I've been enjoying these Gettysburg videos so much but this trek up Big Round Top really hit it out of the park for me because I remember when I was so much younger than today being up Big Round Top and up the old observation tower. It would have been 1964 or 65 on one of our family visits. My US Army officer father was a big Gettysburg fan, he'd made his first trip there in the late 1940s I think and my family made many visits as we moved around the country. So much has changed, so much has remained the same at Gettysburg. "On great fields, something stays."

My 4th great grandfather Michael J. Bulger commanded the 47th Alabama during the attack on Little Round Top. The 47th was flanking Col. Oats 15th Al., during the attack! He was 56 years old at the time! During the attack he was shot in the upper chest and was captured! Col. Chamberlain of the 20th Maine claims he captured him, however Col. James Rice made the claim also! Bulger said he owed he life to Col. Rice because of his care after being captured! Bulger passed away in 1900 at the age of 94, still carrying the bullet in his chest from Little Round Top!

I've hiked BRT numerous times, always when the leaves are on the trees. I just hiked it again this past weekend. The view is even more amazing when the trees are bare.

I'm a Pennsylvanian currently in exile in California. Just seeing our trees (a green and lushness not available anywhere else) and that crystal clear beauty of a hot July day does me good. And that I couldn't go to Gettysburg this year to pay homage to our Pennsylvania men of the Battle of Gettysburg. I always owe a mention to the statue of the Zoave at the Angle. Thank you, thank you for this visit and the outstanding commentary.

Since the tower is gone - send a drone up from the old base to 75 feet and hover. Add that image to the battlefield app.

In reference to "Gibraltar" ... What would Rodes be defending against? The Federals weren't attacking, they were defending.

Interesting people loved the Big Roundtop Tower but hated the Gettysburg National Tower.
@mjciavola
@mjciavola 4 жыл бұрын
That may have been because the BRT tower was at the extreme edge of the battlefield and therefore not as much of an eyesore as the other tower that was right in the heart of battlefield AND twice as tall.

@@mjciavola Great points. It might also be too because the National came at a time of peak commercialism around the park whereas the BRT was around for decades prior. Reading some of the pieces about the GNT in the 80s it seemed to be a symbol of commercialism run amok at the battlefields.

Thanks for this video and the reason I am saying that Is because I am really interested in the Pennsylvania reserves and their part in stopping the confederate advance of generals William Tatum Wofford Joseph Brevard Kershaw Paul Jones Semmes of Lafayette Mclaws division of Longstreets corps and the brigade of George Thomas Anderson aka tige Anderson of John bell hoods division but I am also interested in the Pennsylvania reserves because one of my 4x great uncles named George E Kitzmiller served in company k of the first Pennsylvania reserves infantry regiment which was formed in Gettysburg and just saying but the land on which the 20th Maine fought on was the property of my 4x great grandfather Jacob weikert

Drives me insane how tubby pronounces Gettysburg
@AmericanBattlefieldTrust
@AmericanBattlefieldTrust 2 жыл бұрын
While "Gettys-burg" has become the more popular pronunciation, the town was named after Samuel Gettys, pronounced "Gettis." Thus, some historians and locals prefer the "Gettis-burg" pronunciation. It's not worth getting worked up over, we promise. (This is a channel for education, not insults).

good stuff but I have a possible suggestion. That as the decades go by a person can become desensitized to the fact you basically are walking all over dead bodies. I suggest as a possible option to start thinking about it untill you finalize something--put a leader at the start of each one something like "hallowed ground thousands died here as you watch us explain things".. the beginning of each video then fades in.. the videos are a bit maniacal.. just some constructive suggestions. you can even make a mention at some point near the start "it is very hard to explain this stuff if people insist we have to be walking around crying with our heads bowed"--anyway there are some options. the videos are too cold and maniacal ultra good info--nobody expects you to be perfect but I do think the videos will mature. remember there is valium thats what certain drugs are for
