The GOLDEN AGE of TELEVISION: This episode, originally from season 4 of the anthology series Four Star Playhouse, was first broadcast by CBS on January 26, 1956. Restored and edited by PizzaFLIX with recreated titles.
Stars: Dick Powell, Frances Bergen, Herb Vigran
Director: William A. Seiter
Created by: Blake Edwards
After a dangerous dame makes a move on Willie Dante at his nightclub, her husband comes back gunning for him. Dante returns fire in self-defense, but is charged with murder when the assailant's weapon goes missing! Is this a frame job?
TRIVIA: Originally created by Blake Edwards for the anthology series Four Star Playhouse in 1953~1955. Eight episodes were produced by and starred Dick Powell as Willie Dante, a former card shark turned nightclub operator with a not-so-secret casino tucked in the back. The show was revisited in 1960 by producer Dick Powell as an actual TV series called "Dante," but this time starred Howard Duff and set in San Francisco instead of Los Angeles.

The thing that blows my mind the most is that cinema was still relatively new back then, and yet they seemed to have really perfected the art of storytelling. And the wit and dialogue from these older movies/shows is unmatched. On the whole, I'm always disappointed with a lot of what is offered these days...things that are watchable but don't wow you or leave a lasting impression, or simply are flawed in certain ways. Ever since discovering these old gems on KZfaq I've been hooked. And it is extremely rare to find any bad ones.

@@zukini8763 I agree 100% Back then they were more perfectionist, they put pride in their work. Today, in comparison, with all the technology the final product is only half as good.

A little bit of trivia for the other seniors out here...Playing the role of Rita Raymond (as shown in the closing credits) was Ms Frances Bergen....She was of course the wife of famous radio/tv star Edgar Bergen ( of Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy {his impudent puppet boy}..as well as the mom of the gorgeous tv/movie star/model Ms Candace Bergen!..You can see where Candace got her beautiful looks from...

This was the fourth of seven episodes featuring Powell's "Willie Dante", written by Richard Carr and directed by William A. Seiter. Dick finally spun it off as its own series in 1960- featuring Howard Duff as "Dante". It lasted one season on NBC.

A little more for trivia buffs? This series, as it says above, was created by Blake Edwards. Mr Edwards would also produce Peter Gunn, and Mr Lucky....apparently Edwards had a "thing" about nightclubs(?). And more trivia? Mr Lucky's sidekick was a pre-Wild, Wild, West, Ross Martin.

If Dante had video security he could make a case against the woman, her "husband", his employees. But video security hadn't been invented yet.
@jsat5609
@jsat5609 4 жыл бұрын
It sort of had been invented, but it was extremely expensive, and not at all common. A high security military base might have it, but certainly not a place like Dante's. Also, there was no cheap way to record live video then. Even the tv networks complained incessantly about the crude--and expensive--video recording technology in 1956.
