Hi Matt. I worked for Mitsubishi for 7 years. The reason that they are rare is because they just didn't sell in big numbers new. Lots of them ended up as demonstrators and courtesy cars. GDi stands for Gasoline Direct Injection.. The five door is better to drive than the three door but both were a bit jerky to drive. Mitsubishi reliability was always high so they only ever came back for regular servicing. That model you bought looks like the Equippe version which was pretty much the entry level model and they also offered an Elegance model and one special Edition Warrior version for a short while. Unfortunately they were just dull and soulless but reliable. None of the guys back in the day wanted them as a smoker opting instead for the Carisma or Galant or the occasional Colt Mirage rather than the Pinin.

Had a 2000 1.8 GDI 3 door would NEVER start on its own unless with a jump had new battery all it did was turn over but it ran perfectly once it got going

Galant always rather liked. Carisma bypass made in Netherlands and was another good drab car. A lot of Volvo sharing.

@Drone Tours That's probably the GDi concept was good in theory but didn't work as well in the UK because our petrol is slightly dirtier than in Japan. Hence, they used to soot up regularly and could be difficult to start. Most needed a de coke by 50k miles. If memory serves me correctly, the original models were badged GL and GLS before they went to Equippe, Elegance and Warrior. And there was for a brief period an Evo version which I don't think was sold in the UK market 🤔

Bought a 3 door Pinin, new in 2001. It was written off in an accident and I am sure the car's safety features saved my life. Also had a Colt, a Space Star, another Pinin, a Carisma and an original design Outlander. All great cars.

You did well with this one Matt. Low miles and especially with no current major corrosion, they’re ‘hen’s teeth’ rare. I’ve owned a 2.0L Warrior’ Pinin (even rarer) for the last 5 years. Love the shape and short wheelbase. Have needed to get the welding done (to be expected) but we love it as a runaround. In the snow, the 4WD really is brilliant and great fun. AND I’m comparing it with a Range Rover/Landcruiser here. That flashing diff light still a problem (you didn’t mention). Sometimes just a sticky switch as the various modes not been used much but could be vacuum solenoid related. GDI = ‘direct injection’ petrol engine - main implication means E5 petrol only - 10% ethanol in E10 will eat the fuel lines etc eventually. GDI engines also found on some older Volvos too…..

You should get the £3.5k you're asking, especially if you tell them it's had a new flange. If they don't like the dent in the front they could always cover it with either red electrical tape of a Union flag, as long as the fit it the correct way up, like the last owner did.

I had one of these as a hire car in Cyprus a few years ago. I loved it. A nice handy size and not to high up seating position. Great for taking in the views and good for driving in traffic on unfamiliar roads. The one I had was automatic and It did seem a bit thirsty. I have often thought of buying one here in the UK but have never come across a decent one for sale.

When Mitsubishi introduced the second generation Pajero in '91 they allowed Hyundai to build the first generation Pajero under license as the Hyundai Galloper, I bought a Galloper in the Middle East back in 2001, it was an excellent off-road vehicle and was more than capable of keeping up with vehicles like the Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol and the Shogun when out in the desert.

I've a 3 door 1.8GDI. Had it almost 5 years as a fourth car! They drive really well and more civilised than a Jimny. Great for nipping around and bad weather. Even towed my mates LR 90 when it broke down LOL. Rust is the killer, but if you get a good one, worth every penny. The engine oil in the GDI does turn dark almost instantly after an engine oil change, and mines done less than 50k miles and had 5 oil changes while I have had it the last 8k miles. If I could buy a new one I would.

This is the sort of thing the old school Top Gear was like, simple motor related stuff, rather than super car this, and super that. I'd watch it every week instead of my eyes glazing over when the Germans come out with yet another car that most people can't afford and that you couldn't take anywhere in this country anyway!

The rear centre seat belt identification is to help the "challenged" folk to connect the right belt with the right socket. Remember owners manuals of old used to tell you how to adjust the valve clearances, now days, to not consume the contents of the battery..... Flashing 4WD indicators usually mean that the desired function has not fully engaged/disengaged yet. Sometimes requires some wheel movement to complete. GDI is Gasoline Direct Injection, so the petrol is injected directly into the combustion chamber just before ignition. Supposed to be more fuel efficient than port injection and lower emissions. Same with the diesel engine, no pre-combustion chamber. Good to see it has been saved from the scrap yard for a while yet. Chassis rot is a difficult and expensive to repair well. Your cost for Waxoil treatment is very reasonable, good way to preserve any vehicle.

These were great little motors - especially the 3 door 2 litre - went like sh*t off a shovel and actually handled (believe it or not) All the running gear is good, interior is a bit "Suzuki" (basic) and they love to rust. The rot is worst at the back, deep under the bumper where you can't see it.

Just a thought, but whenever I pull the dipstick on a car to check the oil I always sniff the oil on the dipstick. The smell can tell you a lot about the condition of the oil and give a good indication of the condition and use of the engine. If it smells strongly of petrol then maybe the car has only been used for short journeys and never warmed up properly or the engine is rather worn internally and the oil rarely changed.

Hi matt and everyone else who can answer my question, relatively new to my interest in cars. I decided in 2021 to service my car myself, kept receipts and took pictures of all work carried out, since then I have took my car to VW specialist garages. I found the servicing process relatively easy and I enjoyed it. It also saved me money by doing it myself. My question is if someone came to you with a car with no official service history, but plenty of receipts and pictures of work carried out by the owner, would this devalue the car if they where to sell it on or trade it in. Thanks matt.

I was pretty optimistic for this car; it looked well loved. Sure some of the 'care' has been very much "Driveway Mechanic" standard, especially that Union Flag to cover a dent, but the fact it had been rust-sealed suggested a previous owner was prepared to lavish care on the car (Opinions on the red colour is each to their own), but things like the front still having official Mitsubishi mats and it showing signs someone had cleaned it regularly must've all been good signs. Again it's an example of how reliable a car can be if cared for properly; an 18 year old care that is known for major rust issues, and all it needed was a wheel bearing.
