Thank you for taking us along on another wonderful if challenging camp. Something I thought I would share in case of any interest is a low bulk option I’ve used many times over the years in cold conditions. If you can get hold of a cotton sniper veil you can fold it in half and wrap around your middle two or three times. If folded it gives four or more layers of the veil much like wearing multiple string vests. You can then layer sleep clothes over the top. I’ve found it really helps to keep the lower back & kidneys that bit warmer in harsh conditions when under wool & canvas. Finally, as mentioned already, some very sobering reflections on the poor souls experiencing such terrible conditions currently. Thanks & take care Giles

PEOPLE OUT IN THE COLD: I join with you in giving thought to those who are 'out in the cold' through no wish of their own. One difference between us, on the one hand, and them on the other is that we didn't have our shelters come down on our heads with great force in the early hours. Another difference is that WE have the equipment and have thought about how basic living could be done. I ALWAYS view our camping life from the perspective of how it does not work for concentrations of people over ANY period of time.

👍👍👍 Good Morning Giles .. Another good one from you. To repeat myself .. again 🙄😏 .. Aye, the Beauty of Simplicity 😊.That high vantage point being a wee bit out of the way and overlooked. Perhaps a good thing and a gem for those who take the trouble to get there .. less chance of being spoiled. The bannock bread .. ('and now for something different' .. aka 'useless information' 🙄). The Australian 'Swagmen / Sundowners' called them 'Twisters'. I recall reading, back in the 70's, an article about a Swagman settling down for the night under a tree in the Outback. His supper consisted of, inter alia, of a 'twister' baked over a small fire. The dough was rolled into a thin 'snake' and then 'twisted' around a suitable stick, leaving a small gap between each loop. This increases the surface area of dough exposed to the fire and subsequently quicker cooking. I've tried this method and it does what it's supposed to. Perhaps Giles, worth a go sometime? Even more useless info 😴 .. I'll be visiting my Son and Family in the UK .. Lincoln / Birchwood coming March. Will be seeing my first and only Grandchild 💕 for the first time. She recently turned two. Previous attempts to visit were scuppered by Covid .. restrictions and actual illness on their side 😣. Hopefully 🤞🙏 this time, all will go well. They live near a small wood and I'm hoping at the very least to be able to rustle up something on the Bushbox LF Wood Burner therein and thus 'leave my mark' .. presence only that is .. no trace, obviously 😁. Also .. during my time in the UK, the 'Swiss Grannies' will be spared my shenanigans and associated predations 😁. Winter overnighting .. wool blanket or not. The choice between the additional bulk and weight to carry vs the comfort that it can perhaps afford. Thanks Giles, for taking us along with you .. always a pleasure being a passenger sitting in the 'Peanut Gallery' 😊. Until next time then, take care .. Tommy

Thank you very much Tommy. Always appreciate you watching the vids and that is another wonderful and also interesting comment. I have read about the bannock being spiralled around a green stick over the fire. It never really occurred to me why but I will have to give it a try 👍 It must be very exciting to visit your little granddaughter. I bet you can’t wait. I hope you have managed to avail of modern communication technology - in this way I hope she will already be very familiar and not too shy etc. And when it comes to spending quality time with her you will hit the ground running and get straight into having fun and adventures ❤️😊 Great idea to get the bush box out in the woods- perhaps the family will come along and make a bit of a day of it ? Good to see you again, Giles. I always look forward to your videos. Interesting little pine bough shelter you ran across while hiking. Might be an interesting place to stay, maybe improve on a little. One thing I know would help you stay warm, is a few inches of leaves our pine boughs under the tarp you lay on. It would help your sheep skin insulate your body from the cold ground. I found your thoughts about people in war zones, in natural disasters and just homeless having no choice about being in the cold. About not being prepared for it, interesting. When we choose to be out in the cold and are prepared for it. There’s a big difference. You are a caring fellow, mate. Love your videos! Keep up the good work. Thank you kindly Steven - appreciate your kind words and support for the videos. Yeah, that was a nice little bushcraft shelter amongst the conifer plantations. You’re right about leaves or, ideally, pine boughs under the ground sheet bed area. At the moment I seem to get by with the sheepskin reasonably okay. This means I don’t have to gather large amounts of debris/leaves which just helps a bit with keeping my impact down to very little. Yeah, on a cold night but with a warm fire you get to wondering how others are getting on who have been forced out into the cold night. Take care my friend and thx as always 🇺🇸🇬🇧😊👍

