For this video we're taking a trip down under the sea. And staying there...
"The nuclear-powered Oscar-class submarine Kursk (Russian: Project 949A Антей Atomnaya Podvodnaya Lodka "Kursk" (APL "Kursk")) sank in an accident on 12 August 2000 in the Barents Sea, during the first major Russian naval exercise in more than ten years, and all 118 personnel on board were killed. The crews of nearby ships felt the initial explosion and a second, much larger, explosion; yet the Russian Navy did not realise that an accident had occurred and did not initiate a search for the sub for more than six hours. Because the submarine's emergency rescue buoy had been intentionally disabled during an earlier mission, it took more than 16 hours to locate the sunken boat.
Over four days, the Russian Navy repeatedly failed in its attempts to attach four different diving bells and submersibles to the escape hatch of the submarine. Its response was criticised as slow and inept. Officials misled and manipulated the public and news media, and refused help from other governments. President Vladimir Putin initially continued his vacation at a seaside resort; he authorised the Russian Navy to accept British and Norwegian offers of assistance after five days had passed since the accident. Seven days after the sinking, British and Norwegian divers finally opened a hatch to the escape trunk in the boat's flooded ninth compartment but found no survivors. The Government of Russia and the Russian Navy were intensely criticised over the incident and their responses."

This does seem harsh but unlike the people who died on that sub, the blatant lies and ignorance you spewed out of your mouth to make that video about William Cooper deserves all my disdain. You are trash to me. A worthless insect who opened his mouth and spoke blatant disinformation.

The joys of overreaching govt's. They don't care, people are just in their way if they actually question their wrongdoing. Wish I could say this stuff was over with, but even in the nicest terms it's just been replaced with tazers and mobs of security who pummel people who question their wrongdoings. In the bad places I guarantee it still goes on.

Russian state channels that even post on YT have that part "missing." My guess is to keep the Russian people from knowing or getting angry. I understand the survivors' lack of enthusiasm for trying their luck in the escape trunk. The depth the Kursk was at was very marginal to survive a buoyant ascent to begin with. (400 feet is considered about the maximum 'safe' depth you can try it, but it was said you could push it as deep as 600 feet.) How do you get out through the escape trunk? Good question. Since you will never overcome the force on the hatch with the differential pressure against you, you have to pressurize the trunk with that of the sea at that depth in order to equalize the pressure and allow you to get the hatch open. Which at 500 feet is ~220 PSIG. Now you have less than a minute to ascend to the surface, exhaling the whole time so yours lungs don't rupture. (Say good bye to your eardrums, my little nublets.) If you don't die in the process, congratulations: you're bobbing in the freezing Barents sea, and no one even knows to come look for you. Never get out of the boat.

I watched the Seconds From Disaster (great series go find the episodes) episode on Kursk. The guy in charge of the reactors stayed at his post to prevent a situation similar to what happened on K-19 from happening. He was found dead, still at the controls during the recovery effort. Kursk infuriates me because there was just error after error, from not giving a shit that a sub hadn't surfaced, to dragging their heels and taking their sweet ass time before they actually did anything, to all the botched attempts at recovery. Those men's death was utterly meaningless and showed incompetence at every level of authority.

It was a military sub. Therefore no one will accept help from an officially unallied side. The same like US has refused help from Russia and several other countries in extinguishing massive forest fires in California almost a decade ago, since the fire was taking places also in military territories. It's logical and correct from the standpoint of system protection. And safety of any country is a system. Talking about the system. Military personnel are a part of the system. And the military personnel is also giving an oath. By giving the oath they make clear that they will uphold the military charter. One of the parts of it is to protect and maintain the secrecy. That comes even at a cost of life, by the way. So... Those were military sailors. They were fulfilling the duty. You may also see on all the footages, that the relatives of those deceased sailors are usually also military officers. And the only ones going crazy are the mothers and wives, who usually tend to let their emotions loose. Whereas fathers - usually calm and with proper posture. They know very well what the duty is. Even if it is sad for them to lose a son. May those sailors rest in peace. They are on eternal sail in the sea.

This would make a great tense slow burn horror movie. A normal standard practice gone wrong and men who just moments ago thought they would be back home soon now thrown into tragedy. They would have to make a good 2/5ths of the movie getting you attached to some characters and making you feel for them so the initial explosion would be so tragic. Minimal character introduction for those who survive the initial explosion so they can build character later on while huddled together trying to survive. Paint them in the best light possible and make them all seem like the good men they must have been. No bad guy or antagonists, just good men met with tragic circumstance.

@floatingchimney
@floatingchimney 3 жыл бұрын
@@shadowxxe Exactly. Lack of oxygen and more carbon dioxide does not feel like simply "slipping into sleep". First symptom would be shortness of breath, you would fill as if you can't take a good deep breath, even though you're trying. Your body would enter a hypercapnic state (high CO2 in blood) which would cause you to breathe rapidly, your heart beat rate would skyrocket, you would feel strong anxiety as if you were suffocating and not being able to breathe, the panic would be terrible. Eventually you'd start convulsing while at the same time being conscious, and only then you'd pass out.

USS Arizona is similar to HMS Thetis in that there were men trapped inside who were running out of air, the difference was that the Arizona was entirely submerged and with no way to hoist the battleship out of the water the only way to get at the men inside would be to cut through the hull and if they did that it would then drown the men from the ingress of water. There was no feasible way to get the men out of the Arizona alive so all they could do was tell those working nearby to ignore the banging coming from the battleship as reacting to it would just give the doomed men inside false hope. Thetis on the other hand was an act of cruelty, because the stern of the submarine was above the water it was deemed possible to cut into the sub to rescue the men inside - the admiralty said no, because war with Germany was on the horizon and the intact submarine was considered more vital than it's crew.

This reminded me of the U-103. This U-Boat is famous for having been sunk by the RMS Olympic (Titanic's older sister ship and the only ship in her class not to sink. Her story is super underrated.) On the 12th of May in 1918, U-103 spotted the Olympic and attempted to torpedo her. Something went wrong, however, and they were unable to fire which caused them to be spotted by the Olympic. At that time, the Olympic had been outfitted with deck guns and her gunners opened fire on the sub before Olympic was turned towards the sub. U-103 attempted to dive to avoid damage, but the Olympic rammed her and her propeller sliced through U-103's hull just behind the conning tower. The crew had no choice but to blow her ballast tanks and abandon her, the entire ordeal causing nine crewmen to lose their lives. The Olympic didn't pick up the survivors, but the SS Davis did when they saw their flare. EDIT: Fixed vague language.

From what I understand, the Russian rescue subs made several attempts to connect to the escape hatch, but their equipment was outdated, Soviet-era rescue equipment (dubious quality at best) and not well maintained. It was nigh impossible for the operator to hold position over the hatch and even when they did, it wouldn't seal. They didn't have very many opportunities either because the batteries couldn't hold much of a charge. I think they could only make like 3 or four passes before the batteries were depleted.

Umm, read about the black sea flagship the Moskva readiness report. Those ship are floating steel duck, not a warship. Most of weapons are rendered useless because of corruption, couldn't use anti air when radar are on.

That is one enormous submarine. I'm amazed they were able to recover it. Condolences to the families - what an awful thing to go through. I hope lessons were learned from this that will prevent future disasters of this kind.
