Two ways to keep thief's from getting into your car and stealing it. 1: Lock the doors manually, it does not transmit a signal. 2: Buy a car with a stick shift!

Unlikely this will lead to something but the wrong person may see it and go after him. If you really like him just ask for a dm or something instead of openly advertising them.

Way back in the 70's, before hi tech, my buddy had a very desirable classic that he wanted to protect. He had the rear number plate on hinges such that it could drop down. Before attempting to start the car he would hit a secret button that de-armed the system. If not pressed the car would start normally but the engine would cut out after a few minutes leaving the thief stranded. All this time the rear licence plate had dropped down to reveal a "this car has been stolen" notice.. sometimes lo tech is better

Easy fix, program a second command on the same key (the panic button), so you would need to disarm the panic first then unlock the doors. That way when the thief tries to unlock the car the "panic" goes off. Personally I have an alarm system that is separate from the cars security own, so even if they get to unlock, the alarm will go off the moment it is unlocked without disarming the system first.

You could say it is irresponsible to show this but thieves already know it. It's the general public that need to know it so they will know NEVER to leave anything valuable in a car. If the car gets stolen and you still have the key, it will be replaced by your insurers. If you've left something personal in the car, like a phone or laptop, it may be irreplaceable.

I have a 6 speed diesel dually. That makes it hard, but I have a hidden fuel shut off, that makes it harder. I have 7 foot chain link around my home, with motion sensors. That makes it nearly impossible. I have a half breed pit bull, and a pure 156 pound female timber wolf, running loose in the yard. That makes it deadly.

Before retiring I was a Field Service Engineer. I carried a lot of very expensive gear in my station wagon. We did not have electronic locks then, just car keys but we still had thieves. So I had large steel box made with a solid padlock and chain loop so it could be bolted down inside car. On the case I put some stickers on the box so any one looking in could read "Radiation Hazard. Nuclear Material." No one ever broke into my car & forceed open that steel box to grab my equipment. The driver @ 2:40 who lost every thing. Are we learning yet?

Cyber security is always a catch up game. The bad guys are always coming up with something new and the good guys are stuck patching it up the best they can. It's important to know that no system is 100% secure, but you can add layers of security that will discourage bad guys from wanting to break into your car or computer or whatever. Just adding a simple lock on the diagnostic port can work wonders in preventing thieves from jacking your car. Parking a in a more secure area is another form of security. Being more discreet in what you are doing can help as well. There are simple steps you can take to lower your chances of being a victim of a crime.

I forgot one thing. My daughter had a 2001 Pontiac. Her purse was stolen with her keys in it. She sent the vehicle identification number to GM and they sent her a pre programmed key that started her car. They NEVER asked for a copy of the registration certificate or anything. She sent the VIN and her return address and they sent her a key. If a thief was patient for a few days, they could steal ANY car. Your reporter said something about thieves willing to do anything possible to cancel security devices. Just remember, ANY time you build a better rat trap, all you do is breed smarter rats. My father always said that locks are only to keep honest people out. A dishonest one will break a window, lock or anything else necessary to get in.
@salbers

I don't know the police get awful testy about that then you get the feds involved nice idea though. LoJack had a system that would on command lock the doors horn starts going off and the lights start flashing! The theft is trap inside until the police get there. for around $40 you can put a tracking device in any car won't stop them from stealing it but makes it easier to recover it.

There are other ways to defeat the thieves and totally frustrate their efforts to steal cars by these methods. At worst, it will force them to have to work much harder and longer at figuring out what is keeping them from reprogramming your car and getting it to start. That GM cybersecurity exec should have been fired for letting something so weak get by to production. ALL the auto makers are in on the scam.

Yes I know this is an old post. There are some issues here. Auto makers are not going to want their cars to be stolen because insurance rates go up will make it more difficult for people to buy cars. And, if the cars were 100 % secure and did not allow for reprogramming, you would be complaining that you have to junk your car because you lost your keys.

+Rustic Shine A bloke in London did a variation on this. He put a time-delay-relay in the feed to the fuel pump. Unless the relay was bypassed by the secret switch, the car would only go for about a hundred yards. The hope was that the thief would be left stranded and that the police would say "Is this your car Sir?" Ah those were the days! The real bummer of course is that in the UK car theft is usually just classed as TWOC (Taking without owners consent) Its just viewed as borrowing the car without being polite enough to ask! Watch out for thieves borrowing your registration number and getting a free tank of petrol. Yobs in Plymouth did this to a cop!

This is why all newer cars use a "one time" use code. Using computer technology. Only older cars use a continuous unchanging code. Which is the substance of this clip.
@TUDORMARCU16
@TUDORMARCU16 5 жыл бұрын
The one time code is also vulnerable. There was a defcon talk on hacking roling codes. Capture and jam a code. The owner see the car didn't lock and just presses again on the key. Now the hacker has 2 codes that the car didn't see. Uses one to make the owner think he locked his car and the other to unlock it.

You can just wait for someone to lock their car and record the radio frequency and code then wait for the person to leave and replay the recorded code and your in. Although that only works on older car as modern Oners have a self changing code so only works once. You need some gadgetry to do this though. But much older cars that were the first to use the remotes some apparently would work with something as basic as a tape record er

tjeulink true but still requires more skill than just pressing a button ;) We know that if they want to get acces they will get it, now why make it easy? why not go back the the old annoying and time consuming and skill requiring way. Probably because it's not really that big of a deal or just because that's just what someone decided.

I can think of a method just off the top of my head to fix the fob capture method. When you press the button the fob sends a request. Car then sends back a time code. Fob then sends back a code generated from a private key and the time code. You'd need slightly more expensive fob but that's it. Such difficult much expensive wow. If they really cared about security they would have done something like this a decade ago. They just don't care.

Thing is Car Scan Tools are not just key programmers and you also hurt smaller shops who can't afford the more expensive tools who use ebay to get those tools for legit business. As I stated in your recent video there needs to be more authentication and time required to Program a key then just clicking a button waiting 3 secs. Ford had it right in the early 2000s where it tool 15 minutes to get into the Key Programming procedure for Passkey II then another 15 to program the key. Theives don't want to wait that long for software to steal your vehicle.
@kde5fan737
@kde5fan737 4 жыл бұрын
That is BS that anyone buying a key programmer on Ebay would "more than likely not be legitimate". I lost my key for my car and they wanted $300 to program the car and another $150 for a new key and it's a 2000, not something very new. I could buy a new key, 2 fobs, ignition and programmer for about $175 - and closer to half that if you buy the key software and a programming kit seperate.

The benefits of driving a 1996 Chevy truck/ 2005 Impala. Old school locks, no wireless BS or connection to the internet. A regular "key" unlocks the doors and turns on the ignition. Besides, not many thieves would be interested in a 2 tone '96 Chevy truck. If they did steal it, odds are they wouldn't know how to drive a 5 speed manual transmission.

Yeah, pretty funny. Maybe her point was that the only thing a vehicle can be used for now is a projection screen. How can you drive it anywhere if you can't trust a lock to protect it? That's a funny idea but I've seen CBC do many silly things like that over the years. My serious guess is that some camera guy thought it would look original and interesting. Projecting on a vehicle is a quirky reference to "vehicles", the theme of the story. Unfortunately, the person with this idea probably doesn't get how funny it looks to most people.
