brings back lots of good memories first climbed whitney on mothers day 1981 a big snow year later many more times including the east face and east buttress. i even took my son and daughter up the mountaineer's route when my son was 20 and my daughter was 13. it seemed easier back then than you guys show. but i will say you did a good job of showing how much hard work is involved to get to the top. BUT WORTH IT RIGHT?? you guys should try to climb all 15 peaks over 14,000 feet in ca. i did it and i think i have the record for taking the longest 1981 to 2017!!

Great video, I laughed so hard when you realized you could park closer and your reaction to your pack being 50 lbs. Thanks so much for posting! going end of April.

On the ledges it might be wise to drop your packs and hoist them using ropes. That is too much weight to throw you off balance.

Thanks for sharing, that must have been pretty unreal to experience. I think I would have turned back at the chute lol

I just did this route for the 2nd time in September. It looks way more suss in the snow. Congrats on your summit!

Sweet, my register sheet was still up from 3/25/2022 (first row)! 🤙 Less snow for me on the last 400’, and roped up with a pro guide both up and down, nicely done unroped! 👏

Great vid, friend, gives me a great preview of what to expect, my attempt will be this weekend! There doesn't appear to be much snow at high elevation, but this year has been awfully dry so its to be expected.

Ha, I failed! we made it to the notch, but we had bad weather and had to turn back since it was getting late and we didn't want to go down the col in the dark. I'll be back to try again next year though!

Whitney does not get that much snow or it lots melts by June when I went.
@wilm2109

@@KillroyX99 Yeah, plus the drought isn't helping. I was there in April 15-17th to attempt mountaineer's route, first day was gorgeous, second day a storm blew in and we got dusted with snow and high winds, stayed at camp the entire day. Because of the delay, we weren't able to move up to Iceberg lake as initially planned, this caused us to lose too much time.
@KillroyX99
@KillroyX99 2 жыл бұрын
@@wilm2109 , The year I summited was a big snow year for the Sierra, and even though it was rapidly melting in June, there was a fair amount of snow hiking on Muir pass, Forester pass, ect, but Whitney did not have any snow on the normal hiking trail. Whitney just collects snow in the low sun exposure areas.

Nice vid! After having done it, is down climbing the final 400 fine or should i do the traverse on the way down?

Once you hit 14K, you move about 100 feet at a time. Lack of “O’s.”

Thanks for the video! you guy did a day hike? Feel crampon made it harder on the last 400, do you think it’s necessary?

I would have taken off crampons before that push to the summit.

The parking, had me going, wow talk of advance planning. Mountaineers route is supposed to be hard. No way I'd do this, sketchy!

Nice video! There was a lot more class 3 scrambling than I expected at the end. How long is that part? Looks like you went back down the way you came?
@michaelechsner

Getting on the final 400 was the most difficult but easy the rest of the way moving slowly, it took about 40 minutes to scramble to the top from the notch (elevation was kicking our ass) We did the walk off traverse (still the Mountaineer route) instead of down climbing the final 400. Amazing conditions up there, I know they are getting some snow today.

My pack was probably 12 lb when I hit Whitney doing the John Muir Trail. No mountaineering route though. 20 lb at Muir Trail Ranch is days From Whitney.

Nice video guys. I and my wife also plan to hike Mt. Whitney in the last week of April. Do you know if we need any permission for this term?
@michaelechsner
@michaelechsner Жыл бұрын
You'll need a permit (non-quota). I hiked into the portal and beyond this week and there is about 10-15 feet more snow on the ground than you see in this video, so DO NOT USE this video as an Idea for what the conditions will be like this year. You'll need an Ice axe and crampons.

Sweet vid, thanks. But 42 and 50 lbs. backpacks are way too heavy. With halfway decent gear you can probably halve that.

Yeah, new pack weight is 23lbs without water. Not sure how the hell I managed to pack 50lbs. We also had extra pair of shoes and heavy outer shells that contributed.
