In this video we hike the White to Dark Way in the Peak District. It is a 27 mile trail and we split it into two days with a wonderful wild camp in the moors. I have compiled the route in OS maps for you below if you want to take on this wonderful walk yourself!
The walk was designed for the May 2012 edition of Country Walking Magazine to celebrate their 25th anniversary. “We wanted this to be an adventure through the landscapes that make the Peak District unique: limestone dales and wildflower meadows, frothing woodlands and heather moors, vast reservoirs and tiny streams, gritstone edges and rocky hilltops.”
It is the first walking trail to link together the White Peak and the Dark Peak and is typically hiked over three days. It starts in Bakewell and ends in Hope, roughly south to north.

There are a lot of lovely villages here for sure! It makes the UK so interesting as every village is so quaint and different in it's own way. There are of course big cities and towns but I am certainly a country girl at heart 💚 Glad you enjoyed the video Brian and I really do appreciate all your support here and on Patreon 😊

My heart rejoiced when I saw the video was almost 38 minutes long. Stunningly beautiful countryside peppered with the sweet animals along the way. I was definitely transported to another time when you went through the villages with centuries old buildings and especially the one with Little John’s grave ❤️ you can’t get much better than that although when your both hands touched the stone I was overwhelmed with a sense of peace and comfort. Thank you both for covering this area so we could share it with you. 🙏🏻🥰💚

So glad you didn't mind the length Anita! I was worried it was too long and even considered splitting it into 2 sections - it was a hard job getting it reduced from over 90mins which is what it was on initially after the first cut 😳 I always find everything so beautiful and interesting and it's hard choosing the 'best' bits. I hope you are keeping well and so lovely to read your wonderful comments as always 🙏🏻💚

Wild garlic! I always thought of garlic as a bulb but you ate the leaves. And that was a great story about the citizens of Eyam. We could learn a lesson today from their heroic actions considering the current pandemic. Thanks for sharing.

Yes you can eat the leaves and even the flowers! The leaves are a little bitter but lovely finely chopped and added to salad or cooked with spinach - delicious 😋 Yes the villagers story is certainly relevant and more appreciated than before!

Even the sheep go from White to Dark (Peak) at 23:21. Very clever sheep, that way they can cross back and forth without a passport. That was a very nice "stealthy" camp spot. Glad you and Derek are allowed out, things are starting to open up again here in California. Doing some sections of PCT in August and September. I'll have to go back and check your PCT videos on those sections to see what you were up to there. Happy Trails!

I walked in a lot of areas in the North of the UK, you only get those drywall squeezes in the the North East of England, the old Danelaw area, maybe they were introduced by the Saxons. I know they are a right pain with a heavy rucksack and a large dog. Step 1 - Approach the squeeze, take off rucksack and lift it over the wall and place on the other side of the wall Step 2 - Lift a 50kg Dog high enough that he can get through. Step 3 - Step through the Squeeze. Step 4 - Put on Rucksack Step 5 - Walk 100 meters Rinse and repeat.

Hi Mary, I just wanted to say hello and to say how much I’ve enjoyed watching your videos! 👍 I only came across your channel a couple of weeks ago, but I’ve now watched all of your Peak District films and have loved every one! 😊 The first one I watched was where you and Derek walked to Crowden and Millstone Rocks, and I did in particular enjoy your walk along the Longdendale Trail to Woodhead Tunnel - I thought that was fab especially as I’ve never seen the tunnel before. You have a very cheerful and bubbly personality which is really uplifting when watching you on your walks. Well done and keep up the great work! 😊 All the best. Cheers, Patrick 👍

A very nice video and hike. I had to chuckle when you mentioned the Dam Busters. I'd bet that most people don't know who they were. 20 years ago a recent college graduate thought that my war(NAM) was part of WWII(my Dad's war). My son finds it amazing how much I have seen change since I was born in the 1950s. My grandfathers were born in the 1890s and saw even more. Thanks for taking us along. Good Luck, Rick

Challenging gates/stiles indeed. The people of Eyam set an example many of us could follow today. The moors were delightful. Most of the livestock seemed to be be accustomed to people wandering by. What fun!
@MarysOutdoorAdventures

They certainly were - if I had recorded them earlier I could have got a good 5 mins more footage 🤣 Yes it was I was thinking too about the villagers, how relevant that story during these times. I was out hiking yesterday in a more remote area and the wildlife were very cautious and kept a great distance, it is so noticeable which ones are familiar with walkers and which aren't.

Another beautiful hike through a storybook landscape! That looked to be no cakewalk in terms of the terrain and steep inclines (and no switchbacks). Good to see the team in action and enjoying spring again. I noticed that some of the cows were lying down -- which is supposedly a sign that rain is coming (at least, that's what I was told as a kid). So I was looking to see if, in fact, the rain came later that day (it didn't). I'm not sure if it counts when the rain doesn't come until the next day. Maybe the cows can sense a drop in barometric pressure (?), or maybe it's an old "wives' tail with nothing to it. Anyway, thanks for another wonderful trip to England!
@MarysOutdoorAdventures
@MarysOutdoorAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
It was beautiful John, such a great feeling of being free and away from the busy trails. I have heard that about the cows too. I do know that they lie down to regulate body temperature so to cool down or warm up depending on the conditions so maybe they were too warm as it was one of the first warm days we have had for a while!
