This is a day hike to Pike Peak (also known as Pika Point) in an area west of the Yellowstone National Park boundary. Saw a lot of wildlife on this hike. Keep an eye out for grizzly bear in the high grass and sagebrush.

Very cool Stan! Beautiful views and hike! Thanks! We had a great time last week coming through Tetons and Yellowstone! Ended up seeing 2 moose and finally a Grizzly Bear coming back from Lamar heading to Mammoth. He/She was across the river on a turnout where there was a deep gorge, walking the far bank. Not 100% on the identification of grizz or black bear simply because this bear was very unique. Beautiful blonde body but dark brown to almost black head/face. Tons of cars were stopped and most ppl were saying Grizzly. I'm not an expert so I leave that to those who are. But none the less it was amazing. I'm from Mn and we see black bears fairly often. I've seen cinnamon and other shadings but never so blonde with that dark head before. So it was truly an epic view! Tons of Buffalo through Lamar Valley with baby's. I truly love these places. So breathtaking. I literally get sad when I'm driving away. Take care. Craig.

We drove up the Lamar Valley July 2nd and saw so much also! The bear we saw was young - maybe 2 or 3 - very cinnamon, blonde and red - thinking it was a grizzly. The buffalo and little red dogs were so plentiful and beautiful! Saw elk and deer. We then drove over Beartooth and saw a goat, marmot and a pika. Love this part of the country! I was sad to leave also.

your videos are awesome and you are an awesome man. i know it's easiest just to hike alone (and am guilty of that myself too often) but it is a bit worrisome to see you out there with those grizzlies. thank you for sharing the joy.

Well done as always Stan and that is a heck of a "day hike" with those many miles and elevation gain! Most people don't do that many miles in a day, as you typically do, even when they are thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Great videos that you produce. I must admit, you see more grizzly that anyone I know. Of course, you do some deep woods hikes. You ever have any issues. Had a black bear come after me last year that I had to spray. I was 200+ yds away and heading the opposite direction when she spotted me and she had Cubs, but still came after me.

Hi Stan, your videos are so informative and entertaining at the same time. I appreciate you show people, they don't have to be afraid of bears if they would adopt the right behavior. I hope your videos will help to prevent bear killing by people, who don't understand the fact, we all share the the same space and we all need to learn how to respect each other.

Hi Stan, have been watching your amazing videos. I hike this same trail June 2018, while walking thru some tall grass I spoke a bear that ran About 50 ft from me into the trees, as the trail went into the trees found fresh scat and a freshly broken off small pine. Could not identify what type of bear. Thanks

@6:50 I think those marks on the tree were not made by a bear but instead by the Highlander’s sword. Just say’n.

Great stuff. At what distance do you feel a bear is too close?

Great videos and your a beast at those hikes. But I have to know, have you ever had a too close of an encounter with a bear where you had to use bear spray? If so did you happen to get video of it?
@michaelwoehrl17464 жыл бұрын
Stan, great video as always. Whats your strategy with the bears? Do you want them to smell you and take off or do want to sneak up on them and not be detected? Do you use that scent block stuff? Just curious. Thanks
@StanMills4 жыл бұрын
Michael Woehrl, I am out there in peace enjoying Gods beautiful creation which includes the grizzly bear. I am definitely not sneaking up on them and I am not sneaking around at all. I do move quietly and slowly trying to observe everything and appreciating it. I would rather not be detected by any wildlife but that is hard to do. Remember this is their home and be very respectful of it and treat the animals with great respect and they will treat you the same way.

Those are regular hiking boots with gators over the top to keep out debris and make it easier to walk through brush.

I know handguns are not authorized in the park but I would never have the peace of mind with grizzlis around with two cans of bear pepper spray. I don't hike there, but if i did i would def carry and know how to use because i'd rather be sorry for inadequate laws than getting eaten alive by an hungry or wounded bear on its last rope. On the other hand, i understand that not having a handgun forces one to be more aware and respectful of the wildlife which prevents confrontations and surprising the animal. The problem is when people carrying start acting cocky, not respecting safe distances or worse harassing wildlife. Doing that without even being aware of it. There are always too many stupid people. So at the end , I am IN FAVOR of the prohibition of guns in the park, to keep hunters and fools out but with an unspoken leniency for the responsible person who needs a last resort safety. Sorry for this long paragraph, i think the most important thing to say though, is that as long as natural preys (elk, deer) are abundant in the park it's relatively safer. An incomplete and imbalanced ecosystem is the greater danger.
@StanMills4 жыл бұрын
goognam, thank you for your comments. I would just like to say that people's fear of grizzly bear get blown way out of reality. You are in much, much, much more danger of being injured in an auto accident while driving to the trailhead.
@goognamgoognw66374 жыл бұрын
@@StanMillsThanks for your reply Stan, your videos are fantastic. You know the subject, i listen and take note. Maybe it depends on the region and the balance of its ecosystem as well. And your understanding IQ of bear behaviors puts you in a safer zone than say a young adult. That said, it's when thing don't go as planned that safety is important. Some situation can not be anticipated. As for driving, I am a huge adept of defensive driving and avoid busy roads / days.
