Description:
🎧 In this engaging episode of the Advanced English Podcast, join hosts Kat Teacher from the USA and Mark Teacher from the UK as they share stories about parenting their teenage children. This episode offers a fascinating look into family life in different cultures, all while helping to improve your English comprehension and speaking skills.
🇺🇸 Kat from the US talks about her daughters, Ellen and Emily. Ellen, the athlete, loves playing basketball and soccer, while Emily, the artist and fashionista, is always busy with creative projects. Kat shares the dynamics of having two teenage daughters under one roof, their individual social lives, and her pride in their growth and achievements. Despite wishing they would focus more on homework, she's proud of the women they are becoming.
🇬🇧 Mark from the UK describes his children, Harry and Sophie. Harry is a sports enthusiast, always active with football or cricket, and Sophie, the little artist, excels in drawing and drama classes. Mark discusses the sibling dynamic, their occasional spats, and the lively atmosphere at home with their friends around. He mentions his wish for them to spend more time on studies but expresses contentment with their overall performance in school.
📚 As they narrate their experiences, Kat and Mark explain various English terms and idiomatic expressions related to parenting and family life. This episode is not just an English lesson but also a window into the joys and challenges of raising teenagers in different cultural settings.
🌟 Share your own experiences or tips on parenting teenagers in the comments section! Don't forget to subscribe for more episodes that combine language learning with real-life insights.

Thank you for teaching us real living English. The phrase 'have got a real knack for something' reminds me of the collocation 'be knackered' = be exhausted (is it a rude one?). I wonder if they are semmantically connected somehow?
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening 5 ай бұрын
You're very welcome - and thank you for your great questions! I (Mark) have only ever heard of "knackered" being rude only once before, and I think nowadays that's quite an 'old-fashioned' way of treating the word. Almost everyone I know uses it to mean "really tired" or "exhausted", and that includes me as well. I have no idea if they are actually connected, but I looked it up and apparently there is an obsolete (very old and unused) word: "knacker" which apparently means "to kill, to tire, to exhaust" - so it seems like it stems from that word. I can't say how that's connected to "skill" though - maybe from battles and sword fighting!?

Hi, Mark and Kate. Would you like to explain a little bit of the difference between older people and elderly people? As well as how to use old in comparison and superlative sentences. Thank you
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening 5 ай бұрын
Hi good morning! I think it’s just about being polite when we are talking about seniors (the oldest group of people in our society ages 65+) Old people: this is probably the least polite Older people: more polite (talking about seniors) The elderly: more formal (you might hear this on the news or read it in an article) When we talk about our kids (if you have 3): My oldest The middle child My youngest If you have 2 kids, it’s funny we can still use youngest and oldest, I guess it’s to say of all the kids I could have she’s my oldest and the other is my youngest. Hope that helps!

A nice and lovely way of teaching English in British and American accent. English is a sweet language.I love writing English in Whatsapp status. Mr Mark, you're English teacher. Could you please tell me in which school of London, you teach English? I spent just over six years in London. London is a fascinating place of learning . Every one respect law , and U.K governments worship education, that really impressed me a lot. Both of you are impressive and English language lovers. Well done, both Thank you

Even if there are two kids you can say 'the oldest -the youngest'. I was once taught that only 'the elder, the older, the younger, the taller ' were correct. 🤦‍♀️Thank you for your language insights!
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening 5 ай бұрын
I would probably use “the older one” or “the taller one” and that would easily be correct! The taller of the two The younger of the two Is also correct! Yes, I’m not sure why it feels natural to say “she’s the oldest (child) in her family” there’s multiple people in the family but maybe only two kids! Thanks for your comment we’re happy you’re enjoying the lessons!
