Spent a few days this past March driving, camping, and hiking in the Big Bend Ranch State Park of Texas. Right next door to the Big Bend National Park, the state park is much less crowded with fewer facilities and more remote.
The roads and trails are much more primitive and no lodge or store in the park. In our last video, we let you see what the driving looks like. Where we camped, at the remote Fresno Canyon campsite, the road is definitely 4x4 only.
In this video, we'll take a look at the three hikes we did while we were visiting the park. The first was down to the Crawford - Smith Homestead to take a look at how people lived and survived in the desert over a century ago.
Then we hiked up to the Fresno Canyon Overlook where you get a bird's eye view of the surrounding desert. And finally, we hiked into Mexicano Falls where we found running water in the desert.
I recommend high clearance, short wheelbase 4x4 vehicles. We did make it in with a long bed pickup but it did drag the back bumper a few times. Also, if you are worried about scratches, you might want to stay on the more well-maintained main road. The scrub brush along the primitive roads will leave you with brush scratches.
