Manual seats are a good thing. Anyone planning on keeping a vehicle for a substantial length of time, when the electronic seats break down they're hideously expensive to fix; even on non-luxury models. Giving drivers two options where the seats won't slide up & down uncontrollably. Either all the way forward, or all the way back. The manual ones practically never break. For a single owner/single driver car, they just make more sense.

My dad had a 320d saloon SE I believe as well back in 2012 bought it with 140k on it and a couple years later sold it for spares and repairs as it had a dpf and egr failure on 194k and it went to Germany the guys we sold it to were gonna take it there and repair it. Unfortunately he just had too many problems with the car so decided to sell it. My aunty had one exactly the same but blue(ours was silver) at the same time we did and hers was ultra reliable and lasted long after ours they had it up until around 2017.

I think the E46 era BMWs were their last classic, elegant designs. As soon as Chris Bangle got his talentless hands on the brand, BMW has produced nothing but tasteless and tortured designs, and most of those have aged very poorly indeed.

@@Ijusthopeitsquick I don’t have an issue with BMW designs of late or Bangles era, I think they just need time to grow but they would still look modern come decades later. @@snbala It's a matter of taste, of course, but I miss the simple sleek elegance of the E39 saloon and the E46 Coupé. Their proportions are perfect, and their headlights are where they are supposed to be: on the front of the car facing forwards. I don't understand the modern fad of smearing half the headlight back along the wing. Most modern cars do this, though.

I have to say Matt you do seem to go to a lot of effort on bringing up the cars to a good standard and I really think that is very commendable. I have met a few traders in my time and I don't think any of them would do a fraction of the repair work that you get done on your cars. And most of them would probably just use the KZfaq channel for pretending they do this routinely on their vehicles just to create a good impression.

The space saver spare wheel lives under the rear wheel well trim! Remove the wing nut, lift the panel up and there it is! E46's all suffer the same old problems - brake pipes, wishbone bushes, window regulators etc etc etc. The ES (edition sport) replaced the base model E45 in June 2004. To the base spec it added sports suspension, 16" alloys (two different types - 10 spoke style 136 or 'BBS' style 42), body colour door handles, leather M steering wheel without multifunction, manual air con and a black headlining plus a storage compartment package. That one cost £20,750 new.

Taken it from 145k miles to just over 200k and it’s one of the most complete cars I’ve ever owned. Comfortable, practical, good looking, quick, fun to drive, respectable, and even pretty reliable! Other than the usual BMW cooling system issues, springs/shocks and the odd sensor it’s been pretty good. Sadly rust has got to mine and the rear arches are a state now, but it just walked the last MOT without any problems. Really enjoy these vids. We had our 2003 plate 320d Touring for 12 years and it was a great car. Reasonable performance, assured and predictable handling, and very comfortable, esp over long journeys. The only downside was rusty front and rear arches. We had the rear ones cosmetically repaired and new front wings fitted when the car was eight years old. (the arch liners wear away the galvanising on the inside of the arch and it rusts from the inside out). By the time we sold it in 2018 they were rusting through again! Otherwise, a great wee car

Had a couple of E46 lovely cars. 318SE and 320d I much prefer the ride of the SE compared to the sport. I did miss the smoothness of my E36 328 though

It was worth it • It’s impossible at your experience that this was a “surprise” for you. It’s 04’ • Of course it needed something as important as brakes service. In my opinion I’m impressed that you spend so little! Great content, I truly appreciate you for saving this gems 💎

Please Matt, please recognize and acknowledge, this is probably the best example of a 19 yr old car that has clearly been very well cared for by the previous owner. It doesn't get any better. So a best minimum estimate of what you will need to spend is the same old, four tyres (and bonus, you spent zero on wheel refurishment), then break discs and pads all around. You got off lightly!!. If I was living in the UK, I would buy it at the asking price right away. Actually at this age, I think its much better to have a basic spec and not all those fancy extras that for sure will go wrong. Cracking BMW!!

A colleague of mine had an E46 saloon. It was a silver 330i and it was absolutely loaded. Harmon Kardon sound system, full leather interior with heated seats, 6 speed manual box, M sport bits... Anyway, it was an absolute shed. He didn't care for it at all. Rusty, left oil slicks everywhere he parked, cigarette butts on the floor... Poor thing didn't stand a chance. I still hate him for how he treated his car.

I had to have the brake pipes done on my E46 saloon when I had one, simple parts but very labour intensive! Frequent issues with ABS wheel speed sensors and traction control turning on and off, faulty rear light clusters and electrics and of course the rusty arches but I loved it, my first "proper" car really

Nice to again see a dealer who puts people not getting injured (or worse) over profit. The brake pipes might have held up, but "might" is a bit sketchy on the old conscious :) Glad to see it has sold to a happy viewer and purchaser!! It looks a lovely car, particularly considering its age.

The spare wheel is actually under the light grey insert in the lower boot. Remove the brass coloured cap and the inner lifts out to reveal the space saver spare. Great video, as a previous owner of an E46, I totally agree with you that this was the high water mark for BMW.

I had a 330i Touring manual, it was a fantastic drive. Fast, comfortable and looked great. Only sold it when the ECU was killed twice by water ingress from a temperature sensor. A known issue that my local BMW "specialist" was unaware of, hence the loss of 2 ECUs!!!

Bought a 00 reg one of these about 13 years ago for 1,300 euros but it was an auto, bought it for my sister and her family who live in the US and holiday here (Ireland)every year for about six to eight weeks during the summer, it was a lot cheaper than ten years of rental cars. It could haul five adults and luggage anywhere, never failed an NCT (MOT). Sold it recently for 900 euros, money well spent.

As soon as you said your catchphrase I knew the next sentence would include “corroded brake pipes” we’ve had a number of E46s in the family over the years and absolutely every one of them has needed the same thing (so too did the E34 incidentally). Still though, you’ve kept an absolute gem on the road, so massive well done for that! Can’t wait til the next one!

When I started driving brake pipe replacement was bread and butter. Now few like doing them. And charge accordingly.

Only 0.44 seconds in and just spotted a nice looking RAM truck. Always interesting to see vehicles out of their natural habitat. Reminds me in a way of that 500e you imported a while back.

Really enjoy your content. Small tip, i think your stabilisation on your go pro is on (or whatever your side window camera is), which is why you get that movement in the car as you drive. It's a slight sea sickness feeling - I am a BBC cameraman and had the same issue. Until I turned off stabilisation. Anyway, keep up the great content.

Those doors shut soldly, my 330i is still a fine thing, 220,000 miles looked after by a specialist. Not so keen on the door handles but that design is to aid rescue, pulling on them makes it easier to get you out.

I love the E46 but they get through brake discs, brake calipers and they cost money in that respect. but it’s well worth it. This and the E 39 are brilliant cars that cost a bit to run, but well worth it.
