I didn’t realize GM Benjamin came out the womb a chess grandmaster
@themediocrehunter41523 жыл бұрын
Everybody who is saying stuff like this doesn't understand Rawr Master's point. His point is that the FACE OF CHESS should be good at it. He has no problem with hikaru having s channel seven times as big as his, his problem is that he thinks chess will become ridiculed if we only see these shooter nuts playing it. Itd be like if you loved movies by a certain director, and then another director who is a terrible scriptwriter but had a lot of cash for special effects swooped in and took over the movie that you were looking forward to from the og director u wanted to see it made by. You'd be pretty pissed.
@loooongneck3 жыл бұрын
Dweet4life boi except that’s a terrible analogy because in your example something is taken away; the movie that you wanted to see never got made. Nothing is being changed about chess, the game is the same as it’s always been and has been for hundred of years. Also your example sucks ass because it’s not like Hikaru bought his way into Benjamin’s earned position that way you imply with the director analogy. Hikaru is also a chess GM and earned that title. Really no reason to think he’s going to open chess up to ridicule (whatever that means) unless you’re just letting personal feelings get in the way of rational thinking
@themediocrehunter41523 жыл бұрын
@@loooongneck but something is taken away. The beauty of the game is diminished when these clowns become the face of it. Hikaru can be the face of chess because he is great at the game. That's not where Ben's problem lies. His problem is that his beautiful game and even lifestyle is being reduced into this extra little pastime. Also I never said hilary is bad. He is many times better than Ben. He earned his title through blood sweat and tears. Ben is fine with hikaru being the face of chess and he is fine with new people joining. He just believes in working your way up the food chain and not being the most popular player but still one of the worst at it. And chess is being ridiculed if these clowns are the ones leading it. If hikaru, carlsen, rosen, ben, gotham, aronian, dubov, or any awesome player was the face of chess ben would have no problems. And as for what you've made clear, I feel like you're not really a chess player are you? You don't understand what the grind of rating is like. I know that I dont wanna hear this conversation. "Hey man, who's the most popular chess player?" "Pewdiepie right?" No! It's like how Marie Antoinette used go pretend to be a farmer and play around with animals. It's stupid, foolish, and anybody who is against ben on this clearly hasnt actually heard him talk. Charlie just decided to snip a few comments that he made regardless of context and used that to paint him as the villain. Come play chess seriously for four years, understand the community, then we will talk.
@loooongneck3 жыл бұрын
@@themediocrehunter4152 "these clowns" immediately your argument loses all rationale. Do you not see how opinionated that statement is? Who are you to judge whether someone is a clown or gatekeep the type of personality the "face of chess" is supposed to have? "the beauty of the game is diminshed" Lol no it isnt. Its a game. One can very easily get into chess and become a chess player and not interact with or have their interest in the game be influenced by streamers ever because not everyone is into watching streams. The only problem I see here is you taking things too seriously and personally attacking people you don't have a particular affinity for. And by the way, I do play chess. Just because im not as haughty taughty about it doesnt mean i dont know how to play or what the rating grind is like
@themediocrehunter41523 жыл бұрын
@@loooongneck okay you make some good points. These people, typically, are popular at their games because they're extremely good at them. And they're new, and that's fine. However,until they hit a point where they can competently play the game, I dont think that they should be referred to as professional chess players all the time because they stream it for money. Also ben finegold is a really great guy. He's hilarious and brilliant. It's not because I dislike these people's personalities or lack thereof, because I see hikaru as being a lot like them. Only difference, he is extremely good at chess.

It wasn't meant to be a historical documentation (as seen by the fact that the ending was the opposite of what actually happened), and I'm not gonna be a snob and interpret the meaning of the scene like some overpaid art critic, I don't know what the meaning of the scene was. I just know it was not meant to be taken seriously. I mean, Quentin Tarantino hasn't tackled many historical events with factual documentation (Inglorious Basterds, anyone?). @@cogcog5264 In case you didn't look it up, I'll try to explain it to you. GM Hikaru Nakamura and GM Eric Hansen of the Chessbrah KZfaq channel were playing a game online. Eric Hansen proceeded to flag Hikaru whereupon Hikaru flew into a rant of "I don't care, I literally don't care." Soon after this, Chessbrah was hit with a copystrike from Hikaru's channel. The copystrikes were done manually, meaning that it was someone from Hikaru's team who sent these strikes. This was his second. If he was hit with a third, Chessbrah would be deleted. Note that Chessbrah was the way that GM Hansen makes his income. This is obviously shitty behavior for someone like Hikaru, to potentially hurt someone's ability to support themselves over some petty grudge. I already knew how to play the game, but discovering how energetically he commentated the matches, while at the exact same time seeing the brilliance of Alpha Zero and how good deep chess can actually be, made me actually want to get better. I also had a phase where I enjoyed Benjamin Finegold's content, so it's a bit sad to see him be like this

