Күн бұрын

I played Division 1 basketball at Colgate University. And over the years I have watched thousands of college basketball games. Today, I’m going to take a detailed look at one of the highest IQ college basketball player’s I have ever seen, and see what makes him special.
Let’s get right into it.
Thomas Walkup played at Stephen F. Austin from 2012-2016, a run where the school went to 4 straight NCAA tournaments. I want to take a detailed look at Walkup’s NCAA tournament game against West Virginia during his senior year where they upset the 3 seeded Mountaineers.
I’m going to break down some really little plays that would normally go unnoticed during the course of a game to show you how a really smart basketball player actually thinks on the court.

SFA alum here: Walkup was a joy to watch for my last few years on campus. I remember a few times where Underwood would play him as stretch 4 because he could rebound and play a little post. He could legit play 1-5 in their system and made them a hard team to guard. That era of SFA basketball was so special 🥹

Just to give some more context on Walkup. He's played in Europe for the past six years and has really been an elite defender in Ludwigsburg, Žalgiris and Olympiacos with the two latter being Euroleague teams and I guess he's the best defensive guard there is in the Euroleague. Many players have also said that Walkup is the worst defender to play against cause he's just so good. He does have a major shortcoming which is shooting. This season he has averaged a little over 27% on threes in the Euroleague and practically everyone goes under on him on screens. Quite often he hesitates to shoot making it pretty obvious that he is going to miss rather often. If you haven't watched Olympiacos play, I highly suggest you to do so, especially now that you're in Finland (I'm south of you, in Estonia) and the games are on at a good time (I don't know if any Finnish channels cover Euroleague, but I'm sure you could get a Euroleague TV pass). They play a very-very team-based game that's focused on ball movement, off the ball movement and agressive defense. In a system like this it's essential for Walkup to start making threes because otherwise he gives the opponents a chance compress inside the perimeter and thus take away some space that Olympiacos so badly needs. To be honest, I think it would be very interesting if you could do some deep dives on high level European games. There are plenty of full games available on KZfaq either from the Greek finals last season or the ABA League finals between two Euroleague teams who play in front of absolutely crazy audiences. I subscribed and binge-watched plenty of your content. I hope everything goes well in your career as you seem like a really nice guy and from the stats in Finland you're a pretty capable basketball player too. And even though it's very far from being a top European league, you got to start somewhere, right? And I always like to remember that Ricky Hickman once also played in Finland and within three years he was in the Euroleague where he even won a championship and was a really solid players for many seasons. May you find success, just like Ricky!

Wow, thank you for this message. Yes, I am very aware of Walkup's success overseas, it is really cool to see his college game translate over here in such a competent way. I appreciate the support, and we will see about Euroleague... Definitely going to get into more European games in the near future, it seems like a lot of comments have been about this exact thing. Again, thank you for taking the time to write this message!

No worries. Players get a lot of stick anyway so it's nice to be nice to someone who deserves it. It seems like the popularity of European basketball is rising a lot and it's great to see as the game over here is excellent, although very different from the NBA. And having pro players analyse, react and give insight would just be a great thing.

Love watching teachers of the game. So many think they know the game but are novices. Two video ideas nobody else has done in regards to the nba. Not sure if you will make nba videos but if you do these are videos I’d like to see. 1. What is clutch? I’ve asked KZfaqrs to discuss this but they don’t bite. My opinion is that anyone can make a game winning shot when the game is tied but show me a player that gets a bucket down 1, 2, or 3 points. You can see it in their decision process. They might chunk up something wild if the game is tied but if they are down one they will make the safer play. You can have 20 game winners and not be as clutch as the guy that takes shots when no one else wants to. 2. A video about Klay Thompson and how much Jordan Poole truly affected the warriors offense. In my opinion Poole stifled their offense. He killed both player and ball movement. Watching the warriors this season when they actually have ball movement Klay plays great but if it becomes stagnant and heavily dependent on the PnR Klays game struggles. Love the analysis. College basketball is still my favorite. Could you discuss the speed of the game compared to high school and nba? To me high school is chaos. It’s fast but fast for no reason. Is it the size of the court that makes high school seem faster. I know it isn’t but the skill makes it (college) look slower.

Nowadays he is even greater in Olympiacos! He is probably the foundation of this team! Here are the comments that the opposing team's coach of Olympiacos made about their loss at the Euroleague Final 4 semifinals: "In the post-game press conference, Monaco's head coach Sasa Obradovic first wanted to highlight the effort Thomas Walkup did on the court. Walkup didn't score a single point but dished out 7 assists. Even though he finished the game with just 6 PIR points, his plus-minus stat was the second-best on the entire Olympiacos team with +19. "The real justice is when you see the player who scored zero points and dominated the game. Zero points," he said. "There was a leader there. He took the ball, he took responsibility, he played people on the spot. He destroyed it defensively." " Here is the 3rd quarter in which Olympiacos scored 27 points, whilst Monaco only 2 and that was primarily due to Walkup! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtGHo6iCmsWdc6c.htmlsi=xJnXg3X4D2ZdRrmV
