Actually only 23km is underwater, the longest underwater tunnel is the one in the English Channel which is 38km from England to France. But I think over all (including non-underwater segments) the Seikan is longer.

Not all are like that. Some trains are not as nice as others...

The JR tourist train pass is great, you can ride all the Shinkansen you want!

@@jean-lucpicard3012 It's roughly €230 for a week, up to €460 for 3 weeks if purchased in advance. 10% more if you buy it when you get to Japan. Unlimited travel on all JR trains (with a few minor exceptions). If your travel plans involve 2 or more Shinkansen train trips a week it is worth it. Even if not city hopping it made day trips to cities up and down the line easy. If you buy though the JR website you can also now book train tickets online which beats waiting in line at the service counter.

Ahh, I thought it was because it's inside a tunnel and air and sound dynamics play a major part in safety and stability, so it has to limit its speed.

It does have to do with aerodynamics inside the tunnel but it wouldn't be as much as a problem without other trains using the tunnel.

I live here that is one of the first things I noticed living here as a kid 30 years ago now I’m back for good. The public trains as well I noticed the other day were clean even during a heavy rain storm no foot prints or musty smell. Unlike my home town of NYC. When the travel ban lifts come visit, It is sad not to see tourists. I was by Tokyo station the other day it was packed but no foreigners. It’s sad people are missing out on a wonderful life experience. You will see why I chose to make japan my home permanently.

@@breakingdragon22 I was born and raised in NYC as well, so you can relate to what I'm talking about. An absolute disgrace. I love Japanese people, hard working honorable people. I follow a few of the monkey parks in Japan, including the snow monkeys, such a beautiful country. I'm planning a 10 day visit, there are so many things I want to see, and buy. I love Asian inspired decor. I'm also impressed with the ferry boats I've seen on this channel, the accommodations are unbelievable.

@@marianneturner7267 my friend just sent me some pictures from Central Park I don’t recognize the skyline in NYC (looked like planet Krypton). it’s not the city that inspired me to seek out culture. when I grew up in NYC it was an incredible time. Now NY looks like Dubai all flash no substance. Japan is absolutely incredible it reminds me of old NY in many ways. There are still mom and pop shops, A sense of community and most important culture is retained. The same can be said for Europe as well (Andalusia Spain next to japan is my favorite place on the planet from Sevilla to Cadiz you must go). You will need more than 10 day’s. I would suggest you come between October to March. That way you can go up north to see the Snow monkeys (I would recommend flying up north it’s cheaper and only an hour). For the hot springs “Hakone” close to Tokyo and you can take the train and see the land scape of Japan. The monkeys are up north from Aomori to Hokkaido. Then there is the Shikoku islands I went last year. Absolutely incredible. You get on a ferry and island hop. Having gone to the HS of Art and Design I went to an island of artists (Naoshima) it was better than the MET. As for the food everything here from traditional Japanese to Middle Eastern and beyond will take your breath away and it’s cheap. You will pay $15 for a high end Gourmet meal here instead of going to Balthazar’s and spend $90 for high end diner food. The only thing I miss is my Cuchi Fritos and Mojo Rojo in the Bronx by Yankee stadium. Please let me know if you need any information on where to go and what to do in Japan I’ll be happy to help.

You're right about the old neighborhoods in NY, everybody knew each other, and you knew the people that owned all the small shops, and they knew you. I love the old architecture instead of the steel and glass that has replaced them. I grew up in a pre-war building, high ceilings, beautiful moldings, wood floors, etc.. My parents lived there for 50 years, and I know the next tenant ripped all that out, very sad. You're right, old NY did inspire you to seek out culture. I use to love going to Chinatown and Little Italy. My Dad would drive us down to Little Italy on Sundays for fresh baked bread, still hot out of the oven. Chinatown had authentic items from China, now it's just cheap t-shirts and scarves that you can buy on any street corner. October to March works for me, don't like the heat and all the crowds on Summer vacation. I like to walk and see things, really experience the culture and the way they live in their country. I went to Italy a few years ago, Venice and Florence, I had more fun walking away from the tourist areas, seeking out different things to see. And I'm way past waiting on line for an hour to see a church or museum, I like to keep moving. That's probably the old New Yorker in me.

I took this Hayabusa Shinkansen from Shin Hakodate to Omiya in 2017 and I remember being impressed by that same view coming into Morioka Stn and thinking I wish I had the time to get off there.

Well Canada is the 2nd largest country in area and Japan's got a pop of 127,000,000 all withn the size of California. Pop density matters regarding the convenience of public transportation. Still, Japan does things better than most countries.

Is because the pandemic, wasn't that before.

Nice to visit advanced countries where they have cleanliness, order, discipline, high speed railways, advanced roads etc. Unlike some 3rd World countries, constantly debating wether to spend money on the nhs or the high speed railway project, or building new roads and houses.

Could have spent the money on the nhs! Could have spent the money on feeding the poor families struggling with the cost of living crisis Destroyed areas of outstanding beauty! All this in order to save 10 minutes! Just leave earlier!! We don't want high speed railways!!

I always wonder if my bullet train is a brand new one when I get onboard to go home from the airport, and it takes me few days to remember and to get used the cleanliness standard in Japan again :-)

Well the fact is that is ¥10000 cheaper to fly from almost any airport in Japan to New Chitose than take a supposed Shinkansen from Sendai to Sapporo much much more Tokyo or Osaka. Not to mention faster travel times flying.

@@TheBaldr It is very poor that JR East cut the night trains to Tohoku and Hokkaido after introducing the Hokkaido Shinkansen. Though the carriages were getting to the end of their life, they were popular trains and efficient for getting people up to and from Sapporo the next day. JR just gave all those kind of customers to the airlines especially since the Hokkaido shinkansen only goes as far as Hakodate (and not even into that city as such). I got the impression JR East had a similar short-sightedness towards the night trains as DB and SNCF had when they got rid of all/most of their night trains. It's interesting that he French govt has realised it's mistake and SNCF has recently reintroduced many night train routes in France.