This entire situation makes me feel bad. First I was happy and excited Hikaru broke into the gaming community with the increased viewership. Thought and still think this can do amazing things for chess and create opportunities for many chess streamers that wasn’t there previously. Then I started to get annoyed at Hikaru and his mods pandering to the gaming community and their spamming of immature memes(rendering chat completely useless). Then I got really annoyed when a bunch of two week old chess fans started meme’ing towards Magnus and talking all this trash that Hikaru was going to beat him and all that unoriginal/redundant malding silliness/cringe. Then things kinda came full circle today, after Magnus beat hikaru 3-0, Hikaru’s chat was trying to get him to see Magnus’ monkaS tweet he sent out when it was 2-0, Hikaru had an idea he wouldn’t like to see it and refused to check it out after a frustrating day of chess. Then chat seemed to convince him it was in response to Hikaru’s earlier tweet that day wishing Magnus good luck and Magnus interpreted Hikaru’s tweet as trolling, which is completely false). Hikaru said something along the lines of, “how is wishing your opponent good luck trolling?!?.. we were suppose to tweet about the event(I guess referencing part of the contract signed for this tournament).” It was in this moment I felt bad and remembered I’m a fan of Hikaru’s and felt like a jerk for picking sides against him even though it was his chat I was mostly annoyed at. All this drama was so unnecessary.
@andrewgoldstein62714 жыл бұрын
Also I would like to second/support what people are saying about Hikaru being a toxic elitist jerk in the past. Literally not even a year ago he was criticizing botez for commentating/analyzing his games saying something along the lines of lower rated players have no business analyzing the games/moves of super GMs. Hikaru was also criticized during the puzzle battle world championship for diminishing the accomplishments of those who beat him cause they weren’t real chess puzzles but silly memorization exercises. I think the people questioning his motives and the rhetoric of “growing chess” are justified(? Not sure if that’s the right word but hopefully you get what I’m saying). Another chat user said that this question of elitism in chess is essentially chessbae(notable mod) propaganda. I’d have to agree to that to an extent.

jason woods Lol, what? Hikaru still plays in top Rapid and Blitz tournaments. He’s still no. 1 in the World in Blitz, and I’m pretty sure his drop in Classical rating was due to him focusing on KZfaq and Twitch - not the other way around. I get that Hikaru wasn’t the most likeable character, but he’s definitely improved a lot much like Carlsen.

Ben teaches chess for a living. He owns a successful chess club in Atlanta, and he has hundreds of lectures available on the internet. This presumption that Ben despises new chess players is nonsense. I got introduced to chess by Ben’s videos, and it pains me to see him get this hate.

I agree with what Skrealder lord dude said, I'm quite confident that Ben does realize this. As to his other sentiments, I don't really agree with them, but I see where he's coming from. The modern idea of just aligning yourself with one side rather than being able to see a balanced perspective is so bullshit and is what causes a lot of this crap on the internet.

Ben's part of the tribe, so the love of money dictates his current morality. If giving lessons brings him the moolah, he's all for new players joining the game. If other grandmasters find a more effective way of monetizing their skill, he gets jealous and tries to drag them down. It's like an instinct to those people, you can't really get mad at Ben. It's like getting mad at a dog for eating a sausage that's been left on the table. He can't help it, it's his nature.

To become a grandmaster you don't have to be intelligent, all you need is a tremendous amount of discipline, a lot of practice against other strong players, work on your memory, work on your nerves and general competitive assets, and many, many years of hard work, but not intelligence or talent. To be top 10 though, that requires some pretty amazingly good traits like nerves of steel, huge energy and motivation, good memory, and a lot of talent, that don't equate to intelligence. Garry Kasparov once talked about this so you can look it up if you wanna go deeper on this. In the interview he said: "My talent is that I can work harder than the rest"
@randomname97233 жыл бұрын
@@DavidMartinez-ip1dr that's just not true that you don't have to be intelligent to be a GM. You have to be smart and intelligent, but not 500 IQ (meaning realistically like 140-160 IQ).

I like Ben, he literally got me into chess and he seems incredibly genuine and does a lot for the game with his teaching, videos, etc.. But there's a reason he apologized for those remarks. There's literally no problem with playing chess with internet celebrities to get more people into the game. As a frequent watcher of Ben, I don't think he was joking there, and would probably have said so in his apology if he was. Now cr1tikal was really overly harsh here but just because Hikaru is apparently (?) not nice [edit: HE FIGHTS PEOPLE???] doesn't mean he hasn't done a few things that are good or at least fine.

An apology... for what?
@soiherduliekvideoz3 жыл бұрын
@@sams7068 Ben said those things because he absolutely hates Hikaru, for many valid reasons, just like all of the other top chess players hate Hikaru. It goes a lot further than him starting fights with people, he's just a shitty and toxic person in general, which wouldn't be too out of the ordinary if he would ever actually own up to it. He's the last person who should be the face of chess for all of these new players, and I've no doubt he doesn't give a shit about growing the game and only cares about twitch $. Ben's comments on Xqc might have been unwarranted (though I can see how he might have gotten a bad impression if he watched an Xqc stream, he and his chat are insufferable), but the only reason he made the comments at all is because it was Hikaru blowing up, if it had been the Botez sisters or Eric Rosen or Magnus or basically any other chess player, Ben wouldn't have given a shit.
