High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease. What causes high blood pressure? High blood pressure usually develops over time. It can happen because of unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as not getting enough regular physical activity. Certain health conditions, such as diabetes and having obesity, can also increase the risk for developing high blood pressure.

Thanks Doc. This is what needs to be on the news and informing people. These lifestyle changes will actually impact people on an individual level and effect meaningful changes. It’s unfortunate that most will go about their lives with no idea that they are causing harm to themselves. It’s no rocket science when you look at why certain demographics suffer from hypertension more than others

This is just not true.! While poor nutrition can lead to poor health, to say that poor nutrition is usually the cause of disease, is ridiculous. There a4e thousands of diseases that have nothing to do with nutrition. If you don't know what you're talking about, it's better to not say anything at all.

I'm 73 and have been 100% vegetarian for 50 years. A1C is 5.6. My blood pressure had been getting to the 130s and 140s and spiking to the 150s and low 160s at the doctor's office. I started taking 1/4 teaspoon of beetroot powder every morning. It lowered the BP at first but it was too erratic. After about 6 weeks it stabilized. We have also gotten a potassium salt. Now we use both it and salt. I also take 99 mg of potassium with magnesium every night. I think it was a good adjunct to the beetroot powder. Now the BP is always in the 120s over the 70s. The diastolic has always been good.

Great video . You should also talk about the role daily exercise plays in helping the body use up the added sugars and reduce the chance of getting many diseases. I’m pretty sure that eating a bunch of sugars then sitting on the couch for 6 hours VS immediately going to the gym to train for 1.5 hours is a totally different story.

This is excellent information. Both of my parents are on Blood pressure medication. Their doctor told them that they need to take blood pressure medicine because as they age they are vulnerable to strokes. Let’s just is the worst thing they agreed to do. The side effects are so bad, it’s creating so many health problems for them. They don’t eat process foods, they cook and eat real food. They agreed to the medication out of fear.

I have had hypertension my whole adult life though I have been at a healthy weight and eat reasonably healthy diet. My mother had hypertension, so it seemed it was hereditary. I am now 71 years old but back when I was in my mid-20s I would jog about 20 miles a week at a 7 minute per mile pace. Not exactly world class but not terrible. Then with no other options to lower my BP, I went on to blood pressure medication. My jogging speed fell to 9 minutes per mile literally overnight. Still, I figured it was better to be a slightly less athletic guy with one less health risk rather than a more athletic guy with a significant health risk.

Thanks for shedding light on this. One of the issues faced by patients when faced especially with resistant hypertension is that GP's often circle in and out a variety of medications in the hope that their BP can be brought under control. Often there can be underlying reasons for elevated BP e.g as in my case Primary Aldosteronism. It's my belief that many strugging to control their BP may well be somewhere along the road to full blown PA. As you will know, PA is commonly badly diagnosed and still we wait for an adequate drug to STOP rather than BLOCK excess Aldosterone secretion. DASH eating plan will offer substantial benefit by balancing and or improving your K / Na ratio - a plan suitable for most with BP issues.

@@paulkabrna345 Its about health. And there in one of the BIGGEST problems in health, Type 2 diabetes. Which is caused by eating carbohydrates. IT IS NOT HEREDITARY. It is a lifestyle choice. Caused by the Randal Cycle. The Randal Cycle discovered in 1963 by Dr Randal is the cause of type 2 diabetes. In short, you cant use both fat and sugar as fuel. Only one of them. If you have one already in the cell producing energy, the other is locked out. This is what causes the so called “insulin resistance”. But it isn’t insulin resistance, its the activation of the Randal Cycle. Type 2 diabetes can be cured by either eating high carb and no fat, or high fat and no carbs. But you can not live without fat. And there isnt a single carb you need to eat. You can live carb free for a very long life. Its been 5 years so far for me. Carbonongrata. Gave them up for fat. I do not eat ANY plant material at all. Diabetes cured. RCC reversed. Passing kidney stones one a month for two years, gone. Hell, I’ve even begun growing hair back where i forgot I had hair. Even my bald spot as been filling in. Carnivore is the PERFECT human diet.

I get higher blood pressure measured in the doctor's office than I get measuring at home. This makes my doctor want to prescribe more blood pressure medication. I ended up with an argument with the doctor this checkup because I'd refused to take his additional medication to lower blood pressure because my bp is already normal at home. I admit my pressure increases when I'm under stress though, but dumping more medication on me doesn't seem the answer. I'd prefer not to be fainting & dizzy (as the product insert described could be a side effect). So are there any suggestions about how to avoid white coat syndrome, which has only gotten worse when I end up arguing with the doctor. I am thinking maybe should find a new doctor? - I'm trying to lose weight (down 15 pounds). Cutting out sugar is an ongoing struggle.

Hi, Dr. Mike. Thank you for such an informative video. Question: how much time should you wait after using your Albuterol inhaler before having your BP checked? I needed to use my inhaler about 40 to 45 minutes before BP was checked by the nurse for an appointment and the top # was 20 points higher than usual. When I explained that I just used my inhaler the nurse said "that would do it". I was also told by another doctor years ago that nebulizer use can temporarily raise your heart rate. I appreciate your feedback.

I decided to cut the pills in half even then the diastolic was dropping below 60mmHg. I can't stand the dizzyness when I stand so I stopped the lisinopril. I almost fell over recently. I had 2 BP monitors both give similar reading. Average is 117/65 without the ace inhibitor.

If over 160/80 doing cardio may bring on a heart attack. If it sits around 140/ 80 and is stable try turmeric it can lower BP without meds. A tea or supplements or in food may help. If gets high often low dose ACE inhibitors help really well. 1.5mg is the lowest in very safe. Just keeps the heart healthy and relaxes the arteries a little more. Worth checking with your doctor if worried.

I'm disappointed Doc didn't mention exercise, lots of water and a good sleep as ways to prevent high blood pressure

There is so much processed food, and so much we are addicted to. Did this addiction occur by accident? I don't think so. You have to exercise tremendous self control to not eat, or minimally consume these foods. I have eliminated 75% of them, but it was not easy. Processed foods are all around us and are slickly promoted each and every hour of every day...sadly.

4700mg K and this will help. Challenges ahead to hit these targets. Cronometer will help.
