Osaka's Gate Tower Building is an amazing sight to see because ... well, how should I put this? A highway goes through the building.
It literally does, and there is a story behind it.
In this episode, John not only goes inside to see where the elevator takes him, he also drives through it -- in a Lotus Seven. We'll also go up the Umeda Sky Building and catch some fantastic angles of the city, skyline and Gate Tower Building.
THE STORY:
Here it is from the building owner.
It’s basically a land rights dispute with a sort of happy ending.
The property was owned by a business (coal and wood company) since the early Meiji era but when business declined, so did the buildings in the 1970s. The area was approved to be redeveloped in 1983 but the property holder refused to give up the land, even though new building permits had been refused to him. The highway corporation and the property owner negotiated for 5 years and what you see today is their compromise. Highways usually buy the land they’re on but a new law in 1989 allowed the possibility of having two owners on the same spot, really meant for highways to go underground but hey - let’s get creative.
The highway is the legal tenant of floors 5 through 7.
The current building tenant on the other floors is TKP.
WHERE IS THE BUILDING WITH THE HIGHWAY THROUGH IT?
Google map: goo.gl/maps/qGbpaZ1Ktw12
Closest Station: JR Fukushima Station
It's one stop away from JR Osaka Station on the Loop Line.
Special thank you to TKP and the building owners for allowing me to film inside the building.

I’m guessing that was the whole point. Making the highway the tenant means the owner gets a regular payment from the government for the highway going through their land which is fair enough. I would think that this means that Japan doesn’t have eminent domain laws otherwise the government would have just repossessed the property and gave the owner bugger all in compensation.

Osaka: We have a highway going through a building Chongqing: *Hold my monorail* Line 2 of Chongqing's transit system has a station called Liziba. Like the Gate Tower and the Hanshin Expressway, the building and Line 2 were both built at the same time. Also like the infrastructure in Osaka, the monorail on Line 2 was made in Japan, made by Hitachi. To make sure station noise wasn't a problem, they built in specialized noise reduction equipment to make sure you wouldn't hear the station from the residences or vice versa

What makes John's videos go from good to fantastic is the fact that he doesn't just show you what you came for, he also shows other cool things that aren't exactly related to the topic but are still fascinating. For example in this video, he doesn't just go through the gate tower building, he also goes through it in a unique and funky looking car as well as showing the Umeda sky building near bye. It's like reverse click bait where they show what you came for at the last few minutes and the rest of the video is about random crap that isn't anywhere near as interesting as what you came for. The fact that John does the exact opposite of that is one of the main reasons why I subscribed to the Channel! Keep putting the dedication you do in your videos john, your high quality content is more than worth the wait!

What a fun little episode. I love how Japan always takes initiative to do unique things, like this compromise. In America, they likely would have just built the highway around the building, making a story like that dispute fade away into history with nary a mention. This video really highlights that, along with the one about Eshima Ohashi Bridge. :-)

Have seen 2 other examples; but not as artistic or sound proof as this... In NYC an old elevated railway went thru one side of a building and has been converted into a popular pedestrian stroll and joggers run, with masses of trees and tall grasses .... In Montreal they widened downtown St. Catherines street and put 2 lanes thru the bottom floors of a handsome old building .... Osaka seems to be making max use of every square inch. In fast speed all these layers and levels of trains and cars moving look very futuristic .... Japan's tourism board should be hiring John Daub, if they haven't already .. He's finding fascinating things no one has ever shown, and has a sense of how best to video it. Like doing the bridge from a bicycle,. Don't think I have ever seen such masterful use of modern camera gadgetry. ... Am seeing here one thing we could learn from Japan: that by building elevated roads and railways 4 to 8 stories high, not too many lanes, it leaves much more light at street level . In US and Europe it is too often a creepy, dark no-man's land under elevated transport, too squat and too wide ... and much of it being removed, or the public preventing that style of construction altogether
