My step-grandfather owned a 1955 Buick Special with a V8 engine. For a time in the mid-1960s my older teen brother drove it for several months; that car was remarkable with tire squealing torque acceleration and top speed of 100+ mph - 161 km/h; which for its era was remarkable. It also had a soft ride, too.

I was 16 years old in 1969 and I had a two tone green and white, 1955 buick 2 door hardtop that I paid $75 for it , i would spend hours doing burnouts in that ole buick, driving backwards in reverse and then floor the gas pedal and drop her down in drive and do burnouts after burnouts after burnouts , My friends would hang out the back windows to watch the tires smoking. I tried to kill that car the summer 69. I couldn't do it! I abused it and sold it to my neighbor for 50 bucks, it kept on running . One day me and my 3 buddies skipped high school and we pooled all the money we had in our pockets and come up with 75 cents total, we drove that car all day and all night, all over des Moines , Those were the days my friend. I love the ole highway patrol show , I am thoroughly enjoying them again, thank you.

I used to watch this show with my dad back in the 50's when I was only around 5 yrs old. I really dug Mr Crawford because he just looks like a crusty old detective. Now they are putting the re runs on antenna tv YAY!!!!! I caught an episode the other day. Nice car dude!!

Crawford was know as "old 502" when he was on the show. A 502 is driving under the influence and he had so many his license was suspended. The CHP officer consultant was told to keep him away from the booze and he wasn't allowed to drive on public streets when his license was suspended.

I had a 55" 4-door Buick super.....got it for $400 and drove it home....I miss it everyday.

I grew up watching Highway Patrol, as a note there were some episodes they shot on closed roads because Broderick Crawford was arrested for drunk driving!

Cool car, dude! I remember that show--loved it!

A lot of the scenes on Highway Patrol were filmed on dirt roads and private streets because of Broderick Crawford's DUI arrests and suspended driver's license. In a unrelated issue, Pat Harvey (the TV anchor sitting next to Jerry Dunphy) was the hottest woman (still is!) on LA TV.

I bet you tried valiantly to find a 55 2 door post to match the one in the show...About 10 years ago, I was contributing stories for a French Old American car magazine called "V8", and they featured an identical 55 2 door post CHIPS Buick. Too bad that magazine went under a couple years after that article appeared, as the photography for car featured was outstanding!

sorry to tell you. The show came o in 56 and he drove 56 Rivera foist season (holes in the fender) then a dodge the rest of the time.

Sorry to burst this guys bubble, but after watching these shows over time (I love the show too) Dan Mathews (Crawford) drove more Dodges, Mercurys & an occasional Ford then Buicks. Subordinates drove the Buicks after the first season. In real life the Dodges would blow away those old Buicks w/ their crappy Dynaflow transmissions. As side note, in the very first episode #1 (probably the pilot) he drives an Oldsmobile.
