After decades of being vegetarian, I am now carnivore at 64. I also feel better eating only a few low-oxalate vegetables. The problem with feeling good on a plant-based diet is that the damage occurs incrementally, and no test can really prove it one way or another. I believe in listening to your body. Personally, I thrive on animals and animal fat. I wish it were otherwise, as conventional animal farming is a nasty business, and organic meat is pricey.

I hope you go back and read this because I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum. I tried it the old way of meat and potatoes along with dairy, fish, nuts, seeds, whole grains and did not avoid processed oil. I have had my share of fast foods, bought in to the new supposed healthy stuff which came through in the 90's such as low fat, low sugar, whole grains, supposed better water from plastic bottles and on and on it went. All lies! All marketing for monetary gain by the huge corporations. Being whole food plant base for the past 3 years I can say that I tried the ASD and it almost had me, but due to my faith which led me to a selected few researchers, doctors, biochemist, cardiac surgeons, I now am taking a personal choice which I will take full responsibility if the rest of my years, God willing will be years to my life and life to my years so many blessings with your personal choice because at the age of 65 now, I've learned that we are on our own to take control of our health and keep researching what foods injures the inner walls (endothelia cells) of our arteries which produce nitrous oxide. Remember this is a band aid driven system we live in, why not get to the core cause of the leading reasons for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, dementia which is becoming epidemic with the younger adults having more and more common symptoms of short term loss of memory. It's all about the endothelia thin layer of cells that line the artery walls.

I had two bouts of kidney stones about 12 years ago. My doctor said to drink water and cut down on oxalate. The only problem I have is no one agrees. I was told no kale, lettuce. blackberries, no sardines...they say I can have potatoes, meat etc. Your list says the opposite. Everything else I agree with you. Who do I believe? Everyone is different. I only mildly cut back on certain foods, like beets, spinach chocolate etc. My main thing I find is the best advice is Drink plenty of water but don't overdo it. I check the color of the urine as you suggested. This is the best advice I have heard so far. I just wish all the experts could come up with a list that we can all agree to so I know. I don't mind cutting out my favorite foods, I can't have gluten. I fought that for years but it really makes me sick. Thank you so much...

One medium baked potato has about 97 mg of oxalate, but most is in the skin. A cups of mashed potatoes about 30 mg. Both are classified as high oxalate by my sources, but it depends on serving size. Using volume (cups) and sizes (medium) makes it difficult for people on a low oxalate diet to limit oxalate to 50 mg a day or less. You are taking the right steps since you have not had a recurrence in 12 years. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

This was informative 👏 but if he told us about other foods that are high in oxalate and how we can use herbs to lower our chances of getting kidney stones I would have appreciated this much more, for those who are getting kidney stones and are having back pain or back side pain you can drink apple 🍎 cider vinegar in water 3 times a day, I have stones and I get back pain to my back on the far side I found out from my doctor that I can control it better if I drink apple cider vinegar in my water 3times a day and if I get tired of the taste add a3 tps. Of lemon juice so that's what I'm doing to keep.it under control, 3 table spoons of apple cider vinegar (ACV) in a 8 .Oz of water 3 times a day also I add the lemon juice, it's also good to drink hibiscus tea that also helps remove stones

Experienced much discomfort and then changed my diet to more fruits and veg, spices and even dark chocolate and I felt 100% more healthy, more energy and lot more active. Maybe the portion sizes? also, the high carb breads and eating caused more problems with sugar and glucose, than my new diet and oxalates, although I never overeat anything! I've never had kidney stone but I have an oxalate problem. The body robs calcium from bones causing osteoporosis and osteopenia. Remove oxalate from the diet over time can help bones absorb calcium and reverse damaged bones. Oxalate can also be the cause for other chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia and or gut issues leading to inflammation in the body. Does oxalate damage people?.. of course it does! Oxalates are more than just a kidney problem.
@DiTuroProductions
@DiTuroProductions Жыл бұрын
You do not explain why you have an oxalate problem. Research shows people eating high oxalate foods live healthy lives into their 80's and 90's. They also eat a lot of high calcium foods and not necessarily with high oxalate foods. "Can also be a cause..." is not the same as is a proven cause. Blood calcium level is part of the CMP blood test.

