Part 1 of our 3 days hiking and wild camping trip to the Cairngorms in Scotland. The weather was brutal at times. Mother Nature threw at us wind, torrential rain and it was a little nervy when the thunder and lightning joined the party on the second night. I don't recommend camping in a storm. If it had been on the forecast we wouldn't have gone ahead with the trip.
My Terra Nova Southern Cross 1 tent performed superbly though. I do have a discount code and link below to save you a few quid on the Terra Nova/Wild Country website.
Use code PAULM20 to get 20% off all other full price items on the Terra Nova website www.terra-nova.co.uk/?aff=624

The Highlands are totally unforgiving (in my experience), which is exactly why I've not been camping there for over 20 years. Some folks still head up there in winter, which is far more bonkers than can be imagined. Similar to the higher Hymalayas (probably). Such areas are simply not fit for human habitation.

The rain and wind are whatever. Is lighting a worry though? Seems like humans would be a good object for the lighting to hit in a big open area

That looked thoroughly....miserable 😁 I can take extreme heat & extreme cold whilst camping but the one thing I simply detest is the rain and the horrible, insidious dampness that comes with it, it just makes everything so much hard work. You can try and keep things dry but no matter what you do, in the end, the damp & wet will eventually win.

Walking, Hiking and camping used to be free in Scotland as passed by the Scottish Parliament until they licenced Loch Lomond and Trossachs Park to charge people for camping in the area they control thus taxing the people of Scotland for the Freedom to Roam, the area they control get's bigger every year. Time it was stopped and give us our right to roam back. Freedom for Indigenous Scots.

Plenty of people using the Durston X-Mid in Iceland ;) Seems to be very solid with a couple of simple mods and an extra guyline on each peak for security (and saves a kg backpack weight and costs half the price - if those are a consideration) :) You should have given yours a work-out Paul - I'd love to seen how it handled that storm in Part 2 !

I always enjoy watching your hiking and wild camping adventures, and they always inspire me to head out hiking and visit different areas of the country! Wow, that is some crazy weather. Its great to see how you pack up in the rain though. It's rather an art. Whenever I'm out in stuff like that, I'm reminded that wild camping is every bit a psychological activity as it is a physical. The mind can go many places when hiking in weather like that. Looking forward to part 2!

Very wet . Not used to that now I live on the Sierra Contraviesa Spain .Even on Navada on the other side of the valley we rarely get wet .A combination of low rainfall and being able to pick and choose my days to avoid stuff like that. Was a bit of a shock to the system last month in Kyrgyzstan being rained on . We were lucky and most of the rain was in the evening after we had pitched. We had a lot of cold rivers to cross as there was Glacier melt mixed in with the rain run off . Back from when I was younger and had to do all weather stuff and river crossings had learnt that you need an accidental immersion/ hypothermia plan when out in conditions like that. If the situation occurs you have little time to sort it and your brain doesn't work well so worth having an immediate action plan. You mentioned the altitude. I had forgotten how low the UK is till Kyrgyzstan. The other multi national group has I was with work in London and struggling with the altitude. We were camping between 3000mtrs and 3600mtrs and hit 4000mtrs . Quite a few weeks suffering altitude sick. I was pretty OK as it was summer I had been spending a lot of time accros the valley on the Navada tops with 3000mtrs camps. (My house is at 920 and the nearest bar 1280mtr ) Was interested in your tent as could do with something between bivi and my Trango 3 . Thanks for your videos I very much enjoy watching them .

Great trip and footage so far. I liked your gear selections as well... appears suitable, up to standards reliable, and par for the course. My day was swabbing and inspecting whitewater rafts & catarafts. Work entails high attention to detail, check listing, and redeployments outfitting boating and camping gear for multi-day Moose and Bison fly-out remote destination float hunts throughout Alaska. Today... supposed to have two scheduled fly-outs by float plane... however weather delayed grounded due to blowing 40-50mph and waves of sideways rains. I liked the two-cone stove accessory... those take a while to build, and optimally nest a given/specific pot selection. Looking forward to part 2.

Brilliant. Im camping regularly in Scotland and Ive realised that its basically just about balancing a few simple factors ..... 1. You need to pack the lightest load possible to deal with the forecasted weather. 2. The weather forecast is usually wrong 3. The weather might do different things every every few hours. Its a beautiful nightmare. My best advice to anyone hiking and camping in Scotland is ... Take an umbrella (laugh all you like but you will eventually thank me ....) Plan to be hot, wet, and cold, in the same day. Possibly the same hike Get a very lightweight breathable poncho. (It might save your clothes, tent or gear, from water) ALWAYS take protection from both insects and sun. Think like a marine. EVERYTHING you take needs to be packed in a way that protects it from water. Scotland is one of the best places on earth to hike and camp. It is also one of the few places on earth where you might be drenched, battered by wind, snowed on, and sunburned, in the same trip. Good luck all.

Good to see you all out and about.. 😉I noted the colour of the water you took up from the stream et.. FOR NEWBIES in particular.. DO YOUR research.. on drinking water et from outdoor sources et BE VERY VERY careful as some rivers / water places can be contaminated with phosphates, pesticide run off AND other miscellaneous contaminants, high alkaline (decidedly not good for you.. water.) We've ALWAYS taken chlorine tabs with us AND decent filters et.. 👀Be aware that some water can contain tiny microbes.. As said, DO YOUR research!! FLOWING water is usually far better than STILL water especially re ponds et /puddles!

Reminds me of the days I went touring on a bike. packing everything into my pannier bags took a bit of time, then you realised you needed something at the bottom of the bag so out everything had to come again to get to it lol. I cycled with shorts and T-shirt, if it rained yes you got soaked but soon dried again on the downhills and you got a shower at the same time - Will be watching for your next leg of the journey, stay safe, happy hiking - Subscribed
