty standard at the time. Just my opinion though, thanks so much for watching!

@@GreatArtExplained Thanks for your reply, I see your point, the painting definitely has a evangelist slant to it - I suppose one of the reasons it is so venerated is because you can look at it from all of these different angles simultaneously. I forgot to mention in my previous comment how much I love your channel - have spread the word to many as it's just brilliant. Please keep going! If I might be so cheeky as to make a suggestion - I would love to see your take on Dali's Persistence of memory, compared/contrasted with the disintegration of the persistence of memory. If you ever want to cover a less 'world-famous' artist, I would love your take on the work of Roberto Ferri - a baroque revivalist full of grotesque imagery, you'd love him.

The graphic of the triptych being opened is so, so visually informative! I was missing so much of the drama/theatricality of the work without being able to visualize the kinetic aspect, which now seems so integral to the work and the medium in general!!! I remember being enthralled by this painting when I first saw it at the Prado in 2017. Despite staring at it for so long, I couldn’t quite distill all the emotions it stirred up in me. I bought the poster at the gift shop but the image was shrunk too small to appreciate the details.. and the details were everything. I am 46 this year, yet I still remember seeing this as a picture of this piece in an art book in High School age 15. His name and this piece have stuck with me all these years. It is cause of this piece, I looked deeper at old masterworks, not just Heavy Metal magazines and Comics I was consuming as art at that age.

I was introduced to this painting when | was a teenager. My friend, who is a great artist, painted his electric guitar with scenes from the right hand side panel. It looked like the craziest "heavy metal" guitar I've ever seen. I look forward to part two of this. Cheers.

Hieronymus Bosch has been my favourite artist for nearly half a century. After him was Peter Brugel the elder, then came Thomas Cole( the founder of the Hudson River school) then Peter Paul Rubens, Francois Boucher, and Fragonard. As an artist myself, I drew the paintings of all of the above mentioned artists. But Bosch was always my favourite.

There's a Bosch triptych in my country's main ancient art museum. It's stunning. Bosch has always fascinated me, because he seemed to be painting both his dreams and his nightmares at the same time and in the same canvas - sometimes even the same scene within a canvas. I'm just sorry we can't examine the work with our own eyes too close, for obvious safety reasons. The texture of the strokes of paint makes everything so palpable and real, almost as if we have a window to the artist's state of mind. The detail for the size of his works is just mind-blowing.

This piece is in a massive Art book that I've had since I was 6. I remember this piece being my favourite. There was so much detail - so much happening - storytelling - and I remember my parents explaining to me that each section represented Eden > Earth > Hell. It's great to see a video on it in such depth like this. I had no idea about the monochrome painting when the panels are closed!

Amazing work. It practically requires time travel to understand his intentions and the way people would have received it. Like his contemporaries, nothing about this painting is accidental or without significant planning. It must have been shocking for many viewers to see those panels opened for the first time. A sudden explosion of both color and sex. I picture a room full of elites gasping and blushing at the assault on their senses and sensibilities. Wish I could go back and be a fly on the wall.

Thanx so much for clearing up the timeframe this was made in. I'd heard it was made in the renaissance but whenever I would look at it I'd always imagine medieval times. Something about the masses of people and the images reminded me of old etchings I've seen.

As a hobbyist videographer for several years now, I can appreciate the work put into this production, and all the more so because I've recently put together a similar commentary that pales in comparison to yours. In contrast to your work, I intentionally approached this painting without any prior study so as to embrace it with fresh eyes. As you implied, the piece is bursting at the seams with sin. The connections you made in this art simply floors me. My heart gushes over with the same degree of indulgence revealed in the garden, it seems ridiculous to even try to be coherent in this moment here and now, not to mention try to complement your perspective. However, I would like to make some suggestions in private that may help to improve upon some of the technical aspects of your presentation. I absolutely love your comment about there being no mention of a fiery hell in the Bible. Many Christians sadly believe that those who die without Christ will burn for eternity being poked in the bum by demons. While simultaneously confessing that only those who believe in Christ and obey him will know eternal life. On the other side there are Christians who sadly believe that their dead relatives are in some kind of heavenly realm in the clouds “looking down on me”, whereas the Bible actually says the dead are either dead or resting in Heaven but either way sleeping awaiting the day of the Lord.

Not like the fear is bad, it's the base of some of the greatest creations of art i ever saw, i personally thank the religion contribution to the art and creativity in the human kind, in times when life was sex and food the abstract thinking emerged by the fear of the unknown and questioning the meaning of life, it opened the door for art in the early stages of humans existence, even being something so unnecessary to life beings.

This is possibly my most favourite work of art of all time. Bosch showed such authentic imagination, especially given the contemporaries of his time. I would also say that even in the secular world today, this painting is of so much relevance.
