I think when, 1. You've cheated before and gotten away with it, 2. There are stakes involved in competition, 3. Cheating cannot easily be proven... Then the motivation is there along with a nice risk-benefit analysis. Dlugy has a bit to gain, too. There is no proof of cheating, but every behavioral element is there to support conditions for cheating.

There is a way to know. If its a mole as Magnus suspects then simply not sharing his strategy and playing him again without having planned his game with a potential leak. If he's using a bot and not a leak it will indeed be hard to catch him if he is. Hans clearly does not tell the truth in his public statements and he is still young and as a young person cheating in some cases is less serious in their minds because they watched the extreme hypocrisy of previous generations.

Chess is a game that depends on personal integrity (a lot like golf) and the presence of cheaters really ruins the game for everyone. Whether Hans cheated or not almost doesn't matter, it's his history and dishonesty surrounding cheating that's hard to overlook.

If u are convicted for steal u are not propably get work based on high trust (Bank, Jewelerry Store etc). He was caught 2 times, but statement of cheescom says that there was more. And he was cought on tournament with $ prize, cmon. There is no such big diff between playin on board than online. Even if we dont have hard proof, there is enough ways to think that way that he was cheating, many times. And there is no reason to just forget and let him play. There is a lot of games in which he can compete.

@@PotatoL001 What does any of that have to do with Magnus? You play who they put in front of you and if you want to resign like this you should be disqualified from the tournament, period. FIDE needs to implement a rule exactly as such so a shit show like Magnus has created cannot happen in the future. I am sure they have procedures if you think you have been cheated or you think a player is cheating. Is Magnus now above those procedures? Wow what a spoiled brat and how old is he now? Disgrace

For what it's worth I feel that Magnus resigning on move 2 is a direct response to Hans earlier statement saying in an interview that the chess speaks for itself. 😔

No Hikaru. There was security scans before the Hans match just not as rigorous. I remember even Magnus being scanned before the Hans match for example.

So I guess each player needs to be stripped naked before a tournament, given a chess robe/slippers, have their heads shaved, thorough cavity search, body scan, and drug screening before playing. Should also check for AI contact lenses and potential devices in the teeth. Players shouldn't face each other to be safer because of possible psychological manipulation. Basically chess prison. One more thing, players shouldn't know who they are facing.

What are the frequencies the wand picks up? It doesn’t mean the device is broadcasting…it might only receive. It also might not turn on for a set time…. I don’t know enough about the detection device to believe it helps.

ok - so we will see rectal examinations in those top tournaments before the game ??? @GMHikaru: what do you think ? btw: those scanners can be manipulated electronicly (this is necessary so that secret services can get their employees through such scans undetected - all you need is a device that sends certain frequencies to the scanner.) And the other thing is, of course, that there are already technologies that do not require metals - such transmitters and receivers are not recognized by these devices anyway.

A possible way would that since the games are played on DGT boards, the moves on there could be broadcasted to sockfish. But the engine must have been tiny.. lol. After that Hans - Magnus game, they added a delay to the broadcase which would make that impossible.

@@nouhorni3229 yes but that opening was expected because XQC was studying that line and Hikaru was training him. There was a reason for him to know the line XQC was going to play. In this situation Hans picked a line to study that Magnus has only played once. That's pretty suspcious. At the end of the day I'm neutral on this, but Hans' reputation preceded him, there are consequences for wrongs that are done, that doesn't mean that you can't come back from it and maybe Hans has, but at the end of the day you still have to earn back that trust, so it isn't surprising to see that Hans wasn't believed.

I don't get the searching the shoes thing. I mean, if it can be hidden in the shoe, it can be put in your underwear or groin region. No one is going to strip them down completely naked or give a rectal or vaginal exam. With technology getting even smaller, and with women having tampons or other stuff they could easily insert or hide something in their body cavities. Even between breasts or anything. In such cases like that, what can they do? They just need to get past the checks, and then once inside, they can just go toilet and take it out of their body cavities and then set it up properly or turn it on. Or like if they had to hide it in something else to get past the metal detectors. I dunno how the tech works, but maybe wrap it in something like how a faraday cage blocks wireless signals.

Hans learned from an insider of Magnus’ circle the opening Magnus would play. Magnus had doubts about this spy so he chose a very rare opening. When he saw that Hans came prepared for that opening, he knew there was a spy and that’s why he quit.

Hes always chewing something. So a bone mic would work and would be very difficult to detect. Furthermore, your could safely swallow it when no longer required. Make it a digital DMR reciever and it would be almost impossible to detect. Thats how I would do it.

What is the right way to accuse someone of cheating? Magnus could have said nothing including the tweet….if it was a legal issue. He could have stayed quiet and worked it out with the Saint Louis Chess club - no one would be assuming anything. He took such an immature approach.

Actually true. Carlsen already knew his history before that game… he could have protested and not play him at all if his reasoning was that he didn’t want to play people with a history of cheating. He only protested after he lost…
