this is probably really really outdated, reply to your question asking if cm 92 mattress was the current mattress, I'm almost positive, Alaska authorities and the McCandless family didn't get rid of it. And filming for the movie wasn't there other than still shots, I can honestly say, it is indeed Chris's death bed.i was about to ask the curator (hiker) how he felt when he woke up, pretty certain he was dead tired and passed out, but did he have dreams of anything pertaining to the story, how was his mood the follow day?

The experienced, savvy, prepared, safety conscious and wise outdoorsman -- here in Alaska especially -- be they a resident or visitor -- never ever makes assumptions about rivers to be crossed.

There is cell reception in a couple spots, but for the most part cell phones do not work for the vast majority of the trail. If you want to call out you could always rent a satellite phone though.

FYI Don't bank on hitching as a form of getting around here. Those days are over. Very few Alaskans pick up hitchhikers these days. Not smart to do it. Unless crime doesn't concern you ... I can cite dozens of cases of abductions and assaults and robberies and vehicle thefts and murders due to picking up a hitcher/ getting a ride. Just last week in fact. Rarely do I see anyone stopping to pick up hitchers ... those who live here know the risks

I started the hike at about 3pm on the first day and made it out by about 2am two days later. So about 35-36 hours total. If I said 2pm that was a mistake.

@@94intyel Yes The Stampede Trail begins as a residential road. I don’t see your point. The bus is now at U of AK Fairbanks. Every summer unprepared individuals needed expensive rescue, which diverted resources from more needed areas. At least 2 people died trying to find that bus. Suggesting that anyone still attempts to reach that area is dangerously misguided and risks lives.

@@capngeo2002 my point is that you can still hike this trail, prepared and well shaped of course... I don't understand why is it a discouragement to hike this trail when the bus is gone? The bus has gone but the trail is there It's more about the trail than about the bus (for me personally) They say - it's no longer in a people's bucket list But if you really into an advanced hiking why should it be off the list? For the "romantics" or for "movie watchers" - yes - off the list But not for an experienced hikers , nature enthusiasts

@@94intyel your point about yourself might be fine if what you say about yourself is true. Pilgrimages to the bus can now be made to the safety of the incredible U of A at Fairbanks Museum. I work in Denali and there are much better trails available than a neighborhood street. Giving other individuals reason to hike a trail that frequently has created rescue and drowning situations is irresponsible.

I think there will still be an individuals hiking this trail for the reason of seeing Alaskan bush and to backpack in the real backcountry... Of course less numbers of them (because the movie fans won't go - no bus there) Removing the bus will shorten the numbers of visitors and a potential circumstances, I agree Ps I am not going there this year And when I'll go it'll be a group of 2 or 3. Hopefully properly prepared

SageAdam I think at the time he hiked there it wasn't the tourist attraction it has since become.... someone who got into trouble today would have a much better chance of being rescued

Ironically it was Chris who made the trail and bus 142 world famous computers and internet were still in their early stages and KZfaq didn't exist yet.

It's not a tourist attraction at all, plus it's not there anymore. It was moved a few days ago.

​@@rockerdax there had been a lot of incidents with people trying to get to it. Two people have died, and lots of others have had to be rescued due to injury and/or getting lost.

@@rockerdax As you can imagine, a lot of people have an opinion on this. A lot of people wanted to do the hike at some point in their life. They were planning this for months by the sounds of it, and ideas such as a bridge over the rivers, etc were discussed, but would have cost way more than moving it. There will be some that still do the hike to the area I reckon.