After watching many of these oxalate videos, I have decided to take most of the high oxalate foods out of my diet. I think this approach is prudent.

Everyone's diet comes down to choices. Avoiding high oxalate foods is one choice. I know dozens of people who eat high oxalate foods on a regular basis and feel fantastic. They most of thought your stones were small enough to pass although that is little comfort if they cause severe pain. Your doctor can check for kidney infection and advise if seeing a urologist is warranted. Stone formation is complex affecting about 10% of the population. It is important to stay hydrated. Drinking lots of water is the best way to stay hydrated.

This is very interesting video. Oxalates is something that you shouldn't worry too much about, but they can cause serious problems in people prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones. I eat balanced diet, but my foods that I eat are mostly low oxalate foods, like apples, bananas, and other low oxalate foods. I also eat soured milk (not to be confused with sour milk) and drink yoghurt. But, there are only two high oxalate foods that I eat: dark chocolate and cocoa. These are the two high oxalate foods that I eat, other foods are low oxalate. And I'm healthy person without predisposition for calcium oxalate stones. In terms of cocoa and chocolate, once per week I eat a whole bar (100g) of extra dark chocolate (85% cacao) in one sitting (not every day, but one day per week). In terms of cacao/cocoa powder, I consume only 10g (2 teaspoons), that I put in milk to make hot cocoa (and I drink it unsweetened). I drink only one cup of unsweetened hot cocoa other days when I don't eat chocolate. These are the two foods that are very high in oxalates, and I enjoy in their chocolatey taste. But, I dislike other high oxalate foods. Reason is not only their very high amount of oxalates, but their unappealing and unappetizing taste. For example, spinach tastes terrible with a nasty aftertaste. Instead of it, I eat lettuce (which is low in oxalates, and doesn't leave nasty aftertaste in your mouth like spinach). I'm also planning to include leafy green arugula, which is also low oxalate green food. Apart from spinach, I also dislike Swiss Chard, Rhubarb, Rice Bran, Parlsey (which contains 1600mg of oxalates per 100g), beetroot (I remember when I tried a ½ teaspoon of beetroot juice when I was younger, only to spit it out, since it was almost tasteless). I also don't like kiwi, dates and any, any other high oxalate foods (due to their not so good taste). I drink water as much as possible (1,5 L or more than 2 L in the summer days). Even though I'm healthy person, I watched video from Sally Norton, and while she provides good list of low oxalate foods to eat (and high oxalate foods to avoid) - which is really useful for low oxalate diet, I think that she a little too exaggerates about oxalates. She thinks that high oxalate foods are unhealthy, but that's only true if you eat a pound of them. For example, if you are juicing pounds of spinach or you make a smoothie where the spinach mostly dominates (100ml of that smoothie can contains more than 1000mg of oxalates (which is markedly worse than cocoa and dark chocolate)). Oxalates should not be nutrition concern for healthy people with impeccable health, but for people who are prone to CaOx kidney stones (or have hyperoxaluria), they may benefit from low oxalate diet (where you must limit your oxalate intake to less than 100mg of oxalates (ideally would be less than 50mg of oxalates)). That's all I can say. There's no need to fear about oxalates, however, people who are sensitive to them should be highly cautious.

Caffeine is a very mild diuretic otherwise it would be a regulated drug. Up to 400 mg a day is considered safe for most people. I think if you eat copious amounts of ANY one food each day, you're asking for trouble. Eat a bit of this, a bit of that like the "older" generations did, they didn't have kidney stone problems.. Move your body, exercise, walk, dance, drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty, reduce portions, fast once in a while, limit sugar, gluten, processed foods, and you should be fine. Take supplements for things you may be lacking in, and don't stress so much about food. This theory of high oxalates doesn't hold up 100% as many cultures eat these "high" oxalate foods in their culture on a regular basis and don't ALL have kidney stones...ie. Asia they eat a ton of tofu/soybeans and green tea 10 cups a day!

