🌴 Vacation Tales: UK vs USA - Advanced English Podcast Episode
🎧 Pack your bags and join us in this exciting episode of the Advanced English Podcast, where hosts Kat from the USA and Mark from the UK recount their recent vacation experiences. This episode offers a delightful journey through their travel stories, showcasing the highs and lows of vacationing, all while improving your English listening and comprehension skills.
🇺🇸 Kat shares her adventurous trip that began with a bit of airport drama due to a delayed flight. Despite the rocky start, the trip was filled with memorable activities like a guided city tour that made history come alive, paddleboarding adventures, and relaxing beach days. She also mentions a small issue with the hotel room’s AC, but highlights how quickly the problem was resolved, ensuring a pleasant stay.
🇬🇧 Mark describes his heavenly trip that started with a slight delay on the runway. His vacation was packed with activities at the resort, including historical walking tours and thrilling experiences like windsurfing and scuba-diving. Most of his time was spent unwinding on the beach or by the pool, absorbing the serene atmosphere. He recalls a minor hiccup with a spa appointment but praises the staff for their accommodating service, making for a wonderful holiday overall.

I"d like to share my experience of my first journey during my time at University. I bet, you never guess which country it was. Mongolia! It was kind of weird trip. I fell short of my expectations.If you're expecting stunning views while traveling to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, you might be disappointed. From the train window, all you see are sand dunes and swirling winds. Despite that, our ten days were packed with memorable experiences. The highlight was definitely the guided city tour. The local guides were amazing and really brought the city's history to life. We visited numerous historical buildings, including some temples, and tried traditional Mongolian food for the first time, including dishes made from horse milk. Personally, I found the smell and taste revolting, definitely not something I enjoyed. A bit of drama was that we always were having red eyes due to constant sand and winds. That said, the vacation overall went quite well.
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening 3 ай бұрын
Wow! Thanks so much for sharing such a detailed story! Sorry to hear that Mongolia was a little underwhelming - at least you can check it off your bucket list and say you drank some horse milk! I know a few people who have taken the Trans-Siberian express, and they were also a little tired of the view by the end (apart from Lake Baikal and some other parts of Russia). Hopefully your next vacation is more relaxing and exciting :)

My last vacation was amazing, I was in Thailand. The trip was packed with a lot of places to visit such as temples, floating market or activities such as boat ride. Hi, In this episode, Mark said businesses will close. Offices will be closed. My question is: Are both active and passive voices for “close” here ok? I usually see the sign on the storefront says “closed.” Thank you very much.
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening 5 ай бұрын
Hi there! Great question! In the sentences you mentioned, I didn't actually use the Passive Voice. In the sentence: "Offices will be closed." 'Closed' is an adjective. For example: "The office will be + [open] on Monday at 9." or "The offices will be + [brand new.]" Lots of students find it tricky though, because the 3rd form (past participle) of "close" is the same word as the adjective: *[close - closed - *closed* ]*. *And* it's tricky because you *can* hear and see this verb in the passive voice often. Remember that with the passive voice, another agent (thing / person) is acting on the store / office / building. For example: - "The roads [were closed] + [by the police]." Maybe there was an accident, a crime or a fire, so the police closed the road to traffic. - "The restaurant [was closed] + [by the health authorities]." Maybe there were rats in the kitchen! So the health authorities told the restaurant to close. The restaurant owner did not close it like their usual schedule. I hope that makes sense! (Mark)

Hi Mark, when you pronounced "spa appointment", it sounded like "spar appointment". I hear this often in the 'Peppa Pig' show. They say "Peppa and George" and it sounds "Peppar and George". Your thoughts?
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening 5 ай бұрын
Haha it's true! The British accent has something called a "non-Rhotic" letter 'R'. This means the letter is basically pronounced as the sound: "ah." British accents (in the southern parts especially) also like to use the long 'A' vowel sound. So this combination means "spa" sounds like 'sparr' Or "Pa" (dad) sounds like "Parr" Or "Ma" (mum) sounds like "Marr" Peppa Pig has a southern English accent too (as far as I know), so she's following this rule! Kids' TV shows are actually a great way to listen and spot these kinds of things - nice work! Hope that helps!