I guess any hill seems high if it tops the hills around it, even on the downs. Agree with thoughts about those forced to be out in the cold without choice. We offered Forest School sessions for the children of local Ukrainian refugees and received a reality check: their families were very glad to be safely housed and did not want their children 'going backwards' to campfires in the outdoors! We are lucky to be comfortable enough to want to seek adventure.

Dear Giles, thanks for sharing your video. I am always surprised about how eager you are to spare plastic and synthetic fabrics. Your plash palatka seems to be a small shelter. Have you ever think about to use a Nessmuk Oelskin Tarp. It's quit a good alternative. I wonder that you stand the cold without even using a wool blanket. And you are absolutely right that nowadays a lot of people are forced to be in the cold because of reasons without a choice. We should be thankful to have the choice to go to places close to nature and doing an overnighter or to watch videos about friends doing it! Best regards

But because I am only 5’6” I find a can get by with a Plash Palatka/Zeltbahn 👍 But I’m always thinking of possible ways to improve kit (without adding too much weight or bulk !!!) Thanks again for following the videos. Cheers 😊👍

Hello again, Giles, I hope you are well and doing ok. I started my early Sunday shift at six, like last time, and was overjoyed to see in my notifications that you'd posted a new video. As always, it's really great to see you out and about in nature and the elements for another peaceful and relaxing episode (for us, at least, and I hope for you too, despite the cold night!). That was quite an interesting looking boulder there at 3:19, it looked a bit out-of-place, as though it had been thrown there by some bored giant. Some lovely old trees on your way up, and a really nice view all round from the top. Good that you got another trig-point to stand on. When we're out with the children on walks and we come across them, we always have to take it in turns for a go. Everyone always wants to be the first up! :) I thought someone had beaten you to it there when you got to the woods and found that nice little shelter. You weren't tempted? :D Thanks for reminding us that you choose to be out there in the cold, it helps to allay the slight feelings of guilt that can come over us when watching you out there in the cold, from such a warm vantage point here at home! Seriously though, nice one Giles, for considering those around the world that might be stranded out in the cold through no choice of their own. Some of them probably don't even have the most basic of equipment such as that you have here: means for shelter, food, clean water and a source of warmth. It's hard to imagine trying to cope with such conditions unprepared, and easy to forget about those with much harder struggles for survival than our own. Well done for making it through another cold night with the bare minimum of comforts and conveniences! And thanks for sharig it with us. Take care, Giles, and already I'm looking forward to the next time. 🌳🔥🍲⛺🌿

Hi Giles. Hope your well. Another great vid and so inspiring. I ‘pinched’ your wax firefighter idea, but I used 1” lengths of old cut up T shirt, and rubbed vasaline into them, then rolled them up into coils. Places about 10 into a old Altoid tin, so easy to pack away. When lighting a fire, I just unroll one and place under the kindling. Works like a charm, even when windy. I've been watching your videos from Western Canada for quite a while now and one things stands out to me that I just have to ask: why are so many of your camps set up in what for us would be "scrub", off the trail and away from any clearings or views? Are you "stealth" camping? Here, I prefer more open territory on the edges of clearings with more open sight lines, mainly for a sense of security in terms of having a better chance of seeing "visitors" - bears, wolves and cougars are all in our area and roam around at all hours. Such wildlife may not be a concern for you in Southern England so I wonder if you're just trying to avoid human contact, which is another reason I like to get out in the woods! Anyway, every one of your videos is really enjoyable. Who knows, maybe you'll convert me to vegetarian sausages!

Look at recent news articles about camping on Dartmoor. Then you'll have a better idea of what it's like camping in England and Wales. The situation is different in Scotland. As to wild animals, in the UK there are no large predators and the smaller ones stay away from humans. Domestic animals could be a problem if you're daft enough to camp in the same field.
