In this vlog we bring you along on our first hiking adventure on our Cross Canada Van Life Road Trip. We spent the night in Killarney Provincial Park and woke up bright and early to pack up the van and head out to hike The Crack. We have wanted to do this hike for a long time and were super excited to finally get the chance. The hike starts off fairly easy with just a dirt/gravel trail. But about a kilometer in it starts to climb through lush forest. Next you reach a point where you get to start climbing some small rock scrambles, and then eventually you get to 'The Crack' where you are literally using all fours to climb a giant rock scramble in a crack in the mountain. The views once you get the top are just stunning and totally worth it. Read on for some of the trail details!
1️⃣ The crack is a 7-9km out and back hike. I say 7-9 because online says 7 but our Garmin watches said 9 (we did walk back and forth a little) 😂
2️⃣ The hike is rated as highly difficult. However, the first half of it is relatively easy. The second half is where you start to climb. You'll be faced with some small rock scrambles to start, and they will progressively get bigger.
3️⃣ The crack portion of the hike is really awesome. It's literally a giant rock scramble. Using all four limbs, you will need to climb your way over massive rock fall. This was by far our favourite part of the hike. You will also need to climb this back down, so make sure you are comfortable with that. We got caught in some rain on our way down, and the rocks became VERY slippery. So just be aware of your comfort level and your limits.
4️⃣ The views from the top are just amazing and totally worth the climb. We definitely recommend stopping here to enjoy a snack and some water before you make your way back down.
5️⃣ Overall, the hike took 4 hours to complete including our lunch break at the top.

Yay! We’ve been waiting for your Vlog of Killarney & The Crack! We totally agree with you Tia - one of the BESTT hikes in Ontario! It’s hard to think of one that comes close 😅 You guys had so many more people at the top than when we went in October of last year. We had the top all to ourselves (but probably the best that most people chose to skip it in October because we hiked back down in snow 😂)

You guys were lucky! That’s so cool that you had it to yourself. Hiking that in the snow sounds amazing! Tia will need to be careful though. Her ankle might not be too happy with her after haha

I know everyone hates paying for parking, but keep in mind, the money goes towards helping to maintain the park. It's a beautiful piece of reserved nature for us to enjoy and experience, it's worth every penny of parking fees.

Are there any outhouses on this trail? I know some depending on the length of the trail do have them. That's what I'm most concerned about. Great vlog btw!

Hate to break it to you guys, but 639 meters is too much for Ontario-must have been feet😂. Still the scramble looked really difficult. Great views and safe travels!

Thanks for taking us on this hike. Did you carry bear spray with you?
@TiaandAndy

No. We didn’t carry our bear spray. We saw a lot of people on the trail and felt it was safe enough. However, if we had to hike this during more solitary times, we would have. Good call!!
