High Boost Turbo Miata DYNO : GTX2860r 20+psi loud spool!!

Andy takes the turbo Miata to the dyno with a plan to make 400whp or bust. He really wants to win the next time he raced the LS7 powered FD Rx7. Along the way he drives by downtown Louisville, see's a Ford Mustang hammer on it next to him for no apparent reason (that's what Mustangs do?), gives a tour of the old street racing spot, and then hits the dyno for multiple runs and tuning.

Man those new mustangs are pretty sweet. I have a 2000 nb miata, and I just sold my 2017 2ss M6 Camaro, i'd almost like to get a new A10 5.0 Mustang, they sound so good with long tubes and they're Pretty fucking quick, no denying it. they're holding it down out there. Probably going to hold off for a year or so though to get some other shit going, I've been wanting to turbo my miata with good parts, which i expect to come out of pocket around 10 grand once everything's said and done. that'll be alot easier without a $500.00 camaro payment every month lol.

Yea honestly I haven't been a mustang guy ever but the new ones are nice. They look good and sound good and the engine is also very good.

Love your setup man! Question: I think you have a the hks ssqv bov, correct? If so, how heavy is the spring you have in it, if you know. Cause I want mine to sound like that but I'm thinking different spring rates would change the pitch 🤔

Yes it has a hks ssqv. There isn't really a way to change the sound, a lot of it could be because I'm running 20+ psi. Also I run the older version and they do have a nut on the back where you can adjust the tension but it doesn't really change the tone much.

@@CarGuyFridays Yeah I figured it was the older one. Definitely on the look out for the original ones to pop in the internet so I can snag it. The newer ones just don't sound the same. It's like the sound is manufactured to sound like what the original naturally did, except in this case the newer ones more watered down. Haha that's just my opinion though. I'm pretty observative

I swapped out the head (we've a 2 parter showing that) suffice it to say, I'm still chasing down coolant issues under high boost. Itll be back soon though!

Have you done the coolant reroute? Miatas coolant systems have a front in front out system which causes the back cylinders to run super hot especially when turbo'd

I have not, been turboing Miatas since 2001 well aware of the reroute. I don't track the car so I haven't ever been inclined to do it. But with the head coming off soon I'm gonna do one because why not. Thanks for the reply

How many fins does the compressor have? Ur turbo sounds awesome and correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that 11 fins aren't as loud as let's say 6 or 8 although they spool faster. Anyway, buying the same turbo as urs for my miata nb2. I love loud turbos. Lol

Great question and yes just like you I love the sound. The gtx gen2 has 8 blades. The gen 1 is a 11 blade and it's much quieter. The gen2 definitely spools the fastest and sounds amazing.

Did you run into boost creep problems with your setup? I have the same setup and on 12 lb IWG spring I’m getting boost creep. Gonna port out the hole to hopefully fix the issue.

Used to get boost creep on my old 2560, with the GTX stuff I'm running a 16lb spring and don't see creep. 12psi creep is typical of the Garrett t2 turbos, port the hole and grind a channel from the wg inlet to the flange

Isn't this turbo rated to 450bhp? And you're making like 430bhp at the fly? Pretty close 🔥

Yes you are correct, Garrett actually rates it at 475hp but it flows 44lb so it's probably more like 440-450 capable. I've seen a couple people hit 400 with it but it's gonna be close

What transmission are you using cause there's no way a mx5 5 speed or 6 speed can hold that reliably torque wise

Using the stock AZ6 6 speed still. I have broken one already, 4th gear left the building and it had lasted for a little over a year. The most recent transmission was installed Feb 2020 and so far its still in one piece. The BMW trans swap is on the radar.

This Dyno is a problem! The ventilator is much to small! Try to find another dyno with professional ventilation like 130kmh wind speed. The engine will love you and you have also more power!

Compressed air to cool it down. The intercooler doesn't get nearly the airflow on the dyno as it gets while driving so it can get heat soaked easier and mess up tuning since you'd never get such hot air if the car were moving under boost

70ftlb. My head wasn't resurfaced when I built the motor 3 years ago... I'm pretty sure that's the issue. It's fine when the boost is turned down

Well that's a different engine that I'm not familiar with. 2860 does spool well on my 1.8 but with a 1.3 it will lag a little more, but I bet it would still do very well for you

Plan to run this turbo for a daily What rpm does it start boosting and hit max boost???

It starts spooling by 2200 rpm making 1psi it's full boost is around 3400-3900 depending on gear

I routinely run 24psi on it. At that point it's less safe on the turbo and more "safe on the transmissions and rear diff".

I see a couple reasons why the coolant temps would be climbing so high here. The fan you guys had in front of the car on the dyno isn’t going to put out nearly enough air that would be required for what you are doing there. Also, a coolant reroute is definitely something you should look into in order to cool the rear cylinders more efficiently. Mishimoto fans/shroud wouldn’t be a bad idea either

I agree that fan is a joke and way too small, however the HG was going before this dyno session. Coolant had been pushing for a while I just wanted to see what it could do before I opened the engine up. I now run a cut ring hg which has alleviated any issues. I'm not an advocate for the reroute I've ever used one and never had issues without.

The head gasket was leaking and is now fixed. No more over heating. Still, maybe should look closer at those fans!

@@CarGuyFridays I saw your new video with the kraken manifold. Very impressive results. Patiently awaiting more content! I'm in the process of my own 400hp build utilizing an old Garrett t04e 50 trim turbo. As far as cooling I've got a mishimoto shroud paired with 2 12" SPAL fans.
