The Rings Loop Trail at Mojave National Preserve Hole in the Wall area is a one-mile round trip loop through some unique rock formations. We recommend that you hike the loop clockwise. The hike starts out very easy but becomes more interesting as you enter Banshee Canyon. There you must ascend two sets of iron rings that have been placed in the rock. Banshee Canyon is named for the crying sound that the wind makes as it blows through the Swiss chess-like rock formations. The Rings Loop Trail is rated as moderate by the National Park Service, due to the climb via the rings.
Hole in the Wall was created millions of years ago, when a nearby volcano erupted covering the area with a mixture of gas and ash. The ash cooled and the gas dissipated, leaving behind the porous holes in the wall.
The Mojave National Preserve is in southern California, between interstates 40 and 15. It is a vast untamed area, in the Mojave Desert. Mojave National Preserve was established in 1994 by the California Desert Protection Act and covers 1.6 million acres. No fee or permit is required to hike the Hole in the Wall Rings Loop at the Mojave National Preserve.
