Hiking the Stampede Trail | Into the Wild - Bus 142 | Magic Bus

We set out to hike the Stampede Trail to see the site of the Magic Bus, Bus 142. This is where Chris McCandless unfortuatenly passed away back in the early 1990s. The Alaska National Guard removed the bus last June after numerous deaths and rescues along the Stampede Trail; specifically at the Teklanika River. We also witnessed the wide and swift Teklanika and were unable to cross during our trip. We decided to camp for 2 days next to the Teklanika and take in the sights and sounds of this remote area outside of Denali National Park.

Awesome video. I’ve dreamed about making that hike since I was in college in the early 2000’s. I’ve got a family, and can’t just pickup and go all the way to Alaska, so videos like yours will have to do. Thank you for your video.

I loved this video! The bus has a special place in my heart. I would really love to see how the site looks today, what’s left there etc

Good luck, it’s an amazing hike. You’ll want to keep an eye on the spring breakup and the snowpack. We didn’t encounter too much snow in late May but a few sections of the trail were still iced over.

I can't believe they took the bus. It should have remained there as a shrine until it disintegrated into rust. It should also have stayed there for the sole purpose that in the future someone may need to seek refuge in an emergency.

People have died trying to get to and from the bus thats why they took it out

Well it's a good thing you didn't finish going because the bus is no longer there or haven't you guys heard it's been moved it's not in the wild anymore

We’re well aware of that, I even explained that in the intro of the video about the bus being removed last year. The video title even says “Hiking to the SITE of the bus”

Yet again, the goal was to “hike to the site of the bus”. That goal was cut short because of high water (higher than we were comfortable with)

There have been numerous incidents with people hiking out unprepared requiring rescue. There’s also been a number of fatalities at one of the water crossings (the place where we were unable to cross). The bus will eventually be on display at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks

lmao you didnt't cross?! There are plenty of spots to cross up and down the river if you can't cross in that spot. What a complete waste. Making it to the bus site is the only answer.
