Hi Giles, looked like another nice camp and some great food too. Some sage advice on doing a recce for future camping spots, it's always good to have a few locations in the back pocket. I've gone and got myself a Plash Palatka, will be taking it out for a camp over the Easter weekend. Many thanks as always for sharing and all the best 👍

Another fun video. Exploring new areas is always interesting. You never know what you might find. Nice sunset. I actually started watching this video Monday night, but had to hit the sack pretty early. Tuesday was General Elections here in the States and I’m an Election Judge, which meant I was up at 4:00am and didn’t get home until 9:15pm. Myself and nine other judges run a place where people from two precincts can vote. We had 1,010 voters cast their ballots between 6:00am and 7:00pm. So, I finished the video tonight. I try to imagine sleeping like you do. Might give it a try. Been kind of warm here, and tomorrow will be 75F, but starting Friday it’s going to get colder. Saturday low will be about 20F. I’m slowly working my way through your videos up to the present. Take care, Mate. 😊 And, happy 🏕 camping!

My cousin Karl-Heinz, who was in the NVA, once told me if they had to 'Schnell-Schlaf' (sleep quickly) they would use their zeltbahn as a bivy bag. You place it on the ground like a diamond; fold the foot end up and grip between your boots, then the left corner is pulled over your body and then the right corner and you hold that and roll onto your left side, curl up and (as all soldiers know) drop off to sleep immediately, no matter where you are. You had enough at the head end to pull over you head and give some cover against rain. If you add a thin wool blanket you can handle fairly cold temps and lying on your sheepskin would ease some of the lumps. You use your pack as a pillow. Not the comfiest of nights but of course soldiers are usually exhausted and able to sleep anywhere, anytime.I imagine you could also just wear the zeltbahn as a cape and curl up anywhere.
@gilesbinyon Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. Appreciate you watching as always and that’s a very interesting comment. Yeah, I have found that the Zeltbahn does, indeed, work as a bivvy of sorts. It helps that I am short - these capes seem to come in a little under 6’ square 💦😳. Thanks again - keep ‘stealthing’ 👍

Lovely Giles. Regarding your sleep system have you taken a look at the old Ozzie swag rolls not sure how heavy they are but the work like a bivvy bag but are usually made from cotton canvas I think the history is nearly everything is rolled and carried in the roll itself. I saw a chap called Scottys gone walkabouts KZfaq using the system. 👍
@sng22252 жыл бұрын
Scotty uses a swag I think from the UK which is quite expensive. Modern Aussie swags are designed for 4wd travel as they are quite bulky and heavy. But the benefit is fast setup with mattress built in. The Finnish guy Helsinkipop used a lighter option where he wraps a canvas sheet around a wool blanket. The traditional Aussie swag is very similar.

What is the water bottle you carry on your belt ? Where did you get it from great bit of kit
@gilesbinyon2 жыл бұрын
Thanks again Jay. The water bottle was bought on eBay sometime ago. It was cheap (about £12 I think). I think it was Swedish army - issued but in good condition. Hangs easily on the belt and not plastic. Cheers 👍

Maybe you could take a wool blanket for sleeping under I know there heavy item but much better than a sleeping bag atb
@gilesbinyon2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and good suggestion Jay. Yeah, I try out a cut down wool blanket in some other vids. As you probably know yourself - gear is always evolving! Take care 👍
@BinManSays872 жыл бұрын
Have you ever thought about getting a great kilt as it's just a huge woollen blanket at heart, there's a traditional Scottish KZfaqr who dose all sorts with natural resource the traditional way but it could give you a few good ideas for kit

Nearest thing to natural bivvy bag and waterproof that I have is made from Tyvek roofing paper.
@gilesbinyon2 жыл бұрын
Thanks John. That sounds like an interesting option - I like the thinking behind it. But I think some Tyvek products may contain synthetics like polypropylene etc ? 🤔 nothing is straightforward sometimes. Cheers 👍

Love watching you break wood between 2 close trees.I do this (& just stamping on branches too) way more than whipping out the fancy bushcraft saw that most KZfaqrs do! Isn't there some superstition about not sleeping near bluebells though?
@gilesbinyon2 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Sarah. Oh yes, breaking sticks is so much less labour intensive than sawing them up! Especially after a long days hiking ! Oh boy, 😨 don’t tell me about the dangers of sleeping near Bluebells !!! At this rate there will be no where left for me to bed down !!! 😉😂 Thx for your comment 😊👍

what is your criteria for a pit stop and brew, and what is your criteria for stopping overnight? Just curious.
@gilesbinyon2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment John. I normally just stop for a brew when I fancy it. But an overnighter is planned in order that I can cover more miles and explore some new places. For me the overnight experience gets you even closer to the landscape and nature. Cheers 👍

Ha, cap cut. I gave my daughter my phone to play with, she put that on so I decided to mess around with it too. Don’t think I’ve watch one of your videos right to the end (or maybe this is the only one you’ve edited with cap cut!) Anyway, looks like you had a great time!

Thanks very much Myles - appreciate you watching. Yeah, editing all done on CapCut - and apparently you can even remove that end watermark too …but I always forget !!! Cheers 👍

Some pretty trashed trees on this adventure. The wind on the South Coast can be so dangerous.

Hiya Joshua, thanks for your comment. I use home made fire lighters made of wax cotton wool pads. Easy to make and cheap and lightweight too 👍

If you're looking for some area to go wild camping come on over to Missouri in the United States we have over 6 million square kilometers of public owned land which is usable for dispersed camping, that's what we call wild camping.
@gilesbinyon Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Kokopelau. Missouri sounds fantastic for wild camping. So much more space in the US - wish we had more over here. I bet you can find real wilderness. Thanks again 👍

That's some serious tree damage. I really like how you do your camp fires. You don't have to worry too much about fire embers with non-synthetics. Was that a rocket stove you happened upon? I love your stuff, very engaging videos, been following you a while and noticed I wasn't subbed ooops, just subbed, thanks for sharing your adventures, it is greatly appreciated. If you get a chance check out #StealthCampingAlliance

Thank you very much for following the videos - it’s much appreciated. I think that metal L shaped box was some kind of old left behind ‘catch ‘em alive trap’ possibly used for animal survey work. But I’m not 100% sure and I didn’t want to fiddle with it in case it was still in use !!! (It did look like a rocket stove tho - so maybe….) Thx for the heads up but I already knew about the stealth campers alliance - I’m already subbed to yourself and also Day Tripper too. And recently subbed to Cosmic Camper as well. Thanks again and keep camping. Cheers 👍
