Sometimes you just gotta get the boys together and escape communism.
"In 1950, CSA became the world's first victim of a mass hijacking. Three Czechoslovak Douglas DC-3 airliners flown to an American airbase in Erding, near Munich, stirred the world on both sides of the "burnt through" Iron Curtain and the case intensified the Cold War between East and West overnight. On the morning of 24 March the three aircraft landed near Munich instead of at Prague; the first from Brno, at 08:20, the second from Moravská Ostrava at 08:40, and the third one from Bratislava at 09:20. Two-thirds of the people on board were involuntary passengers who later returned to Czechoslovakia. The Czechoslovak Communist government commissioned a 'flight to freedom' book, stage play, and film (all bearing the name Kidnap to Erding) which celebrated the kidnapped returnees as heroes who had not allowed themselves to be swayed by promises of capitalist opulence. The non-returnees who requested political asylum in West Germany were, on the other hand, proclaimed criminals and the Prague government vigorously requested their extradition - although in vain. The pilot from Brno was Josef Klesnil, a former Royal Air Force pilot with 311 squadron, who flew from Brno to Erding with a pistol at his head."

There's a long history of the glorious dictatorship of the proleteriat using tyrannical capitalist goods, particularly cars and trains. When the Soviet Union was first formed, they had no motor industry and most of their cars/trucks were bought from ford, particularly the TT trucks. During the war they were flooded with Willy's, and Studebaker Duces as well as more Fords. This is when they were first tooling up sufficient industry to build cars and they based a lot of subsequent design on those american made vehicles. This led to things like their own copy of the Timken two piece axle housing being used for decades after it was abandoned in the US. And later on a lot of their (and china) luxury/executive cars used motors bought from ford, and the GAZ Chaika is rather famously a direct copy of the 1955 Packard. This extended to locomotives too. There were a great deal of wartime exports to the soviet union, as well as peacetime purchases. This was ended in the late 40's rather famously with the "Little Joes" built by baldwin, which the government stopped the sale of, and they ended up being sold to the Milwaukee line. Which I'm glad for, as they're impressive things and a couple survive in good operational condition today.

I was a journalist in the Navy (great work if you can get it) and had the opportunity to interview a gentleman who escaped from the former USSR just before the wall came down. A few details I remember include him swimming across the Danube river in the winter because there were fewer security patrols. Later in his journey he encountered a patrol but managed run and evade them, though they did shoot at him several times. I do not recall the Soviet bloc country he escaped from, but he said he also had to make it through the country which bordered it, because if he was caught there they would send him back. He kept moving south and, after crossing a mountain range, mustered the courage to ask someone where he was at. He was told he was in Italy and safe. He eventually made his way to the U.S. and joined the Navy.

As a Czech myself its very interesting to hear about this. Never heard of this story even tho ive been on a few celebrations of 30 years of freedom from comunism with plenty of stories, this one is much more interesting though. Also an interesting fact ,allthoug most of the nation is against comunism history teachers are scared to talk about it at all, or they shorten everything down to the bare minimum for some reason, so i have to learn about almost anything from the communist era using youtube. So basicaly, youre doing us a public service. Thank you

Thank you for covering this story. As for a Czech person, its a very moving one, as there was thousand and thousands of Czechoslovaks attempting to escape, but to no prevail. To point some interesting ones, there were some who used hot air baloons, others used trains. The bigeest Heroes are the Mašín brothers, who story of struggle troughout Czechoslovakia and East Germany all the way to Berlin on foot is just simply crazy.

Greetings from Bratislava! Nice to see video about my country. Qxir is right, hijacking was a commonplace during communism. One friend of my grandfather even secretly build his own plane in the barn. Other took whole family into the air-balloon. Not all escapes were so lucky, once some teenagers were shot in the plane because they took a pity on StB agent and let him escape ... he then gunned them down. Also about that skater and her mom. Aja Vrzánova, is also quite interesting story, I read about her last month. She barely escaped while being chased by StB agents.

I usually just listen at bed time, but tonight Im watching, and let me just say - the subtle blue & red to differentiate which were defectors and which werent - 👌 amazing!! Also, thank you for including what happened to the pilots that had to go back for their families. Other channels would've just ended once the planes landed at the American base. But as soon as you said they had to go back for their families i immediately wanted to know what their fate was. 😔 Sucks one of them was caught with their family and imprisoned. 😥

Very interesting stories and amazing bravery on the part of these people. If anyone wants to know more about the Czechoslovak RAF pilots, the movie "Dark Blue World" delves into their lives during WW2. My family's escape from Czechoslovakia was not so dramatic (standard Yugoslavian holiday then bugger off to a free country ploy), but my parents were also sentenced to X amount of years in prison. They were of course pardoned (as were all escapees) after the commie scum was driven out and we were given our citizenship back.