I too live in Alaska and am an avid adventurer/ outdoorsman. Before I answer, let me first say I'm big on preparedness and conservative risk taking, which includes never attempting to do anything in our unforgiving wildernesses that puts yourself in competition with nature --- such as getting to x destination quickly. Assuming you mean "getting to the bus from the main road", which is the Parks Hwy, which the Stampede Trail intersects, north of Denali National Park, near a town called Healy, which by the way doesn't look much like a trail where it meets the highway, it is actually a road for a short distance. Hence the official metal green road sign bearing the trail's name. Now for the answer: in theory, it may be feasible -- the operative words are "may be" and by "feasible" I am referring to it being "not impossible" but not wise to attempt nor even being possible to do in one day, in some cases. Certainly not realistic in most cases. Best to have no set time to get it done, meaning no deadline for yourself. A deadline can be just that: your death. And you must be extremely well prepared and have luck on your side. It can snow in summertime, especially there, which is not too far north of the Alaska Range mountains including Denali. Weather changes in a heartbeat and can't always be predicted. Many hazards abound especially the river crossings. That's just to get to the bus period. This guy (Erik) demonstrates preparedness and is a necessity. Smart to have an inflatable raft too btw, but you have to be like him and know how to use a raft in Alaskan waters. The only thing in your favor as regards getting to the bus "in one day" is the fact in Alaska in that particular area a summer's day gives you 20 to 21 hours of daylight and in the remaining hours it's still more of a lighted darkness than pitch black darkness, thus truly doable to give the activity a full 24 hours. And in 24 hours, the conditioned and well prepared and highly experienced and outdoor savvy Alaskan outdoorsman/woman -- who does not encounter any setbacks nor hazards be it bear, moose, bad weather, dangerous river conditions, and so on -- just might be able to get from highway to bus in "one day" .... but everything must go your way and with luck on the side. Summer is not here, in that area, by the way, until mid-June, not any earlier, and some years, not until late-June. And early August it's autumn. So, the window for attempting it is very short. Since this video was uploaded, more than 10 people have died trying to get to this bus. Most perish trying to cross one of the rivers. Even when the river is low, an inexperienced person not accustomed to our rivers and how to navigate them on foot, can quickly be swept away.

I did the hike this time in a hair under 36 hours (out and back.) That said, I would not recommend it, nor do it that quickly again. I was very exhausted by the time I got back out of the woods and in general I try to avoid that state when spending time in the backcountry as it's not really safe. As an example, when I got out I had to wait a few hours for a ride and being that exhausted and having not taken the time to eat enough on the trail, I found it hard to stay warm and spent quite a bit of time shivering while I waited for a ride. Two full days would be a good 'fast' time for fit hikers with plenty of experience. Four days is a nice relaxed pace. I know of people who have done the whole trip in 24 hours but I know of many more who have attempted it and gotten themselves into trouble when they didn't pack a tent or other overnight supplies. Hope that answer helps.

@@abouteverything2654 That's a possibility, but the chances of it happening to you are very low. One or two people a year seem to get mauled in AK each year on average. Usually they are doing something pretty egregious like getting too close to cubs, or trying to feed the bears. Rarely, someone does just get attacked completely unprovoked, but not usually. It's not going to keep me out of the woods anyway.

You are one of many who think this way. You are also likely not an Alaskan nor an adventurer or hunter, hiker, etc. Before this nutjob found his way to the bus -- and died due to assuming Alaska's wilderness was like his backyard as a kid and not without risks for the ill prepared, such as himself, and lost his life as a result -- the bus was and still is and will continue to be a shelter for the person who comes upon it, when they are starving and exhausted, and in need of a place to sit, relax, have a hot meal, and otherwise chill out, without much fear of being exposed to the elements, the cold, the rain, the snow, the high winds, the bears, and so on. I live here and can attest the bus is more than just some place where some foolish, misguided/ self-delusional person died a lonely, preventable death. Think about your thinking ... you drive roads where others have died and that's not creepy enough to keep you distanced and unwilling to be on those roads, right?

Main purpose is not to sleep on the bed where someone died from starvation. its not even purpose at all. i assume you can feel alot of energy in this bus. many people have been there , left their signs and items. it's just a cozy place after a long walk and also kind of magical due to his history and energy. Protection from the weather and bears, wolf packs, etc. Bears are known to get into tents and vehicles too for that matter. If any scent is detected a bear will investigate looking for food. It doesn't have to be food to attract a bear. Deodorant, toothpaste, etc. All attracts bears. And grizzlies are always hunting for food and are in that area in large numbers. The bus is shelter and offers some security, and stress free sleep. You'd have to be present, such as being an adventurer or hunter or hiker, who is there, and exhausted, starving, and in need of a place to sit and relax, and have themselves a hot meal, to understand perhaps