Also, been having Almond milk after soaking 32 almonds overnight once in 2-3 days - In addition, soaking walnuts, almonds and pumpkin seeds and been having that on alternate days. @@DiTuroProductions I've been plagued with kidney stones for more than 40 years. At first, it was recommended to just avoid a few obvious high oxalate foods such as beets and spinach and drink plenty of water. Now, more knowledge has accumulated and in addition to avoiding the usual high oxalate foods, also take calcium in the form of milk during your meals. I'm lactose intolerant so I use cheese or yogurt. Both have 0 oxalates. The idea is the calcium binds to the oxalates and eliminated without going through the kidneys. Keep in mind some cheese is very high in salt and salt also contributes to forming kidney stones. So, throw out that salt shaker but keep the pepper shaker, it has 0 oxalates. Oh and instead of drinking plenty of water, drink lots and lots and lots of water. When you've drank enough, drink some more.

Everything taken in excess is harmful even if they have nutrient benefits. I would suggest 'moderation' and eat a mix of everything instead.

What about the phenomenon of Oxalate dumping when stopping a high oxalate diet? Sounds odd to me. Where, why are they stored , considerig your liver manufactures oxalate?? 🙏🏻👹🏋🏻🏊‍♀️
@DiTuroProductions

I am not aware of any controlled studies confirming oxalate dumping. The symptoms could be caused by depletion or low levels of essential vitamins and minerals. The theory is oxalate crystals can be deposited anywhere and damage joints, cells, and tissues. And that may be true for some people. The human body is so complex and diets vary so widely it is difficult confirming the health risks with most anti-nutrients. Thank you for your comment.

I think everyone who is concerned about plants and how they protect themselves should read the book by Lierre Keith - the Vegetarian Myth - or look her up on YT. Plants are fantastic and we need to know how they protect themselves against being eaten. They produce many chemicals in their defense which are more or less toxic to us humans.

There is a significant difference between truly toxic plants like hemlock and spinach and other plant foods consumed worldwide with few if any adverse effects and provide a wealth of health benefits. That does not mean all plant foods are 100% safe for everyone. Each person should evaluate and take responsibility for their health and what foods are best for them.

Cooking vegetables reduces oxalate and some vitamins and minerals, but it also increases the bodies ability to absorb the remaining nutrients. Cooked foods are easier to digest than raw foods.

I was watching a keto-cult video were the maker was very worried about plant anti-nutrients and toxics and advocating eating mostly animal based diet. The evils of oxalates was a big reason for eating animals.

Animal foods are a good source of protein and some essential vitamins, but millions of vegans and vegetarians approve animal foods are not essential and most are healthier and out live people eating a high meat diet.

I recently went carnivore. And now have no energy at all. I. Was told I'm. Dumping oxalate s I'm. Seriously confused. I was eating a lot of almonds and almond milk also Cinnamon on sweet potatoes. And dates I practically lived off them as I don't eat grains and carbs and night shades or dairy or legumes and beans. Now I'm. Worried I'm. Eating too much meat. But my digestion is better except lethargy. I have hoshimoto thyroiditis. And am. Worried my thyroid function has gone down since carnovore. I actually think going back to eating paleo which is basically what I was on. Although with no gluten free food s as they don't seem to agree with me either. So. Tired of watching what I eat. 😔

Fatigue and weakness are symptoms of hoshimoto thyroiditis. It is an autoimmune disease. Unlike celiac disease diet is not a known cause of hoshimoto thyroiditis.

I'd get off the carnivore diet ASAP if I were you. Shor term, as an elimination diet, it's fine. But certainly not long term.

Oxalates are real and sesame seeds (tahini) are high in oxalates. Tahini is usually used in small not large amounts. Your symptoms may not be due to oxalate. Sesame seeds can trigger an allergic reaction in some people.

@@DiTuroProductions i don't have any allergy I ate them my entire life just less If it was allergy i woul've stopped immediately, let alone it would be systemic. The thing is i wanted to switch into keto diet and drank like a bottle of it and almond butter and uncooked spinach my kidney hurted that i woke from sleep! I drank apple cider lemon+berries multiple times They relieved me was about to stop keto but searched for kidney friendly fats (olive oil, coconut) maybe they helped too Edit: i ate tons of dark choc too which is high on oxalates.
